What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
What Could Possibly Go Wrong? | Jodi Taylor
32 posts | 34 read | 18 to read
Max is back! New husband, new job, and a training regime that cannot fail to go wrong! Take one interim Chief Training Officer, add five recruits, mix with Joan of Arc, a baby mammoth, a duplicitous Father of History, a bombed rat, Stone Age hunters, a couple of passing policemen who should have better things to do, and Dick the Turd. Stir well, bring to the boil and wait for the bang! Join Max in the sixth instalment in the off-the-wall Chronicles of St Marys series.

#BookReport
Managed to finish two books this week. One was my commute audiobook and the other was an impulse read.

#WeeklyForecast
I'm still struggling with my physical book and the book club book for work so I'm going to have to use the holiday weekend to push through on those. I also need to find another commute audiobook to commit to.

Loads of fun with the crew of St. Mary's. I think the OTTness is what makes me love these so much. Definitely not stand alone though. It's been a while since I've read the earlier ones so I had to find summaries to refresh my memory.

Candidly, I‘ve lost the ability to properly review these books. It‘s my favorite audiobook series; I‘m always so happy to be immersed in Max‘s world.

If pressed, criticisms include:
•This installment‘s a bit meandering.
•There‘s one problematic sentence, though I forget the content now. I don‘t think it was particularly egregious - just not especially *aware.*
•I‘m unsure about the last words, which (paraphrasing) once spoken can‘t be unspoken.

monalyisha There was also a markedly-awkward lack of Leon (though I suspect the reason is that he‘ll be *very* present in Book 7). 12mo
julesG I find it hard to review this series too. For the sane reasons. You're right, sometimes I notice a sentence that's more 😬. But it's forgotten by the end of the book. 12mo
Sapphire So, was it you that got me hooked on these audiobooks? 11mo
monalyisha @Sapphire Ha! It absolutely could have been! I know @julesG is a big fan, too. 😉 11mo
julesG Could have been me, indeed. @Sapphire St Mary's was my Covid/Lockdown series. I've re-read/listened to the books so often by now when my daughter listens to one of the audiobooks I instantly know which one it is by catching only a snippet. 11mo

Not sure if I reviewed this when I first read it. I'm on my third re-read right now. My brain needs something soothing and St Mary's does that for me.

@TrishB - since Richard III makes an appearance in this one, I'm wishing we had talked some more about the R in the car park. You probably know way more about Richard than I do. Can you remember the title of the time travelling book you mentioned?

TrishB I‘m looking! There seems to be a few around now- but I can‘t find the one I read. Will search the shelves later. The best non fiction about his life is this one - it‘s a chunkster. 3y
julesG @TrishB Thanks. I think one of you mentioned The Sunne in a zoom. 3y
TrishB @rockpools is currently reading 👍🏻 3y
TrishB Found it! Be warned - it‘s cheesy and not good writing! The Daughter of Time is also a good fictional intro. 3y
julesG @TrishB Thanks! Somehow missed this comment. 3y

Cleaned out the fridge this morning. #Audiomade some sort of Ratatouille, use up the sourdough-flatbread dough and cut up some fruit. Guess that's at least 7 of my 5-a-day.

What could go wrong? With the crew from St.Mary's - everything. Simple training jumps turn into chaos. I love this series about time-traveling historians. This was my last book for January. No #bookspinbingo this time.

12-26-20: My 112th finished book of 2020! Book 6 in the series. Max and her historian trainees visit Joan of Arc, Stone Age hunters and wooly mammoths, the Father of History and much more as they travel through time documenting and trying not to change things. As usual, it‘s a wild ride. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #whatcouldpossiblygowrong #joditaylor 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣1️⃣2️⃣

This time around Max has a new challenge...training up new historian recruits. And this novel definitely puts them through their paces. They witness Joan of Arc's death by fire, face off against saber tooth tigers, accidentally steal a baby mammoth, beat up Herodotus (the Father of Historians), and find that their greatest threat comes from within. Oh and they might have had a little hand in that whole Richard III being found in a car park thing.

Texreader A great series! 4y

Great fun with St. Mary‘s, as always. This series is a delight—hilarious banter, time travel hijinks (sorry—hijinks while investigating events in contemporary time), and ongoing storylines with characters I thoroughly enjoy. And in this one, I particularly enjoyed the baby mammoth.🐘😍

‘Actually,‘ said Hoyle, ‘can I have coffee? I don‘t like tea.‘ The world stopped spinning on its axis. Ten people eyed him with expressions ranging from condemnation to compassion via outright bewilderment. ‘Was it when you were in America?‘ asked Roberts, sympathetically. ‘Did they make you drink coffee there?‘

We don‘t usually jump less than one hundred years into the past. The official reason is that that way your younger selves, parents, and grandparents are all safely avoided. As I say, that‘s the official line. The unofficial reason is that Dr Bairstow won‘t let us go back to tease Stephen Hawking.

Yet another good one in the “Chronicles of St. Mary‘s” with a heck of a cliffhanger. As usual, I bought the audiobook even though I could get the digital version on Hoopla, this is just so much better with narration! This episode features deceit and more deceit and loads of cups of tea. #booked2018 #beachread

1 hanging out by water, sea, lake or boating pond makes me happy. It soothes the soul! 2 I think hanging out with the St marys folks would be fun if not high risk! 3. We host a summer bbq and a Christmas open house every year for our friends 4. Before getting sick it would have been red wine now I am pretty much on water with a glass of fruit juice a day. 5. Role on end of treatment! 5.I hate drizzle so I guess the snow? #humpdaypost @MinDea

My #firstread of 2018! This year, I want to a)finish more series, b)read more translated works, and c) be more of a mood reader! Also the title is totally how I feel about 2018 😅

And there it is...book 100 for the year.

I'm so happy I found this series as I do believe there is a dearth of quirky reads in the world. If you're looking for something light and off-kilter in your reading life I'd recommend this with the strength of a 1000 woolly mammoths.

DGRachel I loved this one! It is my favorite. 7y

What idiot starts reading a new book just before bed? Me. Genius.

MyBookLife Haha. Sorry. It's not easy for us dummies, we have to stick together 👩‍❤️‍👩👩‍❤️‍👩👩‍❤️‍👩 8y
DGRachel These are bad ones for me to start right before bed as I find St. Mary's usually hard to put down. 8y
mom2bugnbee I do the same. I'm the only night owl in my family, so that's when I get most of my reading time! There have been many nights I've started reading at 10pm, which is never good when the 5:30am alarm rings. 8y
roneea @DGRachel same! Once I start a St Mary's, I sit frozen in one spot until its done... 8y

How apropos that I finish this title before meeting the in laws. I love this series and still think it would be a great tv show. Bummer for me that my library doesn't have the next book, despite my request.

Merry Christmas to all and all a good morning.

Such a lot of fun! Love these St Mary's books. I'm both excited to start the next one and hesitant since there's only 1 1/2 books published still! (Chico was less impressed then I was - mostly bc I had to disturb him to get up for coffee when I was done.)

The best St. Mary's book yet! These are just so much fun—highly recommended! I've already got the seventh novel in my audiobook library, but since the eighth isn't out yet I'm going to try to hold off for a little while. (That'll be hard though—I only finished this one today, and I'm already desperate to start the next!)
