Modern Classics Burmese Days
Modern Classics Burmese Days | George Orwell
Based on his experiences as a policeman in Burma, George Orwell's first novel presents a devastating picture of British colonial rule. It describes corruption and imperial bigotry in a society where, 'after all, natives were natives - interesting, no doubt, but finally ... an inferior people'. When Flory, a white timber merchant, befriends Indian Dr Veraswami, he defies this orthodoxy. The doctor is in danger: U Po Kyin, a corrupt magistrate, is plotting his downfall. The only thing that can save him is membership of the all-white Club, and Flory can help. Flory's life is changed further by the arrival of beautiful Elizabeth Lackersteen from Paris, who offers an escape from loneliness and the 'lie' of colonial life. George Orwell's first novel, inspired by his experiences in the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, Burmese Days includes a new introduction by Emma Larkin in Penguin Modern Classics.

Set in Burma in the 1920‘s this describes British imperialism and racism in that time. A group of white men who are members of a club that really has no purpose other than drinking decide who can and can‘t join. The characters are vile but Orwell manages to inject some humour into his writing making this more of an enjoyable read than I thought

#ReadingAsia2021 was fun challenge, a lot of so-so books, but interesting countries to explore through literature. The biggest positive surprised for me was Orwell‘s Burmese Days, and my two favourite books from this challenge: family saga The Eight Life by N. Haratischvili, and light cozy mystery Aunty Lee‘s Chilled Revenge by Ovidia Yu. My book for Tibet was Child of Tibet by Soname Yangchen, but unfortunately, the country isn‘t on the map.

Librarybelle Congratulations! Amazing job! Thanks for joining us this year! 3y
BarbaraBB You‘re this years first to accomplish the challenge, congratulations! I screenshot your choices and hope you‘ll join us for #ReadingAfrica2022 as well! 3y

The story is set in #Myanmar and fantastically outlines imperialism, racism and colonialist thinking. The characters are very diverse in their desires (some are too comical for my taste) but they all share their superior beliefs. My only major complaint is rushed ending.
I don‘t know why, but I had a lot of resistance toward this book. My attitude, when I started with reading, was - let‘s get over with it, but to my surprise I really liked it.

Librarybelle Woohoo! 4y
Suet624 Let‘s get this over with. I feel ya. 4y
BarbaraBB One I need to read too. 4y

This is Pride & Prejudice gone bad- but most definitely not a bad book. Definitely some prep for 1984, a love affair always going wrong, wrapped up in oppression, repression and entitled racism; and that‘s not even the half of it.

Story focuses on a group of British imperialists in Burma in the 1920s. An astonishing cavalcade of despicable characters, each more vile and loathsome than the last. Orwell spent five years in Burma in the military police, and this was the first novel he wrote. You can feel him seething with indignation as he writes, and you seethe along with him. Savagely well written.

#Myanmar #burma #readaroundtheworld Finally finished the first novel by Orwell which already shows his hatred for imperialism and racism. It is full of clear, precise descriptions of Burma in the days of the British Raj and is populated by loathsome characters of every ethnicity, although the British top the pile. One is only mildly hoping for the least loathsome of the colonial white degenerates to triumph. I continue to read more about Burma.

BarbaraBB Beautiful picture! 7y
