This may have once been groundbreaking, but it has not aged well. It is certainly not as universal as she assumes. It is highly gender normative, making it stunningly uncomfortable. The writing is repetitive and annoying. The tone is arrogant and snobby. This needs a serious update and attitude adjustment to keep any of the promises of its reputation.

TheBookHippie 30 plus ? years ago it was transformative and I hope it gets an update. Some good nibblets in it but MAN …. You really have to dice it up to get the good bits. Still- I‘m grateful for every life it saved and touched. For some women this saved their lives and I cannot discount it. 1w

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie for women whose lives were truly saved by this book, yes, I will give it credit for that. I can‘t help thinking it‘s actually hurting some folks she would call women (and some she wouldn‘t who would call themselves women) today. It‘s definitely not for everyone. 1w

TheBookHippie @GingerAntics me screaming at book YOU DO NOT NEED A MAN. … need… NO. But 30 years ago it wouldn‘t get published if it was anything but heterosexual. It assumes you have to have a partner. Single people exist happily. Sigh. And yes … there‘s no room for any LGBTQIA peeps when it was published it was lesbian or gay maybe BI never Trans and even then… nope. I am so afraid we will go back there … 1w

All right, I‘m officially calling it quits. I don‘t have the bandwidth for this book, I never want to pick it up, and I‘m not getting out of it what I‘d hoped to (and what I get out of Jean Shinoda Bolen‘s books, really). So, for the second time, this one has defeated me.

OH HERE WE GO!!! Anytime someone writes about sacred sexuality, they always get weird with it. I‘m either laughing or cringing, and sitting here thinking… yeah no. I‘m already getting ‘yeah no‘ vibes from this book, so this is just going to be… 🤣😂🤦🏻‍♀️… bloodily brilliant. I think I‘m going to have to take a minute before diving into this chapter… at least until I stop laughing about the title of the chapter.

I see some of the problematic in the work personally and recognize her growth journey was far from complete too. I‘m grateful to live during a time when woke is both a four letter word loud and proud) and 4w

I really need someone to teach me how to cook, how to like cooking, and how to store food. I‘m not thriving because health becomes overwhelming and if I could just get this accomplished I feel like i could reduce the amount of drowning I am doing.

mcctrish I guess I‘d start with what is your favourite food? If you look at a menu what jumps out at you? Then I‘d look for foodie people on IG, or TikTok if that‘s your jam, who make food like it and see if you can do it too 1mo

Tamra I echo watching home cooks (not professionals) cooking on YouTube for inspiration and ideas. The professionals make everything seem pretty & perfect and that‘s just not real life. At least in my house. 😉 (edited) 1mo

ravenlee I started following Liam Layton recently on Facebook (he‘s @theplantslant on other social media, which is beyond my ken), and I find a lot of inspiration from his videos. Not a how-to, step-by-step guide, but I‘ve been surprised how helpful it can be. 1mo

SamAnne I love Deborah Madison‘s vegetarian cooking for everyone. Great even if you aren‘t vegetarian (I‘m not but veggie forward). Just super simple recipes. Still a go to for me 20 plus years later. (edited) 1mo

I constantly try to fit in in WV. My son and I just had a several hours long conversation about masking- something I‘ve done purposefully since High School (for senior celebrity i was class ditz) Sometimes it is to reduce loneliness and sometimes it is for ease- but now I feel myself slipping in and out of the masks because it feels necessary and appropriate in the situation. Sometimes life-ing is just hard!

For my senior year of high school little witchy me made friends with this girl who was really sweet but she and her friends (who were also pretty nice) were extremely religious Baptists. And to get along with them I had to play good little Christian girl. I know it was my choice but I about drove myself crazy 🤦🏼‍♀️ 1mo

ravenlee I mostly don‘t try very hard, but I do kind of…selectively mask? Depending on my setting, I dial down certain aspects of my personality. The person I am with the homeschool moms is slightly different than with the dance moms, and pretty different still from the me who is a working musician. I don‘t try to be someone who will be loved and accepted by everyone, but I guess I do try to be…acceptable? in a given situation. 1mo

I really appreciate the opportunity in this book to recognize me. I am a pretty messy, emotional, curious and caring person. I can be judgy at times (my shadow side) and do strive to be compassionate. I‘m also frustrated with myself for not being smarter, more organized and less chaotic.

GingerAntics I think my authentic self is me without masking. Letting myself stim when I need to. Letting myself move away from bright lights and loud noises when I need to. It‘s just me making space for those needs and taking care of those needs in ways that work within the situation (or moving out of the situation if those small modifications aren‘t being honoured or allowed). 1mo

Hi friends! As you can tell I am not someone who is consistent with timelines and due dates. My combination of Chronic Epstein Barr (2 week flare i think i‘m at end of) and ADHD (I really struggle with planning ahead) mean I will be getting posts out but not on a consistent timeline. Please feel free to post at anytime whenever you choose- and wherever you are in the book.

Chrissyreadit I think i still wrestle with guilt if I am not putting my energy into mothering others. I am working on the concept of self care- but i apply it to myself as a drill sergeant instead of as a mother. I really need to think about how and what mothering myself could be. 1mo

GingerAntics This is a hard one for me. I don‘t understand the idea of mothering yourself. Mothering means taking care of someone and when you‘re doing the taking care of, there are only very limited ways you can be the recipient of that. Literally, kids have to be taught self care. Maybe it‘s just self care. I don‘t know. The math doesn‘t math for me on this. Maybe it‘s just me. 1mo

TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics I can‘t use the word mother/mom without my skin crawling but I do remind myself and even get reminded by MR BH -“what would your Grandma say, she would say take the break eat the cookie, drink the tea, snuggle in the blanket… the world can wait.” I use that every morning -I slow start mornings&eat a good breakfast -because that‘s what she‘d tell me to do. Make food share it, bake bread it helps she would say. ⬇️ 1mo

TheBookHippie @GingerAntics my very good friend who has passed on through the veil use to tell me to just think of Love as an entity or being and use that in place of mother. Love wants you to be you, take care of you because it‘s love. 1mo

In previous chapters we read about learning to trust ourselves, then this sentence appears! It is a terrifying perspective for those of us who have lived with domestic violence- but in a specific context it is most likely a vital truth. The context of fear, trust and safety- and how do we ever find it after the death of that experience? That is when we have to discern between fear because of danger vs fear because of trauma. Thoughts?

Chrissyreadit In a slightly different context- have you ever been afraid of what being in a relationship would mean for you? 2mo

Chrissyreadit Relationships become tricky for many reasons- but do mean that there is a joining by nature- that can make one stronger and safer- Has it ever been scary to transition in and/or out of relationships? 2mo

Chrissyreadit I can honestly say that I have probably avoided some men I should have dated and dated some men I should have avoided… Now i am focusing on my relationship with myself. 2mo

Sedna is mentioned in the first part of this chapter so i thought i would share the Goddess card reflection of her I have. If you read it I would be curious to hear how it was received or impacted your thoughts in relation to this chapter and yourself.

AnnCrystal I love this! Sedna was one of the first I read about when I began researching my own Ancestral World.

My ancestors are from Arizona, grandma of my mom's mother.

But I consider the whole of the Americas as my Ancestral World.

This was fascinating for me. Not the tragic of the story, because is felt equal in the extraordinary elements to the tales I read from other “outside“ cultures. From Greece, Nordic, Egypt, Asian, etc.

My responses are leaving high school, endings of friendships, home the way i lived in it and going to college, then leaving college and going to work- then end of childhood and beginning of adulting…. and of course life after divorce - This cycle does play out in numerous ways through life experiences.

TheBookHippie I worked in locked units-I left it when my daughter was 3 -I just couldn‘t risk myself -I loved it so, but I switched to locked Alzheimer‘s units -at the time this was normal.. I did this for a long time but had to quit when pregnant with my son, when I switched over to education and reading literacy advocacy. All things that were bittersweet. 2mo

GingerAntics The only thing this brought to mind to me was genuine childhood. When I hit puberty, a lot of my hopes were dashed… so it wasn‘t necessarily a happier/better beginning, but I think it‘s getting there for me. 2mo

nanuska_153 I changed my speciality a couple times, I get the feeling that I need to learn something new from time to time and I switch.Currently trying to change from being the door that everyone knocks when they have a Property Law question to start from 0 in Criminal Law. It's always scary because I like to be considered an expert and it's tough to go through the stress of not knowing how to do your job,but if I feel I can't grow anymore I have to leave. 2mo

This chapter was interesting- It seemed to have a significant overlap with parts work as well as shadow work. The part that gives up, the part that gets distracted, the part that perseveres… I can relate to all of it. The concept of shadow work is in accepting the parts of ourselves we are uncomfortable with. Through a somatic lens it‘s recognizing the body and brain want us to be safe. My ADHD brain is better suited to some tasks!

Chrissyreadit I know there are times i‘ve had to be stern with myself, use timers and trackers as well as ask for help and grace. This activity is a great example! I love it- but reading, then writing questions all require my focus more than most tasks- and Sometimes it feels overwhelming- and i‘m easily distracted. But once i start i‘m all in!!! 2mo

Cuilin Ugh ADHD here too. I go between hating this about myself and then other times completely just accepting it and going with the flow. (And if that is not an indicator of being ADHD, I don‘t know what is lol) but I‘m tired of carrying the shame and guilt. 2mo

It‘s such a struggle,I know.My mom had our family very organized- school, homework, rotating work chart-I learned to be open about my ADD but it is easy at work as I work with spec ed students-also, much of my family is similar.The ability to hyper focus is a gift- losing things or leaving them behind is not! but the Tile app is my best friend for finding keys, wallet, even my kindle !!!! 2mo

I have one stuck to my kindle, in my wallet, etc. they come in all sizes. Best Buy carries them I think as well as mail order. Not cheap but you can get replacement batteries for some. (edited) 2mo

Sorry- I am definitely a week or so behind.
I do believe names are important- and are why people have nicknames, change their name, use a married name or keep their name from birth. I personally love hearing how people came by their names too. I think names may speak about who we are- there are people who shorten their name and people who use completed names- go by formal address or first names. It all helps us start the conversation.

ravenlee One of the things about my husband‘s family (him included) that has baffled me for 20 years is that they‘re weird about names. Hub‘s sister is rarely called by her name, just her first initial (which is mine, too, and confused me at first). The cat my MIL had when I met hubby, the cat who loved him and despised me, was never called by her name (Ivy), but was any number of insulting nicknames, including “GrayFat.” 👇🏻 2mo

ravenlee Everything and everybody has some weird pseudonym, and it has taken me years to sort out who they‘re talking about. I still don‘t get some of them. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo

I was named for my paternal grandmother & I feel a kinship with her & her life story despite the fact she was dead before I was born. There are so many instances of names & the power they hold. nanuska_153 I'm really behind with my reading for work reasons, but I do think names hold power and identity, that's why in concentration camps they switched their names for numbers. It's so alien to me also that some women change their surnames when married, it's not a thing in Spain so when I moved to Ireland it really shocked me.I read it is inherited from a time when women didn't have capacity so they went from being under the guardianship of the father⬇️ 2mo

nanuska_153 to the husband. My surname is Armenian, my grandparents escaped during the genocide, so I can't imagine giving it up and erasing them and that part of me from history. It's part of who I am and where I came from, why would I change it for my husband's history? 2mo

Bookwomble ADHD can come in the flavour of intense focus that's hard to disengage from, so perhaps us ADHDers can enter altered states of consciousness more easily in certain circumstances 🤔 2mo

Deblovestoread As a mother who raised an ADHD son I can verify that if the activity was something he liked he could would be all in if the timing was right. Put a fishing pole in his hands it was the most zen thing I ever saw. 2mo

Chrissyreadit One of my favorite books on ADHD is ADHD 2.0 I know that there were so many things i could not understand about myself until the past few years and that book has been a great tool. Also Breathework. On a more personal thought- The co morbidity of ADHD and CPTSD would be someone who is always alert but unable to sink in for fear of losing alertness of environment. I think when we feel safe and interested magic can happen. 2mo

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit I wasn‘t aware of the comorbidity between ADHD and CPTSD… but that makes SO much sense to me. I‘ll have to go look this up. 2mo

Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics It‘s not that there is common comorbidity- it‘s the when there is co morbidity- yes look up!!! I could have a huge convo about ADHD- that i considere a superpower- until i became sick AND developed PTSD- everything became challenging…. 2mo

I love learning I love hearing what other people have to say. We often have “a feeling” but do not know how to respond. Have you ever questioned your intuition? I know that my intuition is often right but sometimes i ignore it because it is “inconvenient “.

AmyG I have been working on listening to my intuition more. How many times, in hindsight, have I realized I should have been listening to myself. But sometimes intuition is a fleeting thought proven correct all along. For me, it‘s trying to be aware of those. 3mo

Kerrbearlib I didn‘t used to listen to my intuition because I was taught not to trust it. I‘ve since realized society brainwashes people, especially women, to not trust our intuition. I think this quote from Controlling People sums it up perfectly: “many people have learned to distrust their own intuition and everyone else's, too. It was not so long ago that those who listened to their intuition were called witches and warlocks.” I trust my intuition now.

This is something that lives in my thoughts all the time… We are being fear mongered about immigrants.. vaccines… books…and because our brains are hard wired to seek safety it is easy for some people to give in to the fear mongering. In the end Baba Yaga was the provider of safety….

AmyG With all the fear mongering in our news, I have had moments of “fearful doubt”? I recently got vaccines and for a hot minute I felt fear. But I was able to tell myself, listen to myself, that this is science and nothing to fear. 3mo

Cuilin As an immigrant myself living in America, yeah I‘ve been full of fear a lot lately. It‘s definitely affecting my health. A few years ago, I was in a coffee shop and somebody said something to me about not being American and then ended it with, but you‘re the right type of immigrant so you‘re OK. Like WTF? ravenlee There‘s so much fear of the unknown, fear of the different. It‘s particularly bad now, but it‘s not a recent phenomenon. People in general are afraid of what they do not understand. Sometimes that fear is protective, but it almost cuts off our realm of experience if we never push past it. 2mo

ravenlee I didn‘t grow up with Baba Yaga exactly, but I encountered the stories sometime in my adolescence. Now I‘m starting to think about elements of the BY/Vasilisa stories in books I‘ve read. For instance, Ilona Andrews incorporates Vasilisa into the Kate Daniels world (specifically the Roman novella Sanctuary), Patricia Briggs‘ Mercy Thompson series features a Baba Yaga who is involved in MLM sales… 2mo

You are right that too many times women stay in dangerous relationships with a misconception of love. Maybe the first step is defining healthy love, then feeling safe when it is healthy. 3mo

My perspective is different because of my 34 year-old marriage-early in our marriage my husband suffered a series of devastating losses: after 22 yrs.,he lost the job he was passionate about due to a buy out, his younger brother died suddenly, leaving behind an infant & 5 yr.old, his mother died of cancer. As someone who has been stalked and assaulted I have a hard time finding the romance in any of this- it lends more to horror for me (although i did think Hooked told a good story and was shocked i liked it) But when reading chapter 2 in the book I wonder if this is a different way to understand the dark man in our psyches. GingerAntics Yeah, I‘ve wondered that myself. I used to enjoy those books as a teen, until I was stalked, abused, etc. Now they just don‘t sit right with me. I‘ve always seen it as the predator trying to convince us that their harm is actually good/romantic. I find it troubling that more and more of this is written by women. 3mo

Only reason I say this is it‘s how I feel and then I got into a discussion with some women and they said they read it for comfort because it was comforting. TheBookHippie Don‘t read this type of book. I don‘t read certain subjects because I do not believe it‘s ethical and is sometimes theater trauma or voyeur trauma. No thanks. There are things I lived I care not to read about. It‘s not what I use reading for. I however have no issue with people who need it or want it. Personal choice is not my business. 🙃 3mo

I still find it heartbreaking that falling for the predator is this massive trope. I mean, even Beauty and the Beast falls into this. We‘re selling it to little kids as normal. 3mo

ravenlee I wonder if some of the appeal of reading this is that, at any point, you can put it down. It‘s a small power, but sometimes that‘s all you‘ve got. Maybe the glimpse into the male motivation validates something for some readers (largely the ones who think rape is about sex rather than power - I had someone explain rape fantasy to me as “making a man so wild he can‘t overcome his desire for me” 🤢). 3mo

I have been stalked/beaten/tortured/sexually assaulted AND I have read these types of books (only Lights Out on this list). I don't know why I do. I don't know if its a feeling of control. Most of the books that seem easiest to run across are usually the ones showcasing abuse and bullying as romance. It enrages me that it seems so difficult to find romance stories that depict good, well structured relationships.

Truthfully, I'm not much of a romance reader, I prefer love stories to that are woven into the background of the main story events. 3mo

AmyG Absolutely. I tend to give people alot of “rope to hang themselves with”. Once I reach my limit with someone because of how they treat me or others….I am done. No more chances. I am quite rigid in that respect. 3mo

ElizaMarie My compartmentalizm. I work as a psychiatric/mental health nurse. I engage with a challenging population and am not well-treated by most of my patients. I am able to remove myself from the nasty insults getting slung at me, do what needs to be done in the moment, and maintain my peace (which can be difficult). It turns into a problem when I do this way too much and build too strong walls. (But thats what therapy is for 🤍) 3mo

Deblovestoread I really feel this quote. I feel like I have compartmentalized each section of my life based on that times trauma. My child self is one being raised by an angry mother whose words and hands struck out, my teenage rebel self who made horrible choices and so on. They each informed the next but also each lives in their little pocket if that makes sense. 3mo

Hey #WildWomen - I haven‘t gotten into the discussions because my new copy (bigger print!) was stinky and needed airing out. I thought I‘d catch up this weekend, but I landed in the ER today for a few hours (tried to get a tattoo, now I have 3.5 octopus tentacles and that‘s it 😆 because I had a vagal seizure partway through) so my plans have…changed. I‘ll catch up when I‘m able! I‘m home, resting and recharging, and headed for okay.

I've been having a lot of trouble with the way this book is written (so. many. words.) so I picked up the abridged audiobook on Libby, with Estes telling some of the stories and explaining some of the concepts, and I found it much more accessible. I think sometimes storytelling and writing are two very different things. Figured I'd mention the audiobook in case others are having trouble with the book as I was. #womenwhorunwiththewolves

I alluded to this in a previous post, but the most lasting traditions in my family center around bedtime routines. We've tried a lot of things, but this one has stuck the longest. Since my younger kid was 2 or 3, we've been doing a bedtime routine we call "gratefuls, sorries, and intends" in which we go around and each list one thing from the day for which we're grateful, one thing for which we're sorry, and one thing we intend for the next day.⬇️

ImperfectCJ Over the past year, we've also been reading one entry from The Daily Stoic. When we have overnight guests, they join in. When the college kid comes home for breaks, they join back in. If someone's out of town, we'll often schedule calls for bedtime so we can keep the routine. I was interviewed about it for a local radio segment about how families were weathering the pandemic. We don't have many other traditions, but I'm grateful we have this one.

ImperfectCJ @lil1inblue My spouse and I were reflecting on the fact that, because we started doing the routine when he was so young, our son (now 16) likely has no concrete memories of bedtime without this routine. It's a humbling reminder of how parents shape their children's experience of life. I'm grateful we have this one intentional tradition in addition to the many sometimes not as awesome unintentional habits and routines our kids are accustomed to. (edited) 3mo

I wonder how accurate this claim is, because I am almost 40, I‘ve hand many nightmares, night terrors, and nocturnal panic attacks (thanks Wil Wheaton for that term) in my life, but I have never had a dream like she describes. Maybe it‘s just me. She would have me believe it is, but I‘m curious about evidence for this.

lil1inblue I'm 45 and have had all the nightmares and terrors you describe. I've had some healing lucid-like dreams about specific people. But also never what she described in the book. But my terrors and nightmares started when I was 7 and are very much trauma related, so I wonder if that has something to do with it. 3mo

Bookwomble The claim of universality is a red flag for me. Not even the actual universal experiences of birth and death are the same for everybody, much less dream experiences. She negates her claim by saying it would be "remarkable if..", not "impossible that...". I wouldn't vex yourself overly much about a crass generalisation. And, I'm bookending @lil1inblue 's virtual hug, if you wish to accept it ?❤️ 3mo

Dreams themselves are semi archetypal- our brain uses information through a lens it feels connected to to process information. It does not make sense some of the time- and we do not always remember our dreams. I read the section just now but not the 3mo

Chrissyreadit chapter so my information is through a somatic developmental lens. She is talking about how women process their sense of safety within themselves. A comprable dream is any one where you felt helpless. the goal of internal work is that the psyche develops the tools, support and information it needs to feel safe and confident. In the Estes lens she suggests that all women experience a dream where they feel helpless or thwarted or harmed- and by age 3mo

Chrissyreadit 25 is roughly the developmental stage from dependence to independence (late adolescence to adulthood). Psychological developmental theory is that we all go through stages of development- Jungian theory has an emphasis on dream work to process it. The reality is we all dream- but we do not all understand or interpret dreams the same way. I would not consider it quite so literally- it is an archetype- rather recognizing that dreams in which you 3mo

Chrissyreadit felt powerless were meant to help you identify and find your strength and use your fear to find safety. Trauma will completely impact dreams. The brain wants us to find paths of safety from literal danger compared to existential danger. Chrissyreadit Her use of jungian psychology and archetypes is what was known and understood- but i personally do not believe in discounting foundations in understanding. Today we use Parts Theory- and those parts have archetypal meaning/identity. We use the stories we tell ourselves to support the decisions we make and are living in real time where false narratives are being accepted as true. I have not read enough of this book to offer an opinion on this work 3mo

Chrissyreadit But the lens she is offering is meaningful because stories and the way we make sense of them are not only meaningful but still used today. Specifically consider how the Bible is used with both literal and figurative meanings and at times weaponized. 3mo

TheBookHippie I think a point to mention here is something the departed Leslie Jordon would say about church”If it wasn‘t for me I just left it under the pew, because someone else must need to hear it. I just took what I needed for me.” In books like this that‘s true too. Use what speaks to you. Leave the rest for someone who needs it. Is she generalising -perhaps but there‘s some really good things in here that have helped countless people. That‘s wonderful. 3mo

I get worried about people just relying on such when they have serious problems such as suicidal thoughts which do necessitate evidenced-based treatment . I think it‘s horrible, repetitive writing and total BS. It‘s about women‘s empowerment, but somehow there is always a man to the rescue in the end and she‘s really stretching that to be “women‘s inner strength.” Yeah, I don‘t think anyone ever thought that before you, lady. 3mo

Not every book is for every person and not every practice is either. Doesn‘t mean it‘s not valid. 3mo

TheBookHippie @GingerAntics update copy probably helps the last third of my book has “proofs” I think it‘s this is one woman‘s theory of how to heal. Is there anything for me, or someone I know. I just leave it at that. Somethings in here have truly helped people and for that I am grateful. I‘m rereading it after decades and some of it I agree with some I think well that‘s not for me and I turn the page 🤣🙃😅. 3mo

I feel like I‘m betraying the home team or something in saying that. I‘m just not buying into her interpretations, because I know those are not the initial intent by any means and she‘s acting like these have always been the true, hidden meaning. 3mo

TheBookHippie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads I believe in a combination of things. Initially books saved my life. Especially as a child it was my only option. So I don‘t discount it in others. Not all therapies work for all people. I agree it is important to find what works for you. I don‘t believe in talk therapy, I do believe in ASMR -for myself. Talk therapy works for some. It‘s all nuance. Anytime anyone says this is the only way- there‘s a problem. 3mo

Don‘t even get me started on the non-diagnosis of “codependent.” Just another way the cult of AA has infiltrated the rest of our lives. I am so interested in narrative therapy, honestly. I‘ve been writing original works since I was 7, so I feel like it‘s right up my alley and would make more sense for me. 3mo

Can my experiences please be taken seriously and not written off? I greatly respect your profession. I think it is vital and underused still today. I just don‘t think one type of therapy is the answer for everyone. Some people do amazing with talk therapy. 3mo

Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics @thebookhippie @lil1inblue just responding with a few thoughts in this thread- this is a book that is written through the lens of Jungian theory- it is not meant to be taken a therapy or applied as therapy. There is foundational value in all of the early theorists- the greatest difference is the why we perceive our live experience the way we do. The reality is that life is hard and culture as well as trauma all play a role- but this 3mo

Chrissyreadit book is a way to understand how stories and narratives share common functions and how we hear and experience stories is impacted by our lives. Just take it for an analysis on commonalities in human conditions and one way to interpret/use and empower ourselves with stories. 3mo

I believe that Somatic work is vital to our body and brain connection- and that if behavior change is needed understanding behavioral strategies that work for you (especially with ADHD) I am a fan of EMDR, and using narrative tools in therapy as well. I could go on for hours because this is my field but in the end my goal with this book is to potentially provide one more resource to 3mo

I don‘t think I would call this “dead and dismembered aspect”of myself back because she lives in me.The summer after I turned 30,I was in a car accident that took me 5+ years to recover from-I still go to PT now. At that time I was single & living in Boston,so I needed to go back to my parents in CT for surgery.I gave up my job,my apartment, my social life.Surgery was successful in rescuing a damaged nerve,but was I left in severe chronic pain.⬇️

kspenmoll ⬆️ I was reduced to infancy. my mom massaged my drop foot nightly while we chatted. My dad spent his afternoons off watching a soap opera, General Hospital,( he was an MD so we laughed alot),when I recovered enough he held my arm while I took baby steps in our driveway.My mom and sister took me to the local pool helped me into my bathing suit so I could walk in the pool. Gifts from this experience: I met a woman who owned a needlepoint store.⬇️ 3mo

kspenmoll ⬆️ she needed someone to spot her so she could go to lunch or take a break. I started working there in exchange for needlepoint canvases & yarn maybe twice a week for a couple of hours.My love for needlepoint started then.Another gift came much later when I could stand long enough to work in my dad‘s office.I had such fun with the staff & saw my dad in his professional capacity which was so special.While in the pool, a met a woman who also had⬇️ (edited) 3mo

kspenmoll ⬆️Back surgery. We became lifelong friends, and I met my husband through her. Another gift: I was able to fly in a plane, lying down on 3 seats to visit my closest brother in Alaska. He my sister-in-law and my niece Lily, who was 6, drove all over Alaska with me lying down in the back of their Subaru. Lily & I remain close today because of those 6 weeks together. During all this time, I was able to reflect, create, laugh, love, & ⬇️ 3mo

I was in a severely abusive relationship, which almost killed me (literally). Not only was this physically abusive, but it was also emotional (the lasting effects have lingered). I used to dance, my whole life, since childhood, (tap, jazz, flocorico, ballet, cheer) I danced, used to dance in our relationship, around the house, wiggle here, wiggle there, sing, play... He frequently told me I was too ugly, fat, and unworthy of enjoying my body ⬇️

ElizaMarie I slowly stopped at the point of quitting. Now, I am hesitant to dance. My husband is amazing, loving, and healing. He is playful, and I am safe. My head sometimes forgets this.

TheBookHippie @ElizaMarie SAME. It‘s a daily battle sometimes. Pockets of joy and routine work for me but mostly writing works. Also Mr BookHippie leaves me hand written notes, it helps a bunch. I think sometimes seeing it written out helps your brain. Sending you so much love. 3mo

My “La Loba's“ place would be a hammock on the beach. I love the sun, so during the day, I read out by the hammock, lightly swaying in the breeze (add a stand/table for drinks and snacks). At night, sleeping outside under the stars, hearing the waves. PERFECTION!

ElizaMarie I am sure I have a ton more that I don't really consider traditions. Maybe I am thinking of rituals. One I would love to try but haven't - I would like to work more on spiritual traditions revolving around the seasons. I scream out/sing into the moonlight on full moons (not consistently). I would like to have some sort of water tradition too. I love the ocean, I used to crave it at certain parts of the year, sun bathe, lay in water, but ⬇️ 3mo

ElizaMarie Since COVID and moving to VT, I haven't been near the beaches. I would like to work on bringing that into my life.

I used to make up jingles about whatever I was doing and I was always listening to music and singing.At some point in my 20s I was raped and shortly afterwards I ended up in an abusive relationship that lasted many years.I can't really remember anything that happened for some time after the relationship ended, there is a blank space, I remember things that happened to me, but as if someone had told me a story, not as if I had actually lived them⬇️

nanuska_153 Then I remember a time when I was reconstructing myself, trying to act the way I used to be, putting back the pieces together. But during this time there was silence, I wasn't singing or listening to music, not like I usually did as if there was a constant soundtrack to my life. I managed to get back the soundtrack of my life and the singing, but the ability to make jingles I never got back. ⬇️ 3mo

nanuska_153 I miss being the kind of person that can just make a tune about cheese just because it's so tasty. The first time I heard my daughter making up a stupid song while we were playing I got so emotional I had to leave the room so she wouldn't get scared. I love her jingles so much ❤️ This chapter was very interesting to me, because I don't know if I reconstructed myself through singing, but I definitely had to reconstruct myself in order to sing. 3mo

That carefree spirit to sing at a whim, giggle, and have a great time is so near and dear to me as well. I used to be very “silly“ (what it was labeled as), but men have chastized me for these personality quirks as well. It became unsafe. Thatbooknerd I‘ve been there too. Happened a long time ago but somehow it doesn‘t feel like it was. I also had abuses in my childhood and adolescence at home…I ended up in two abusive relationships but got out of them. Sending love and hugs. 3mo
