Streets of Laredo | Larry McMurtry
20 posts | 29 read | 5 to read
From the Pulitzer Prize winning author Larry McMurtry comes the sequel and final book in the Lonesome Dove tetralogy. An exhilarating tale of legend and heroism, "Streets of Laredo" is classic Texas and Western literature at its finest. Captain Woodrow Call, August McCrae's old partner, is now a bounty hunter hired to track down a brutal young Mexican bandit. Riding with Call are an Eastern city slicker, a witless deputy, and one of the last members of the Hat Creek outfit, Pea Eye Parker, now married to Lorena once Gus McCrae's sweetheart. This long chase leads them across the last wild streches of the West into a hellhole known as Crow Town and, finally, into the vast, relentless plains of the Texas frontier."

Sequel to Lonesome Dove…fantastic. It comes in under Lonesome Dove, but I would say this is a must read if you loved LD. As soon as I can get to the library, I‘m getting the first prequel, Dead Man‘s Walk. #Texas #Mexico #BigBookSummerChallenge. McMurtry does women well and they are given the credit they deserve. Love his characters, love his story telling. This book was hugged, just not quite as much, but it‘s worthy.

madamereadsalot1 I borrowed Lonesome Dove and Comanche Moon this summer from the library, and loved every second of them. So I bought the ebooks of the other two for my birthday but haven't started them yet. I am determined to complete them for 2019 though! 5y

Received a Kindle gift card for my birthday and spent almost all of it today on these 4 titles. Most excited about finishing the Lonesome Dove series, and hoping Kindred redeems my opinion of Butler after the horrible taste Fledgling left in my mouth.

Ms.Story I loved 5y
madamereadsalot1 @Ms.Story I was told by a friend that I must give it a try before completely swearing her off. Fledgling disturbed me deeply and it was nearly impossible to get through, but I've heard Kindred is nothing like it. That not only is it wonderful, but it's powerful. So I look forward to trying it and having my judgment changed. :) 5y

I have never really been a fan of action-packed #kisskissbangbang type novels, so I was surprised to fall in love with Lonesome Dove. Since finishing #lonedove I have been excited to read the rest of the series but am unsure which book to read next 🤔 There seem to be differing opinions on whether to continue in the order the books were published vs following the chronological life of the characters. Any thoughts on this??
#tuneintonovember

Tamra I‘ve read them and I don‘t recall it mattering. 7y
Suet624 Haven‘t read any of the others but now I want to! 7y
Reviewsbylola Very interesting. I planned on reading the rest in order. 7y

JanuarieTimewalker13 The only LM book, I've ever read was The Loop Group. Don't remember what I thought of it...read it years back 7y
emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola which order!? 7y
Reviewsbylola They are numbered books. My spines are numbered 1-4 so I was going to go with that. 7y
LeahBergen I read Lonesome Dove first and then read the others in order of publication (Laredo, Dead, Comanche). Hmm... I think you‘d probably have more fun reading them chronologically (Dead, Comanche, Laredo). I always recommend starting with Lonesome Dove, though, which so SO goes against my anal-retentive need to always read a series in order. 😆 7y
Reviewsbylola Yes, chronologically is how they are numbered so I just figured I‘d go with that! I‘m glad I read LD first though since that‘s the one most loved and most well known. @LeahBergen 7y
Daisey I'll be curious to follow this conversation because I'm going to need to read some more of this series as well. 7y
Bookzombie I read Lonesome Dove first and then Streets of Laredo. I‘m going to read the first 2 next year and reread the last 2 on audio as I hear it‘s very good. I like to read series in order but honestly these can go either way. I have seen all of the movies and you can watch them in any order too. 7y

@Marmie7 tagged me in the #bookcolortag for tan books. I really think that Streets of Laredo is the only true tan book I have, but I threw a couple of possibilities in there.

I'm not sure who hasn't been tagged so if you want to do one, feel free. 🙂 My color choice for you is maroon.

I'm picking Clara and Lorena from the Lonesome Dove series. Larry McMurtry is not easy on his characters, man or woman. Both of these ladies go through harrowing things throughout Lonesome Dove and Streets of Laredo, especially Lorena. They are brave and strong women. #girlcrush #octphotochallenge Photo credit: Google

jetspins24 For a second I did a double take - this was Diane Lane, right? Because this picture looks exactly like Kate Hudson who would have been way too young to be in that movie....crazy, I had never thought of those two looking alike before. 8y
LibrarianRyan @jetspins24 your right. It does look like Kate Hudson. 8y
Bookzombie @jetspins24 @LibrarianRyan I hadn't notice that either. I think it may be the angle. This is a young and very blonde Diane Lane. 8y

I finished up Streets of Laredo this evening. Not as good as Lonesome Dove, but still a good read and now I have closure for some of my lingering questions I had after reading Lonesome Dove.

I jut read LONESOME DOVE a few months ago and absolutely loved it! I had no idea that there was a sequel, so imagine my surprise when I found this on the sale shelves at work! I'm so excited to visit with the Hat Creek Outfit again.

Bookzombie I love Lonsome Dove and Streets of Laredo. There are actually 4 books in the series. The other two are Comanche Moon and Dead Man's Walk. They are on my TBR list. 🤓 9y
SGJ So, so good. 9y
JessReads @Bookzombie Yeah, they're on my TBR, too! I decided to read this to finish up this part of the story, then go back and read the prequels. 😊 9y
Seonjoon You should *really* watch the miniseries for Lonesome Dove too. One of my fav book/adaptation pairs ever. 8y
JessReads @Seonjoon I'll have to check it out! I can see why Lonesome Dove would make a good miniseries. 8y
