This SF novel is the 2017 Newbery medal winner & NY Times Best Seller that I would use for IR or LC. The people of the Protectorate live in fear of the evil witch who haunts the forest. She will leave them alone, but they must bring her a newborn baby every year, or so they think. When Xan, a good witch, rescues baby Luna, she accidentally feeds her moonlight instead of starlight which fills her with magical powers.

WendyV Multiple storylines come together in a dramatic climax espousing the power of love and nonviolence. 🧙🏼‍♀️🌗 #UCFLAE3414SP18

This link will take you to a teachers pay teachers account that you can find comprehension and critical thinking questions, vocabulary, writing, and assessments that could be used with this book. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Girl-Who-Drank-the-Moon-Comprehe...
7y
WendyV Using the link above with the book is a great way to guide information processing, visualization, and manipulation (UDL 3.3). I think students should build a story map with this book to follow the different settings. Teaching students to use this graphic organizer (EL 7) can help them following along easier. 7y
NanaBurf Love the story map idea 7y

What‘s Great About Florida? Is a NF for IR that explains why Florida is one of the world‘s top places to visit and live! Florida is known for its year-round warm weather and theme parks, but people come to the state for its nature and history too. This book covers the top ten things that make Florida great! 🍊🌴🌊🏄🏽‍♂️🚀🐊☀️ #UCFLAE3414SP18

WendyV What would motivate students more than a real life experience field trip to some of the places mentioned that make Florida great? (UDL 7.2) Students could enjoy learning about Florida‘s history with a trip to Saint Augustine or they could explore the past, present, and future of the US space program by visiting Kennedy Space Center. These field trips couldn‘t be more hands on when learning about what makes Florida great. (EL 46) 7y
WendyV Author Mary Meinking has written over 40 children‘s book, many of which are amazing NF books that I would love to add to my classroom library. Check out her website that lists her books so you can see why you should have her books in your library too! http://www.marymeinking.com/site/1e01584db2664d2fa43c4dbe76c24339/default? (edited) 7y
Fiona_i This is a book I would want to use in my classroom. It is important students learn about the state they live in. 7y
NanaBurf Great idea to incorporate this book prior to a field trip. 7y
SadiqaH I like the web site and this book can be easily coordinated with social studies lessons. 7y

Puerto Rico | Patricia K. Kummer, Press Staff Capstone

Puerto Rico is a NF filled with interesting facts about the island that I would use for PR. Did you know that Puerto Rico is smaller than all of the U.S. states except Rhode Island & Delaware or that it‘s unofficial symbol is a tree frog called the coquí? Include this book in your classroom for everyone to learn more about the history and culture of Puerto Rico ??! #UCFLAE3414SP18

WendyV It‘s important to include other cultures in your curriculum, especially those of any ESL students (EL 24). If I had students from PR I would use this book to teach a lesson on the US territory and hope to optimize students engagement by learning more about where other classmates are from (UDL 7.2). 7y
WendyV I found a suggested lesson to teach students after hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. https://www.google.com/amp/s/mobile.nytimes.com/2017/10/04/learning/lesson-plans...

LisaMart @WendyV This would be a great resource for individual research when studying social studies concepts! 7y

NanaBurf Kids need to know they are part of the USA even if not a state. Great book to help children that have refugees from the hurricane in their classes to understand their culture 7y
Kendallc This could be used in so many ways! Geography, lesson on countries, culture, the possibilities are endless!! 7y
SadiqaH I agree with you that it is very important to add books about different countries and cultures . It helps students to understand diversity very well 7y

Shifty Business | Greg Trine
post image
Pickpick

The Adventures of Jo Schmo Shifty Business is SF novel #3 of 4 by Greg Trine that I would use for IR. Jo Schmo is a 4th grade superhero who doesn‘t know a crime wave is about to hit her city. She‘s too busy learning new superhero skills, like shape-shifting. Will she defeat the villainous Numb Skull before the crime wave builds into a full-on crime tsunami? Check out this book to find out! #UCFLAE3414SP18

WendyV I would include this book in my classroom library for students to have access to choosing it for IR. It‘s a funny, out there book that even the kids who don‘t enjoy reading won‘t be able to put down. (UDL 7.1) If my students were assigned an IR book, I would have students read 2-3 chapters a week as homework (EL 38) 7y
WendyV I found a scholastic blog on empowering students through IR that I thought fit in perfectly.

NanaBurf Love the super hero is female!! 7y

Pablo Picasso | Patricia A. MacDonald
post image
Pickpick

This is a great B novel that could be used for PR on an artist study involving Pablo Picasso. This book goes into extreme detail about Picasso‘s life, his art, & so much more! This book displays his art work and pictures of Picasso throughout his years. The back adds a timeline for his life including major events as well as a glossary with key terms the book uses. It was an awesome book to read and now I‘m a Picasso expert! 🎨 👨🏻‍🎨🇪🇸

WendyV If I implemented a partner artist study assignment, I would provide each group with a goal setting worksheet to help students stay organized (UDL 6.1). By having multiple biographies of different artists for students to study about, I would be using EL 28. Here‘s a bunch of different Pablo Picasso lesson plans that can be used in your classroom. https://www.incredibleart.org/files/picasso.htm #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y

This HF novel I would use for a LC is a story about Ada living in 1939 during WWII who is forbidden to leave the house. To escape the war, Ada and her brother leave London to the countryside without their mothers knowledge where they stay with a woman Susan. Ada struggles with a twisted club foot as well as many thing. During her journey she learns a lot even teaching herself how to walk. #UCFLAE3414SP18

WendyV It‘s an advanced book I would use with upper grade level students for an LC which would allow for fostering collaboration and community (UDL 8.3). I would encourage students to take notes while reading this book while creating timelines and T-lists as a reading strategy (EL 9). Check out the book trailer! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=stbW0MjYeEI 7y
WendyV This book received the 2016 Newbery honor award, 2016 Schneider Family Book award, and is a New York Times Best Seller. 7y
SadiqaH This book is a great choice and I will definitely read this book . 7y
NanaBurf Excellent book should be required reading. 7y
DrSpalding Another wonderful book to enhance social studies curriculum. I have read adult versions regarding the London Blitz. My mother lived through this and had to attend school, wearing a little red gas mask. Scary times. Thanks for sharing the book trailer. 7y

This RF book i would use for RA is about Carrie and Dan who experience a hurricane hitting their town. The news told everyone to evacuate, but when Carrie and Dans family decide to stay, they find themselves on top of the roof after their house floods. This book includes numerous facts about hurricanes, maps, timelines, and key words to know. Any student would really enjoy this story, especially if they have ever experienced a hurricane too!

WendyV Using this book in a classroom would be a great strategy to activate students background knowledge on hurricanes, UDL 3.1, and EL 4 linking a lesson on hurricanes to students prior knowledge. I found a list of lesson plans on hurricanes for K-5 from the NEA website. http://www.nea.org/tools/lessons/hurricane-season-grades-k-5.html #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y
JordanL Awesome book for Floridians again, just to give basic knowledge about a hurricane and their power. This book is a must have for Florida classrooms as many students might not have had a hurricane that they remember in their life time. 7y
WendyV I totally agree @JordanL I read it to my 4 year old who just went through hurricane Irma. He was fascinated as I read this story and kept recalling what we went through last year. 7y
DrSpalding You can‘t do much better than the National Education Association website. Excellent alignment and knowing that children need to know about this topic, a wise choice for reading. 7y

This hilarious TL picture book is a twist on a classic but from the view point of the giant. He tells his side of the story and how jack came to steal his stuff. This would be great for an RA or S in the classroom. If you haven‘t read this, check out a n RA and see why you should get it! 🌱👦🏼💰 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eSvX6CDgJtQ

WendyV I would use UDL 3.2 to highlight patterns this book and the traditional version told by jack have for students to see the relationship between the books. Using EL 30 would benefit students by using diagrams or drawings to see the relationship between the books. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y

The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate
post image
Pickpick

This MF novel is a Newbery winner that could be use for LC, IR, or SR. I ❤️ this book! Ivan, a gorilla, lives as an attraction in a mall off I95 with a few of his animal friends. This story is told by the art-loving Ivan in what feels like a diary. You go through a lot with Ivan in this book. From joy & happiness, to a death, to a new home, I couldn‘t put it down! 🎨🦍🐘🐶#UCFLAE3414SP18

WendyV I would love to use this book in my classroom for a SR. It would be an easy transition to use after lunch by reading a couple quick chapters and generating a class discussion. I found this amazing teaching guide (created by the author herself, Katherine Applegate). It includes discussion questions, extension activities, and info on the real Ivan. https://media.btsb.com/TitleLessonPlans/597.pdf 7y
WendyV By reading this book aloud, I would use UDL 1.3 by offering an alternative way for my students to receive the book. I‘d also use EL strategy 16 by integrating speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities with this book. 7y
Jeffersleighann This made me want to check out this book. I don‘t do well with animals in books (it makes me sad) so I chose not to do it for the choice lit circle. 7y

Olive's Ocean | Kevin Henkes
post image
Pickpick

Olive‘s Ocean by Kevin Henkes is a Newbery Honor RF novel that I would use for LC or IR. This is a coming-of-age story about Martha. She learns of a girl Olive who she shares a lot in common with, but will sadly never meet her as she passed away. Martha spends her summers at her grandmas who lives on the Atlantic Ocean where she continues to think about Olive & writes a story about her. This book was very enjoyable to read with a touching ending.

WendyV If you want to know why the book is called Olives Ocean, you‘ll have to read it to see! #UCFLAE3414SP18. I found a short interesting article on the advantages of sustained silent reading. I think this book would fit in perfectly for SSR.
http://education.seattlepi.com/advantages-sustained-silent-reading-1638.html
7y
WendyV If I was going to have my students read this book, I would ask them to read it at home on their own time or during class when it‘s quiet reading time. I would want to use UDL strategy 7.3 to minimize any treats and distractions so students can focus on their reading. I would use EL 6 to monitor their comprehension of the book to make sure students are understanding the story as they read along. 7y
SadiqaH I like the book . The link you provided gives great information about SSR. 7y
Jeffersleighann This book sounds awesome! I would love to add this to my classroom library. This would also be good for students who have had friends pass away. When I was in 2nd grade we had two students in my grade pass away in the same year. 7y
DrSpalding Well said. This is a true coming of age story. As mentioned in class I like that you can read his picture books and then transition into his quality chapter books. 7y

The Great Fairy Tale Disaster by David Conway is a TL PB that I would use for a RA and then would LOVE to use for RT! This hilarious book incorporates all the classic fairy tale story‘s to tell a tale of the infamous big bad wolf who no longer wants to blow down houses. He takes off on a journey hopping through different stories to find the perfect fit for himself. Will he find one? You‘ll have to read it to see for yourself! #UCFLAE3414SP18

WendyV Before using this book for RT, I would introduce it to my students by showing them this video. It‘s a RA of the story told by Erin, who does a really great job using her story telling voice to engage children. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hMA1aIsNE7U 7y
WendyV By showing students the YouTube video of the RA I would be using UDL 2.5 by illustrating the book through multiple media. After students have been introduced to the book, I would create a script for the RT. Having students work together to preform, I am using EL strategy 2 by promoting small group cooperation. 7y
Hervela.L I love reading your post, the books are unfamiliar to me. So it sparks my interest and they encourage me to read the books for my future students. I love your UDL & EL strategy, they align so well. I love the YouTube video so much, it's very engaging. 7y

The Way I Feel | Janan Cain
post image
Pickpick

The Way I Feel, by Janan Cain, is a P/RF PB that I would love to use in my class for RA. The authors intent for this book is to give children the language for their emotions. It covers all the feelings (more than any Disney Pixar movie ) for kids to be better equipped to understand & express their feelings. I really enjoyed reading this book with my children & having them act out each emotion as we discussed it!
😁😩😡🤢🤪😣 #UCFLAE3414SP18

WendyV I found this really informative article from Michigan State University on helping children identify and express their emotions I thought I‘d share. http://msue.anr.msu.edu/news/help_young_children_identify_and_express_emotions
I also wanted to include a lesson plan using this book. https://heartmindonline.org/resources/lesson-plan-the-way-i-feel This includes a great way to initiate a class discussion on students prior experience with emotions.
7y
WendyV It‘s important for students to discuss this topic in whatever way is most comfortable to them. I would use UDL 5.2 by allowing many ways for my students to express themselves. They could discuss with peers or the class, write in their personal journal, draw a picture to represent their feelings, or whatever else I would feel is appropriate. I would use EL 14 & hand/facial gestures to help students understand better. 7y
Hervela.L Wow I love this whole entire post. I love the way you are giving the students a choice. Your UDL &EL is so on point. 7y

morganhillman This book sounds awesome and a great way to show children how to express themselves in any situation. I loved how you said you made your kids act out each emotion because that allows them to get really engaged and excited for the reading, while also getting to learn and practice some new and old emotions! 7y
SadiqaH Seems interesting! The way you described the book I will definitely read this book, 7y
Jeffersleighann I am really interested in this book and would love to buy this for my future classroom! It is so important that students have resources to help them understand how they‘re feeling especially at a young age! 7y
kylamarie5 I‘ve never heard of this book! I would love to have it for my classroom library. I love that it shows/expresses emotions in pictures so kids can relate to it 7y
BriannaR This book seems like a cool book to read when the kids are having a bad day. It seems like it'll make them feel better; good choice. 7y
DrSpalding Technically this picture book is not nonfiction. Think about what nonfiction entails and I think you will come up with a different genre. Books that explore feelings are important in the primary grades. Excellent choice. 7y
WendyV @DrSpalding thanks for reminding me to pay attention closely to the genres! I was on a roll with NF books, hopefully my edit is more accurate now! 📚🤔 7y
Fiona_i This is a good book to read when your students might be having an off day. It's a good way for them to think about their emotions and get back on track. 7y

Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas is a humorous F PB & is perfect for a lower grade level RA. This cute book tell the story of Ed, Ned, Ted...and Bob who are dust bunnies that LOVE rhyming! The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf by Mark Teague is a picture book that I would use for RA, S or RT. This story tells the traditional tale of the three little pigs who find themselves in trouble with the somewhat bad wolf—who is really just hungry and frustrated that the pizza parlor will not serve him. This is a really cute twist on a classic and I‘m happy to have it in my class library. #UCFLAE3414SP18 🐷🐷🐷 🍕❤️🐺

WendyV I think this book would be fun for students to read and then act out in the classroom. I found a great article on 8 steps to have a successful classroom readers theater. https://www.weareteachers.com/8-steps-to-successful-classroom-readers-theater-2/ 7y
WendyV I would use UDL strategy 9.1 by promoting my expectations and beliefs of my students for their motivation to read and act out the story is increased. Since there is only 4 characters in this story, I would break my class into groups of 4 to work together (UDL 8.3) and EL 2. Students can work together to prepare for their performance. 7y
BriannaR This is a classic 😍😍. I loved this story growing up. I hope that in the future, it never looses its importance in childhood. 7y

The Man Who Walked Between The Towers, by Mordicai Gerstein, is a HF that won the 2004 Caldecott medal that I would use in a RA, S, IR, SR, or PR. This book tells the story of a young French aerialist, Philippe Petit, who was determined to walk a cable wire between the twin towers. The ending of this story has an unpredictable ending that you must read to find out! #UCFLAE3414SP18

WendyV I think this book would be great for a social studies assignment since it is based off of a real event that happened in 1974! I found this amazing lesson plan for higher elementary grade level students to gain an understanding and appreciation of the Twin Towers which uses this book! https://betterlesson.com/lesson/499778/the-man-who-walked-between-the-towers 7y
WendyV I think using UDL strategy 3.1 is important when talking about the towers with students. It‘s helpful to activate what prior knowledge students have and to supply them with what background knowledge they need. I would also use EL strategy 9 with my students so they can take good notes on the topic and have a timeline of important events dealing with the towers. 7y

Waiting, by Kevin Henkes, is a Caldecott honor and Geisel honor picture book I would use for RA, S, or AS. This book tells a story of 5 toys sitting on a window sill waiting for different things that bring them happiness. Henkes beautifully illustrates what it‘s like every day to be a toy on a window sill looking out and getting new visitors. It‘s a cute quick story to share with your class! #UCFLAE3414SP18

The Fish with the Deep-Sea Smile by Margaret Wise Brown, is a P picture book great for RA, IR, or AS. I just picked it up for $5! This book was 1 of 5 M.W.B books that Kohl‘s is featuring. We Are Growing! By Laurie Keller, is a MF picture book, great for RA, IR, PT, & S, and is the 2017 recipient of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. WendyV I would use UDL 3.1 with this by activating students prior knowledge on plant growth. Also, since this book is great for beginner readers, I would use EL strategy 38 and have the student take a copy of this book home to practice short reading. 7y
Hervela.L I had to stop and read your post because I love mo willems so far! After reading this post I will definitely be reading this book I enjoyed the post a great deal. This book seem so interesting and is a part of a subject area that's a lot of students don't like. I believe this book will allow students from a young age to begin a curiosity about science. WendyV I really like Mo Willems too. His elephant & piggies books are really cute. I really want to get the 4 book series for my classroom library. 7y
sboynt I had to read this book after your Book Boost, it sounded so cute! The lesson seems perfect to correlate to the book! And the UDL and EL strategies seem like they will work perfectly for the learners. 7y
WendyV Thanks @sboynt I‘m glad you were interested in this book too! 7y
DrSpalding Your book boost! Another fine post by you @WendyV ❤️📚 7y

They All Saw a Cat | Brendan Wenzel

Pickpick

They All Saw a Cat by Brendan Wenzel, is a F picture book that is great for IR, PR, RA, & S and is a 2017 Caldecott winner! This book tells the story of a cat that walks through the world being viewed by many outsiders who all have a unique perception of what the cat looks like. This book can be used in the classroom to teach students that we can all see the same thing, but perceive it differently.

WendyV Http://www.strudyforcommonthings.com/2016/08/they-all-saw-a-cat-animal-eyesight-activity/ I found this great article that is an extension of how to use this book in the classroom. Students can use any smart device, take a picture, and then change the settings to show how the same image can be perceived differently (UDL 4.2). 7y
WendyV I would use EL strategy 30 with this book to help students identify concepts and see relationships through drawings or diagrams of how the same image can be perceived differently. (They All Saw a Cat read aloud)

DrSpalding I could not get your first link to work. Will you edit? My student, Elif performed this as her storytelling. It‘s such a beautiful book and fairly easy to tell. 7y

DrSpalding Make QR codes of the read aloud and place them in the front cover of your books to support your younger readers. 7y
WendyV @DrSpalding wow that is a great idea! I‘m so happy you taught us how easy QR codes are to make & how beneficial they can be. (Link should work now) (edited) 7y
DrSpalding It still isn‘t working for me however it could be my device. 7y
AshleyR This sounds like a cute book! 7y
