Y - The Last Man
Y - The Last Man | Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra, Jose Marzan, Jr.
Y: THE LAST MAN, winner of three Eisner Awards and one of the most critically acclaimed, best-selling comic books series of the last decade, is that rare example of a page-turner that is at once humorous, socially relevant and endlessly surprising. Written by Brian K. Vaughan (LOST, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD, EX MACHINA) and with art by Pia Guerra, this is the saga of Yorick Brownthe only human survivor of a planet-wide plague that instantly kills every mammal possessing a Y chromosome. Accompanied by a mysterious government agent, a brilliant young geneticist and his pet monkey, Ampersand, Yorick travels the world in search of his lost love and the answer to why he's the last man on earth. Collects Y THE LAST MAN #1-10.

I honestly can't remember how far I got in this series the first time I tried it, for all I know, it wasn't a heavy course load or a sucky mid-twenties job that stopped me finishing it (as it stopped me reading most things for about a decade), it was that the publication run hadn't yet finished. This time I checked series completion status before I started! And after this volume, I'm very interested in reading on. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? What I'm now used to from Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Paper Girls) holds: the content is not for kiddies, but the banter is en pointe. 14mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Fascinating exploration of the possible changes - not only in a female only/female led modern society (not to erase historical matriarchies/female politicians or Queen-fronted monarchies) but also a post-apocalyptic society, where near half it's population disappeared and all the existing geopolitical structures are struggling to get back on their feet. Let the chaos continue! 14mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/5 On top of which is the mystery of what happened to kill almost all that men... library hold placed on the next book!
*rubs hands in anticipation*
14mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 ⚠️Bodily fluids bonanza, mentions of SA, self-mutilation, pretty consistent bloody violence but not heavy on the gore 14mo

Decided to revisit this volume to continue reading the series. My first read I found Yorick interesting...in my second read, I'm questioning as to why he lived and the rest of male species were wiped out-I guess that's what Brian K Vaughn wants us to think. I would like to see what comes up in volume 2 #graphicnovels

📖 - “Y the Last Man” by Brian K Vaughan, my favorite graphic novel series! 🤓

Omg, I LOVED this!! One of my best friends husband recommended this series to me ages ago. This image is a different style than what the rest of the actual comic is, but it was one of the most striking and my favorite. Every mammal on Earth with a Y chromosome has mysteriously and simultaneously died, all but the man Yorick and his monkey, Ampersand. Embarking on a quest to track down a cloning doctor to help save mankind, Yorick and co. must ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm travel across the country while dodging everyone from the Israeli army to an insane cult calling themselves the Amazons. The author doesn‘t hold back with critiques of every facet of life that manages to separate people. Racism, gender politics, incarceration vs. rehabilitation, nothing is off the table, and I can‘t wait to see what develops in the next book. Methinks I have an inkling as to who‘s supplying the Israeli‘s with Yorick‘s coordinates. 4y
Texreader Insanely good review!! I‘m not a comic book reader, but this one? You may have convinced me. (edited) 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Texreader I‘m quite picky when it comes to comics/graphic novels. Especially if I‘m spending money on them, because I read them so fast, it‘s sometimes not worth the price tag. 😅 I‘d love to hear your thoughts if you do decide to check it out! ❤️ 4y

I loved Vaughan‘s Saga series, so picking up “Y: The Last Man” was a no-brainer; but I should have started it right after I picked it up in ‘19 rather than waiting to do so now. The art was crisp & expressive and, the storyline held a tension reminiscent of King‘s, ‘The Stand‘ (I can see why SK would give it a rave blurb); but reading PA stories right now doesn‘t offer me the escapism I crave during “These Uncertain Times”.

Still, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🙂

Here‘s an example of what I mean about the time thing: The whole of the first issue of “Unmanned” is a countdown happening in near real-time. This page counts down the final seconds in the story in just as many seconds as it takes to read it and yet when you look at the page as a whole you see how it‘s part of one actual moment, the breath before the next page.

Bette ❤️ this series 5y

Just started this one about an hr ago and finished the first issue of “Unmanned.” I‘m a slow comics book reader because I not only read the text, I look at every panel carefully, and how it‘s all laid out on the page. It‘s hard to explain, but it‘s like looking at things in real, non-linear time with each page, each shift in color. I know, I know... What drugs am I on?! 😜

Anyway, a virus is wiping out all w/a Y chromosome except this 1 guy...

A very engaging premise: all men on earth suddenly, mysteriously die from a violent plague like disease, leaving just one left. Yorick Brown and his male pet monkey Ampersand travel in search of his girlfriend Beth, but along the way discover that being the last man on earth puts a target on his back.

Read the first volume of this today and I'm like...ehhhhh? It felt sexist, I didn't appreciate the depictions of Arab peoples, including Palestinians, the main character, Yorick, is a bumbling annoyance, and the monkey is a cheap tack-on... Does it get better? I know a lot of people love this series.

Do you own multiple copies of the same book?

With its brilliant storytelling and dynamic characters that leap off the page, “Y The Last Man” is my favorite graphic novel series of all time. I love it so much that I own digital and paperback copies of the entire series, as well as this beautiful hardcover edition with oversized pages to really bring out the artwork and lettering. It can truly be said I can‘t get enough of this series! 😀📚

Branwen I always keep multiple copies of the same books-especially if they are favorites! I have ebooks and paperbacks of the Wheel of Time series, and paperbacks, hardcovers, AND leatherbound copies of the Game of Thrones series! 😁 6y

DaveGreen7777 @Branwen In the series, a mysterious plague literally wiped out every man on Earth... except one named Yorick. As the women rebuild society, government, and law in a world without men, Yorick tries to discover why he was spared by the plague. I think you‘d really like it, Becky, a lot of feminist principles are explored throughout the series! 😀 6y

I loved this comic & will be making a return trip to the store to get the remaining volumes. Today. It. Is. That. Good. All the men, boys, & mammals with Y chromosomes are dead—except Yorick & his pet monkey (also a boy). Women fall into one of two camps—Amazons who want to kill Yorick & his pet, & others who want them alive. There‘s more of course & the ending leaves you sorta 😮 & wow, I want to read more. Being last man on Earth is not so easy.

Feeling restless & having a little trouble picking the next book to read so, I‘m going with a comic for tonight‘s reading. Stephen King blurbed it & said it was the “best graphic novel I‘ve ever read.” This was one of the Chicago Comics recommendations—in 2002, every man, every boy & every mammal with a Y chromosome on Earth dies—with the exception of a single man & his pet monkey—leaving women to rebuild civilization. Sounds awesome!

Interesting enough, but this is one of those rare cases where I completely recognized this book was intended to be a set-up book, and was made impatient by it. I usually am pretty forgiving of books for taking the time to world-build, but not in this case. There was quite a bit to ponder, and at no time did the pacing feel too slow. I just felt like the book wasn't quite hitting its intended mark. I might pick up the second book... eventually.

I've had this one for a while and I finally got round to reading it. I enjoyed it, buut I'm not 100% sure how I feel about it. I'm definitely going to read the rest ( but later, I'm currently on a book buying ban 😂) but the truth is while I love the premise and some aspects there are others I didn't love ( not sure how I feel about the amazons for example) and so far yorick is the least interesting character - but still a fun read.

hlgreenfield I mean I did really like it, but I didn't love it as much as Saga which is maybe what I expected. Maybe I had too high expectations after Saga! 7y
Eyelit I think Saga sets everyone's expectations too high 😄 7y
hlgreenfield @Eyelit that's probably it. When I get used to the idea that this isn't going to be as good as Saga, then I'll be able to enjoy it more for what it is. It is a good story - I just didn't immediately fall in love with the characters and story the way I did with Saga. 7y
vivastory I second the other comments. I liked Y, but it pales compared to Saga. Have you read Jeff Lemire's"Sweet Tooth"? 7y

Gone on a graphic novel kick today. This is Bk1 of Y:The Last Man & it was very interesting, but very dark & violent. 2002 and in a second everything alive with a Y chromosome, be it man, animal etc, is dead. All except a young man called Yorrick & his monkey Ampersand. Now he just has to stay alive to save humankind, and yeah find his girlfriend in Australia. As expected in a Brian.K.Vaughan comic, it's complicated. 4⭐️
