Seven for a Secret
Seven for a Secret | Lyndsay Faye
Timothy and Valentine Wilde must once again delve into the darkest underbelly of old New York. When the beautiful and terrified Mrs Lucy Adams stumbles into the Tombs, headquarters of New York's newly formed police force, it's the beginning of a dense, thorny maze of crime for copper star Timothy Wilde. He's hardened to the injustices of life in the unforgiving city he's grown up in, but that doesn't mean he accepts them. With immigrants flooding into the docks every day, each community is both adapting and fighting for its place in the new world, and there are many who fall victim to the clash. But the worst menace growing on the streets are the blackbirders; slave catchers who make a tidy sum from their human trade. And Timothy is about to be taken right to heart of them...

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

The 2nd in a series about a "copper star" (police officer) on the newly created police force in New York City in 1846. In this one, police officer Timothy Wilde delves into the seedy underworld of human trafficking where slave traders kidnap free Northerners of color from their homes, change their names and sell them South to toil as plantation slaves. Interesting and fast-paced, and I love the author's facility with the vernacular of the time.

This is the second book in a trilogy- the first was a favorite (especially recommend audio). This one is still a TBR. Those copper stars created NYC‘s #coptown and first officially organized law enforcement. #musicalnewyear

Amiable I enjoyed this series. I especially liked the focus on including historically accurate language. 6y
Crazeedi Looks good, what's the first book of this series? 6y

Chrissyreadit @Crazeedi there is a lot of use of language and slang that audible definitely added to the experience- but it is a great story read or heard. 6y
vivastory Sounds interesting 6y

Super late because I've somehow spent the day thinking it was Friday.. 😂 #friyayintro
1) I love the Timothy Wilde-trilogy. Does that count as a series? If not, Flavia de Luce ♥
2) Haven't been able to find something I really loved lately. I enjoy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, though.
3).. Wth is a world series? I watch all the sports, but mostly the European ones 😂
4) All the cake!
5) No idea 🤔

This is the second book in the series and it was as good as the first. It‘s a mix of history and mystery in 1840s NYC. This case focuses on blacks in the north and the fear of kidnappings by slave catchers. The topic is awful, but I felt I learned a lot while reading a really good mystery.

CoverToCoverGirl In my TBR pile somewhere! 🤣 7y

My favorite part of this book is how the author explains how thief slang from the 1800s came into common use today. This is just 1 example.

In Chicago for Christmas, was supposed to see my best friend, but her whole family has the flu 😢 At least I have this good book to read and a not totally uncomfortable hotel couch to sit on. #lazyday

This sequel to Gods of Gotham follows Timothy Wilde, New York's first detective in the Copper Star force, into the streets of New York City 1840s - where crimes, social tensions, politics, and all sorts of illegalities are the norm.

Pickpick

The second in Lyndsay Faye's GODS OF GOTHAM TRILOGY is an atmospheric historical crime story that makes the most of the location, the period and the horrors of slavery and has a wonderful antagonist in the form of the sociopath Silkie Marsh but I don't buy Timothy Wilde or his brother Valentine as their attitudes and behaviour are too 21st century for me, although I enjoyed their relationship and would read the other two books.

It's #RecommendsDay! And there will never come a day where I'm not yelling about Lyndsay Faye and the Timothy Wilde-trilogy. If you're the kind of person who digs historical fiction, mystery, very important and very wonderful queer and poc-characters and just generally characters you would take a bullet for, this is for you. (this is the third installment)
