This is without a doubt my favorite Penguin Classics cover of all time. The interior covers pirates from Francis Drake through Jean Laffite. New to me are the reports of 19th-century ships attacked by pirates. Everything is taken from source documents. Whether you are the least bit curious about pirates or you're a longtime fan, this one is one of the best out there.

A new look at the Golden Age of Piracy pirates and the notoriety in our modern culture. Savvy?

For those researching crime in the Victorian times then possibly this is just the book for you. Covering brothels, pornography, forgery, serial killers and a train robbery. Also covered was prostitution which maybe had a too much coveridge, coupled with details of the court cases, transcripts and news paper reports all of which took quite some time to read. Had the crime details been condensed rather than drawn out, I would have liked it more.

In this book, author Jeff Guinn, looks at the truth behind the headlines & the folk-myths about the notorious couple. Bonnie & Clyde - as usual the reality fails to live up to the 'glamorous' hype. They were certainly not master criminals, nearly everything they tried was either bungled or foiled due to bad luck & timing. Alongside a jail break (that Clyde got the credit for but didn't actually plan) & several bank hold-ups, (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf most of their crimes were small-time robberies of stores & gas stations. Money hauls were usually small-time allowing them to live day to day, but no massive paydays.

The author does a good job of humanising the two without glamorising what they actually did. Lest we forget, the Barrow gang killed their fair share of people, but we can also see that Bonnie & Clyde did love each other & their families.

OutsmartYourShelf I found this an informative & interesting read, & the author obviously did a lot of research judging by the copious notes & bibliography. Overall, great research & well-written. 4🌟

I decided to read this after The Foundling raised the issues of criminality, heredity, and eugenics. It‘s an excellent exploration of how at least 60 members of just one family have been imprisoned or under supervision for committing a crime. The book doesn‘t really settle the nature/nurture debate; it‘s likely an interaction between the two - as with so many other (anti)social phenomena. A family saga of a different kind ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
