Etched in Sand: A True Story of Five Siblings Who Survived an Unspeakable Childhood on Long Island
Etched in Sand: A True Story of Five Siblings Who Survived an Unspeakable Childhood on Long Island | Regina Calcaterra
14 posts | 22 read | 17 to read
Regina s Calcaterra memoir, Etched in Sand, is an inspiring and triumphant coming-of-age story of tenacity and hope.Regina Calcaterra is a successful lawyer, New York State official, and activist. Her painful early life, however, was quite different. Regina and her four siblings survived an abusive and painful childhood only to find themselves faced with the challenges of the foster-care system and intermittent homelessness in the shadows of Manhattan and the Hamptons.A true-life rags-to-riches story, Etched in Sand chronicles Regina s rising above her past, while fighting to keep her brother and three sisters together through it all.Beautifully written, with heartbreaking honesty, Etched in Sand is an unforgettable reminder that regardless of social status, the American Dream is still within reach for those who have the desire and the determination to succeed."

Book 101

A memoir about a family of five kids growing up with a mother who is an alcoholic that moved them from one disastrous place to another and would disappear for months at a time. It was a quick, sad read, but not meritorious of a recommendation.

This was a really heartbreaking story about a horrific childhood in and out of the system. It was a little reminiscent of The Glass Castle. The writing was extremely compelling and it was really great on audio. Definitely recommend for people who like this type of memoir.

I am 3 chapters in, and my son (6) came up and read the front of the book. He asked me what my book was about, so I told him what I had learned so far. I explained that it was a real story. He shook his head in disbelief. He asked me why am I reading this book if I know it is about something so devastating? Because it teaches us all so much. So much... that otherwise we wouldn't know about, or ways to help. 💔

Another day working outside with extended breaks. My sister's friend recommended this book to me. When I saw it on daily deals for 1.99 I figured why not.

Lcsmcat @cinfhen Don't skip the Prologue. Knowing how they all came out made reading the rest bearable. 😀 7y
Cinfhen Thanks! I imagine this book is brutal 😣 7y

A memoir of a horrific childhood told by a #survivor who, along with her 4 siblings, managed to grow up and thrive in spite of their early life. #melodicmay @jenniferw88

If there wasn't a Prologue letting you know they all survived, and even thrived, this would be an unbearable read. How anyone could treat a stranger's child this way, much less their own child, is beyond incomprehensible. But the strength and love and resilience of these girls shines through. #LitsyAtoZ #LetterE

Great story of overcoming a difficult childhood. Audiobook is narrated by the author, complete with authentic Long Island accent.
