Aliette de Bodard is one of those authors I really, really want to love, but I‘ve never clicked with her longer work. (I‘ve enjoyed some of her short fiction.) Going by this book‘s opening, I think maybe her prose is precise in a way that shuts me out of the story‘s emotional side. Hopefully the rest of the thing‘ll win me over and change my mind.

Also, you‘ll appreciate why I had to buy and immediately assemble this diorama kit. #audiocrafting

Fallen angels in a decaying, post war Paris, doing whatever they can to survive and protect their own.
It's a thrilling read and I enjoyed it very much. The imagery is beautiful and the characters are wonderfully written.

This is my new favorite book, a 10/10, and my new favorite author
I highly recommend this book, and the rest of The Dominion of the Fallen trilogy.

I love this series and I thoroughly enjoyed my reread of Shattered Wings. The characters are all bruised, full of regrets and doubt and sharp edges to cut one another on. The atmosphere is dark and brooding; the antagonists exactly my flavour of ruthless; Asmodeus defined by his relentlessness but given to odd bouts of whimsical mercy, of sorts. Expect magic, betrayal, unbreakable bonds and pointed commentary on inherited sins. Excellent.

Is Asmodeus a villain or a well-dressed man with no scruples about doing what it takes to protect his House? Is there a difference? I adore Aliette de Bodard‘s Dominion of the Fallen for its scope, diversity and fearlessness. Except when it comes to Asmodeus. Everyone is afraid of him, and so they should be.

“It is almost pleasant, at first, to be Falling.” On to book two of my #24in48 #readathon, which also happens to have the most intriguing first line of my stack.

Great premise but I gave it 2 hours & made it through 60 pages. I was bored & it was not holding my attention. Back to the #library for it! Not sure what happened to my pic but this kind of suits my feelings about the book.

So I want to start with saying the world building in this book is great. Aliette de Bodard has created a Paris that is both terrifying & alluring. She's populated it with Fallen angels who retain much of the former power but little of their memory. Add in Houses vying for supremacy in the aftermath of a war between them. Throw in an outsider with problems of his own and you have a story that is a whole lot of fun. I really enjoyed this book.

This one has been in the TBR pile for some time and I've decided now is the time to dive in. It's really well reviewed and I'm eager to see if it lives up to the hype.

Finished this one during my evening walk. I liked the world building and the characters, but for some reason I got REALLY bored at a few points in the story. I was going back and forth between listening and reading, and I don't think I would've finished it if I was only doing one or the other. I have read others by this author that I loved, though, so I'll be trying more!

The House of Shattered Wings is probably the worst book I have read in some time. The story is slow it was like trudging through mud. The story follows a fallen angel meeting an immortal in the war ruined city of Paris. The House they find themselves tied to is affected by a curse which they unwittingly unleash. The characters are flat & wallowing in self pity it is hard to care about any of them which means you care less about the story

I loved this book. It's set in apocalyptic Paris in an alternative universe where WW1 was a war between Magicians. People now either live in the streets or in Houses protected by fallen angels.

I cannot wait to read these three, especially the house of shattered wings. That title is fantastic!

Kind of how I feel about this book! Bit of action then....yawn....ooh what is this?......damn it lots of description and backstory.....yawn. So many mixed feelings but I will finish The House of Shattered Wings!!!!

Struggling with this book a bit...nothing is happening. It is in need of a bit of pace and less description of feelings and flashbacks. This book is at risk of joining the DNF pile 😕

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Just finished The House of Shattered Wings by Aliette de Bodard. Gorgeously and smartly written with intriguing world-building. Definitely worth a read for #fantasy fans, especially those looking for fresh takes on the tired "colonialism but with white victims" trope. My only wish is that I could've engaged deeper with more than one character. But my investment in Philippe carried me through the whole book. #angels #diversereads

Great world building, but also contains repetitive description, sparse tension, and a dissatisfying conclusion. Not for me.

I really struggled to finish this one. Such potential but the writing just wasn't there to back it up, a meandering plot, repetitive vocabulary and absolutely riddled with misused words and idioms. I'm surprised so many errors made it past the editor.

It's a classic autumn day: cool, overcast & threatening rain. Perfect weather to curl up & read a book!

After 2 years abroad the vast choices of Barnes and Noble is overwhelming but so much better that trying to find new things browsing online. All hail brink and mortar bookstores!

Let's give this a B+. I enjoyed it, but here were my main two issues: 1) It didn't seem like it would be a terrible thing if Silverspires or any of the houses were destroyed. They felt like sororities bickering amongst themselves while everyone else died in the streets. I was in a sorority so I can say that. 2) There was a lot of world building we were just sort of supposed to pick up on that wasn't clear at all...angel essence?

It was a perfect day for reading....but I had promised several people book bracelets. Not a bad way to spend the day but geesh it takes a long time.

A murder mystery set amongst the magic-decayed ruins of Paris, this is also a story of political intrigue within the Houses of an (un)heavenly mafia of fallen angels, and an immortal outsider (who is fallen himself). ... Also, there are dragons (❤️ me some dragons!) 8/10
