The Legendary Miss Lena Horne
The Legendary Miss Lena Horne | Carole Boston Weatherford
6 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
Celebrate the life of Lena Horne, the pioneering African American actress and civil rights activist, with this inspiring and powerful picture book from award-winning author Carole Boston Weatherford. You have to be taught to be second class; you’re not born that way. Lena Horne was born into the freedom struggle, to a family of teachers and activists. Her mother dreamed of being an actress, so Lena followed in her footsteps as she chased small parts in vaudeville, living out of a suitcase until MGM offered Lena something more—the first ever studio contract for a black actress. But the roles she was considered for were maids and mammies, stereotypes that Lena refused to play. Still, she never gave up. “Stormy Weather” became her theme song, and when she sang “This Little Light of Mine” at a civil rights rally, she found not only her voice, but her calling.

"You have to be taught to be second class; you're not born that way." -Lena Horne

Excellent biography about singing and activist legend, Lena Horne. She learned to read before kindergarten, and books were her lifelong love! #kidlit #picturebook

Texreader That's a wonderful factoid! Thanks for sharing! 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm The author was a professor at the university where I did my undergrad. She is incredibly nice and her children's literature class was impossible to get in! 7y
EvieBee @Texreader You are welcome! I love finding other bibliophiles in history. 😊 7y
EvieBee @Mariposa_Bookworm Seriously? That is pretty amazing. And that is definitely a class I would have loved to get into. 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm @EvieBee Yes, as far as I know she is still teaching at Fayetteville State University, here in NC. 7y

The illustrations are GORGEOUS. I couldn't pick a favorite. Lena Horne seems like a complicated figure with a complicated history and I felt like the book jumped around a lot trying to cover a bit too much within a picture book length. I wish it had decided to focus a bit more. Still, a good introduction. It certainly made me want to read a more about her!

Suzze Fabulous illustrations! 8y
angrylilasian I love that I'm seeing more books like this! 8y
candyflossramparts If you like Lena Horne and listen to podcasts, I highly recommend episode 33 of You Must Remember This. Fascinating stuff! 8y

Now THIS is a well-done picture book biography. What else would you expect from Carole Boston Weatherford? And Liz Zunon's illustrations and collage work...she is definitely on my radar.

Lena Horne was a fierce fighter, and it comes across so well here. In addition to becoming a renowned actress, singer, and Civil Rights activist, she was an avid reader, too! Natch.
