This is the first book in the Detective Inspector Gereon Rath mystery series. I‘ve wanted to read this series ever since I watched the first two seasons of the TV series.

Berlin 1929: A man is found dead in a car in the canal. Rath and his companion in Vice is seeking out illegal photo shoots and bars. Then several Russians turn up dead too.

Along with the murder mysteries, there‘s a lot about the Roaring 20s, tension between different groups

AnneCecilie like the Communists, Socialists and the raising Nazis and these groups connection with the police. 3y

Finishing Hood Feminism #SheSaid and continue The Warmth of Other Sun #OtherSuns

I want to finish Babylon Berlin. I have borrowed two books from the library that can only be borrowed for 14 days without any extensions, so I need to get to those, Family Lexicon and 304 days. I also hope to start Diary of a Young Naturalist since I can‘t extend it any longer.

Cinfhen I miss those library deadline days!! Good luck 🍀 3y

I am on the letter K for my challenge and chose these two books. Unfortunately I bailed on the tagged book, just wasn't for me. Sadly Knife Edge was actually good, but for some reason they printed double or triple the same page quite often. And also sometimes didn't finish a chapter. So if you get Knife Edge check it out before you buy it!

An interesting detective story set in Berlin in the 1920‘s during the days of the Weimar Republic. An ambitious but morally compromised young detective seeks to solve a series of murders, which he finds to be linked to a plot involving White Russian and Communists groups, Nazi‘s and corrupt cops who are all searching for a train full of Russian gold.

AlaMich I enjoyed this one too. I did have to do a bit of research here and there to understand the references to political parties etc. 5y
JazzFeathers I really liked the mystery. I found the historical setting and bit faulty. 5y

A mystery in Berlin after wwi and before wwii. Drugs, clubs, emerging fascists. Gritty. It reads like it was translated (which it was) which adds to the tone.

KCofKaysville Good review. I like the subject but expected more. Berlin is super interesting at that time. 4y

1700 books on their way to a bookstore, libraries, and a nursing home. It is always sad to part with books, but I fell back into my old habit of keeping every book I read, and that‘s not sustainable when you read 600+ books a year. 😂

This is the first big culling I‘ve done since I moved in five years ago. I hope these lovely books make new friends. (Also, I carried 1700 books downstairs yesterday - my body is REALLY mad at me now. 😝)

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Holy Cow! I bet your body is mad at you, but I bet your floors and walls thank you! Here‘s to new homes for old friends! 🥂 6y
callielafleur How do you choose which books go to which place? I'd love to donate to a nursing home, I just don't know what kinds of books to send along. 6y

Liberty @callielafleur I mostly send adult mystery, romance, contemporary fiction, and historical fiction. 6y
Liberty @Soubhiville I got rid of all the books I still hadn‘t read that I moved here with five years ago, all the galleys I had already read, half the finished books I had read and kept, and a lot of unsolicited galleys I was never going to read. 6y

Back home, but still a week to go of holidays!! Aka gonna be reading a lot over the next few days!
My friend recommended Babylon Berlin the TV show , but I always like to read the book first so I had to buy this. Shame about the TV tie-in cover! It's a fun read so far. Still in the beginning though where we are getting to know the characters!

Crime/detective novel is set in late 20s Berlin. It‘s a solid page turner with good/bad cops, romance, glimpses into criminal underground life/activities, and with background in increasingly stronger political movements (communism, nazism). Recommended to all who needs a little more than just whodunit.

In the picture: Nürnberger Strasse, street where is the home of the main hero - Gereon Rath.

#backpackEurope #Germany ??

sisilia A friend just recommended this to me. Worth the binge reading? 6y
Simona @sisilia It is a page turner, but at the same time story have a few very slow moments and it‘s quite complicated to understand - if you aren‘t familiar with European history. I would recommend it, but not for binge reading ... 6y

For landmark approval: Gereon, main character is in love with a girl and he drives her to the work on the longer route through city, so he can be with her for a longer time♥️

The reference points to different locations and interactions of the MC with locals just gives the story a nice background. Weaved into the plot is the time with its political unrest of the Weimar Republic and the starting rise of the nazi party. All of this sets the stage for a police detective to find several murderers and unravel a complicated case. The MC is stubborn and proud and doesn‘t much hide his ambitions.

Bookmarkie This tv series was pretty well done, too. 6y

1. Babylon Berlin. I tried!
2. I usually read over a meal or in bed so it's all or nothing. I do always have at least a glass of water nearby.
3. So many good ones... A perpetual favorite is "Carrington, Letters and Extracts from her Diaries." My hc is falling apart from rereads.
4. Whoever wants to play.

A mystery set in the Jazz Age with Louise Brooks on the cover. What could go wrong? I had high hopes for this one, but it moved too slowly for my taste. I'm in no big hurry to see the Netflix series now.

JazzFeathers I read it last year and found the mystery very good, but the historical setting not as accurate as l hoped. Didn't see the TV series yet, but it looks very good 7y

#TBRtemptation post 6! This translated book is the first in the Gereon Rath series. Berlin, 1929. Det. Insp. Rath accidentally kills a man and is transferred to Berlin's Vice Squad befriending new boss, Chief Insp. Wolter. During enforcement of a ban on May Day protests, many people are killed or injured, turning into a pr nightmare for the police. When an unidentifiable body is pulled out of the canal, things change. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Maria514626 This sounds decadent and lovely! 7y
CherryPie NPR referred to the TV show as "Cabaret on cocaine" Based on the cover, I expected a bio on Louise Brooks in Germany. A Pabst tell-all. ? 7y

Mehso-so

As a mystery, this novel is very enjoyable. There's a twist half way through that l didn't see coming and it was fantastic.

As an historical novel, it is extremely frustrating. This is supposed to be set in Berlin in 1929, but there is no sense of history and hardly any accuracy. Such a shame...
