A family torn apart by one night, one incident, one choice to stand up and do the right thing and we see it all through the eyes of the youngest daughter. This book deals with racism and police brutality, but I feel the author does an amazing job of making it very accessible to younger readers.

This is one of my favorites by her. 💚

Glad I decided to give this a re-read. I first read it when I was 12 and it has stuck with me all these years.
I'm kind of a sucker for those coming-of-age type stories, or stories of young people figuring out who they are when something big happens to them.
And I love Jacqueline Woodson. I'm looking forward to her next middle grade book

Woodson does it again. Interesting story. Beautiful writing.

Another incredibly well done book by Woodson. A young Black girl and her family move from their home under the witness protection program after her father agrees to testify against his fellow police officers after a young unarmed Black child is killed. This book talks extensively about identity, change, race, serving as an officer and family! Really well done.

Casually reading this while my mom is here. This is the second Woodson novel for young children I‘ve found recently and I couldn‘t resist grabbing it!

This one has been on my classroom shelf for a while, so I finally decided to dive in. The story is moving and makes you appreciate what you have and aware that things can change. I think my middle grade students will find this engaging.
