so-soThe use of first person narration made the character feel relatable while Billy was the worst - a chronic liar who attempted to drug his finance and coerce her into sex, while leading on two other women. My anxiety went through the roof as his lies unravelled. I was rooting for him to leave it all behind and start afresh, even though nothing waited him in London. The horribly deprssing ending held a moral, the consequences must be faced.

This was a very entertaining and interesting book. The lesson learned from this book is: You can tell all the lies you want but in the end, you are only deceiving yourself. It is a cynical portrait of society but you can't but help like the well-developed characters in Billy Liar. Read this book for a very entertaining read.
Soon the whole incident had passed into history, to be exhumed and dissected soon, but not now.

so-soI didn't like this as much as I hoped. The comparison to Lucky Jim, which I liked a lot, was promising. But I've read Lucky Jim in high school, maybe I am just getting too old to like this kind of funny meant novels. I didn't really have to laugh, and I didn't really get nervous by the mess Billy makes of his life with all his lies.

One of my favourite genres is 50's/60's British kitchen sink drama- this is a classic story of desire to escape a small town and spawned a classic film scene of tom courtenay and Julie christie on a train platform.
