The Library: A World History | James W. P. Campbell
10 posts | 3 read | 18 to read
A library is not just a collection of books, but also the buildings that house them. From the great dome of the Library of Congress, to the white facade of the Seinjoki Library in Finland, the architecture of a library is a symbol of its time as well as of its builders' wealth, culture, and learning.

Pickpick

The Library: is one of the first books to tell the story of library architecture around the world and through time in a single volume, from ancient Mesopotamia to modern China and from the beginnings of writing to the present day. As these beautiful and striking photos reveal, each age and culture has reinvented the library, molding it to reflect their priorities and preoccupations—and in turn mirroring the history of civilization itself.

1. Nope. I read anywhere & everywhere
2. Bookmark or, if necessary, whatever is handy
3. Always stop after a chapter
4. Sure do—usually tea or coffee with a treat
5. Music & will read in front of tv while others are watching (I can usually tune it out)
6. Depends. One book if it‘s really good but I will sometimes read from to 3-5
7. Most anywhere
8. Silently
9. Yes, I‘ll manipulate page order on occasion 😉
10. New
11. Never

LeahBergen Patrick O'Brian! ❤❤ 8y
CrowCAH @LeahBergen I agree! I ❤️ his Aubry/Maturin series; great sea faring research for me! ☠ 8y
SaraFair Is that Sea Wolf up there? I have from my Dad but have not read. 8y
CrowCAH @SaraFair yes it is! And I'm actually reading an ecopy currently; it's good, focuses on what it means to live. I just got to a little romance part, so it will be interesting to see what happens. 8y

So my birthday gift from my partner was new bookshelves to put in my budding library. He put them together and I put some books in them. These are just the ones on my dresser and what I bought today. We're gonna need a bigger boat...

Gina Now he is a keeper! Love it 8y
melrailey Oh but the joy of new bookshelves. 8y
Joybishoptx @Gina oh he is! He's the best. He wanted to order some from Amazon but I was like "I want them NOW!" Haha. He indulges me. 8y

Joybishoptx @melrailey it's almost as good as new books 8y
mauveandrosysky I feel you. They fill up way too quickly. 8y
Reviewsbylola Great gift!! 8y
vivastory Love the Poetry Speaks set 8y
Gina @Joybishoptx I moved in with my long time boy toy and he let me set up 4 bookcases plus he helped me drag an old cool looking one in from the curb. He is my dream guy! 8y
SharonGoforth Looking good! 8y
bookandcat I want more bookshelves and I like the way these look 😍 8y
bookandcat Also if you stack sideways going vertically you might fit more (or stack some that way on top of the existing stacks)...Some people hate stacking it that way but if you don't mind it fits so much more. Spoken like a true book hoarder LOL 8y
Joybishoptx @mauveandrosysky right? I love the infinity of more books 8y
Joybishoptx @vivastory I have been with that beauty my entire teaching career. I adore it. 8y
Joybishoptx @Gina They're the best when they support our book obsessions. 😜 8y
Joybishoptx @bookandcat We did the book shopping last and I was almost out of spoons. I was worried I wouldn't be able to make a choice. We looked at these and were sold! And thankfully they had them in stock! I was thinking about going vertically. Great minds! 8y
bookandcat @Joybishoptx it will be like a game of book Tetris! My favorite! 8y
Joybishoptx @bookandcat haha! Yes! That's the plan for tomorrow. 8y
Desha @Joybishoptx love your new shelves! ❤️ I always say #nevertoomanybooksnotenoughbookshelves ☺️ I'm sorry to hear that you deal with spoons too...I have a serious lung disease so I totally get it...I used to be a high school teacher. But I definitely love #allthebooks and my two #dogsoflitsy always keep me company! ❤️🐾🐾❤️📚📚📚📚 8y
Joybishoptx @Desha I was wondering if anyone would get my spoons thing. Did you teach English? I teach seniors. It's a challenge but I'm glad I can still work. 8y
MyNamesParadise Very nice!!! Happy Birthday!!! 8y
Joybishoptx @MyNamesParadise thank you! 💕💕 8y
Desha @Joybishoptx Yes I taught English and History and absolutely loved my job! I'm really sad that I can't work anymore 😥😥 So glad you can! Our teenagers need great teachers! ☺️👍🏻😍❤️📚 (edited) 8y
Desha @Joybishoptx and yes TOTALLY get spoons lol...do you follow Chronic Babes blog or get emails from "The Mighty? Both are really encouraging to me ❤️ (edited) 8y
Joybishoptx @Desha My son is the history buff. I'm sorry you had to stop teaching too. You're right. They need good teachers who want to be there. 💕💕 8y
Joybishoptx @Desha No but sounds like I should! 8y
Desha Most definitely!! I always said teenagers have the hearts (vulnerable) of children in the bodies of adults...it's such a challenging time! ☺️ 8y
Joybishoptx @Desha So true! I always knew I wanted to work with teens. It truly is a calling 8y
Desha Yes! The Mighty is an online blog where many different people with various illnesses but mostly long-term/chronic illnesses...they share tips they've learned, anger they've felt at the same issues I've been angry at etc...they just "get" chronic illness. You can sign up to receive email on their blog page. I always end up reading several articles lol. And chronic babe is this super fun, supportive woman who deals with her own illnesses and has "AW (edited) 8y
Joybishoptx @Desha I will check that out. Thank you. 8y
Desha AP Wednesdays where she sends out encouraging emails every Wednesday (AWAP means as well as possible). She's all about living life to its fullest no matter what illness we're dealing with! ☺️❤️ (edited) 8y
Desha Awesome! I am all about the let's support one another when dealing with spoons lol 😍😜☺️❤️ 8y
Joybishoptx @Desha Thank you so much! This month has been especially challenging. Our weather has been so spastic and that always makes things worse for me. I will check these out for sure!!! 8y
Desha Oh no! 😥 Hang in there! I know for me personally I don't do well in cold air because it irritates my lungs. I guess it's a good thing I'm a native of San Diego 😜☺️ As much as I would love to live somewhere with four distinct seasons I just can't. Sending healing thoughts your way! ❤️❤️❤️ 8y
Joybishoptx @Desha Thank you so much. I love San Diego. I went to Comic Con four times. Love that city. I always stayed one extra day and just hung out. So beautiful. 8y
Desha Awesome! Yes Comic Con is so big now! I remember when it started! Yes I feel very lucky to live in such a beautiful city 😜. If you're ever here for CC again, we could meet up somewhere, maybe by the beach/water lol ☺️☺️❤️😍 8y
Joybishoptx @Desha Absolutely! I don't know about Comic Con. I may not be able to do that again. But I would love to take my kids to California. 😀 8y
Desha Yes!! Would love that! There are so many things to do here! And if you don't know already, I know of two great indie bookstores in La Jolla and in Coronado! ❤️❤️❤️ 8y
Joybishoptx @Desha Awesome! I think we are for sure going to do California this summer 8y
Desha Yay!!! Let's plan something when you guys know when/where you're going!! 😍😍😍❤️ 8y
Joybishoptx @Desha Definitely! 8y
