#doublespin for September done.. this was… ok. I didn‘t feel like the story being narrated from the POV of a dog really added anything, and it was pretty bloody bleak. Not Haig‘s strongest.

This was recommended to me by a friend as a dog lover/owner but I couldn‘t get on with it and it‘s doesn‘t look like Jackapoo Holly liked it much either!! The sweet narration exposes a series of horrible events and I found the contrast really jarring. I also just couldn‘t relate to any of the characters. So what‘s next from the massive ‘to read‘ pile...?

I usually love a book from an animal's perspective so I was excited to read this as it's from the dog's POV. But that's about the only thing going for the novel without that, it's a barely mediocre story about a dysfunctional family and marriage. Worst of all the author has chosen to have the dog feel that all of the family happiness and success is his responsibility. So I had to read the last chapter and terrible, just terrible.

I‘m not doing 24 in 48, but I am inspired to use a timer when I read this weekend because I‘ve never done it before and I‘m curious. It‘s not likely to go well if Zeus doesn‘t leave me alone though.

This is my 5th book I‘ve read by Matt Haig. He has quickly b come a favorite author of mine. He knows how to blend reality with the mystical/supernatural in a way that seems completely normal.

I‘m sorry for the language but I had to share this ridiculousness spouted off by Lear the Rottweiler in this awesome book. It was just too much! Ghost of Lassie 👻! You should have seen his initial entrance! There were more F bombs than regular words! 🙊😅 I guess we all can‘t be Labradors! 😇 🤷‍♀️😂

tracey38 😂😂😂 that's really funny! 6y

An entertaining if sad story told from the point of view of a pet Labrador which gives me an excuse to share a photo of our long departed Lab.

Novel from the perspective of a labrador with a high-stress, high-pressure career. Far from Matt Haig‘s strongest work, and I think it might have worked better as a short story, but I still enjoyed his inventiveness, dark themes, and use of metaphors. Won‘t knock your socks off, but pretty good and definitely entertaining! ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

I‘ve been so close to finishing this for like 3 days, and now I actually CAN finish it as I‘m home from work with the flu or something horrible that just appeared out of nowhere last night. However, I‘m panicking because I‘m worried I unknowingly gave this virus thing to my newborn nephew when I met him on Sunday and now he‘s probably going to be sick in a few days and then he‘ll get pneumonia and die and it will be all my fault.

julesG Let's hope for the best. Speedy recovery to you 7y
Kaye Sorry you‘re sick. Just contact the baby‘s mom and tell her you are ill so she will keep an eye peeled on the babe. If he even starts getting signs of fever, etc she can take him straight to the Dr. (edited) 7y
DivineDiana Keep calm. All will be well. 💗 7y

“For the first time, Adam looked down at the mess on the carpet. But even as he looked, he didn‘t really seem to notice, as if there was always a pile of dogshit in the middle of the floor. As if it was meant to be there. No. As if he LIKED it being there. As if he too wanted to pull his trousers down and defecate all over the house.”

Ok, apparently I lied and ended up committing to a book after all. This is the last Matt Haig book that the library has that I haven‘t read, so I might have to actually try out other authors soon. Lame! I‘m on page 89 and it‘s turning out to be such a light read, that it‘s kind of exactly what I need right now. It‘s about a dog. Yup.

This was a great book! Told from the perspective of the family dog, you see the family from a whole different view. Here is one of my protectors 💙

Well-written, but do be careful with this one. It's unflinching in its resolution - I think all I need to say (not really a spoiler) is that this book begins just before the labrador main character is due to be put down.

So, I was looking up Matt Haig at the bookstore today - he has a book releasing in the States in October that's going to be a movie. Anyway, I wanted to see what we had in and found we've had this interesting little gem on our shelves since 2009. I picked it up out of curiosity and so far I'd have to say it's an addictive, clever read, and altogether unfussy. I'm intrigued.
