Warriors Don't Cry
Warriors Don't Cry: The Searing Memoir of the Battle to Integrate Little Rock's Central High | Melba Pattillo Beals
The landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, brought the promise of integration to Little Rock, Arkansas, but it was hard-won for the nine black teenagers chosen to integrate Central High School in 1957. They ran a gauntlet flanked by a rampaging mob and a heavily armed Arkansas National Guardopposition so intense that soldiers from the elite 101st Airborne Division were called in to restore order. For Melba Beals and her eight friends those steps marked their transformation into reluctant warriorson a battlefield that helped shape the civil rights movement. Warriors Don't Cry, drawn from Melba Beals's personal diaries, is a riveting true account of her junior year at Central Highone filled with telephone threats, brigades of attacking mothers, rogue police, fireball and acid-throwing attacks, economic blackmail, and, finally, a price upon Melba's head. With the help of her English-teacher mother; her eight fellow warriors; and her gun-toting, Bible-and-Shakespeare-loving grandmother, Melba survived. And, incredibly, from a year that would hold no sweet-sixteen parties or school plays, Melba Beals emerged with indestructible faith, courage, strength, and hope.

1. I've always been inspired by the women in my family. My great-grandmother immigrated to the US by herself at 17. My grandmother took care of her sisters & their farm when her father & brothers were fighting in The Winter War. There's more, but I'm going to run out of space: They are all strong, amazing women.
2. I've tagged Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Beales, one of the Little Rock Nine. (Yes, I have Beyonce's album on the brain.)

This memoir is heartbreaking, inspiring, and very well written. As hard as it was to read, I couldn‘t put it down. I can only hope to be a fraction as strong as Ms. Beals one day, though it‘s a shame that any child should have had to be so strong and persevere through so much.

1. Warriors Don't Cry, Ruthless Bishop and Flowers in the Attic.
2. The last few Sookie books.
3. Today we moved furniture and did a dump run. Tomorrow, my husband will be working on his car which means I'll be reading outside while he does that. We are one of those couples that do separate activities while next to each other. 😍

The stone steps are slippery with morning drizzle as we begin the tedious climb up to the front door of Central High School.

Ugly crying now! When the cover says, “searing” and “battle”, they are right. I had no idea the level of despicable, relentless abuse these children endured EVERY SINGLE DAY, and yet they find the fortitude to press on. HEROES!

Saw the stellar Little Rock #play (with music) last night at the Sheen Center in #nyc - it was absolutely phenomenal and impactful. It tells the story of integration at Central High School and the incredible Little Rock 9. For a wonderful book about this important period of history, I highly recommend Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, one of the nine.

Melba Pattillo was one of the Little Rock Nine. This is a memoir about that time of her life and what it was like. Harrowing, heartbreaking but were you expecting less?

Warriors Don't Cry is about the Little Rock 9, the first black students to be integrated into a all white school, and it's one of those novels that will stick with you forever. Based on a true story, this book is by far one of the best books ive come across. It's so powerful. To think the world once thought and acted like that. It's heartbreaking. I highly recommend this book to all.
