Olive's Ocean | Kevin Henkes

"Olive Barstow was dead. She'd been hit by a car on Monroe Street while riding her bicycle weeks ago. That was about all Martha knew." Martha Boyle and Olive Barstow could have been friends. But they weren't -- and now all that is left are eerie connections between two girls who were in the same grade at school and who both kept the same secret without knowing it. Now Martha can't stop thinking about Olive. A family summer on Cape Cod should help banish those thoughts; instead, they seep in everywhere. And this year Martha's routine at her beloved grandmother's beachside house is complicated by the Manning boys. Jimmy, Tate, Todd, Luke, and Leo. But especially Jimmy. What if, what if, what if, what if? The world can change in a minute.

Pickpick

Olive‘s Ocean by Kevin Henkes is a Newbery Honor RF novel that I would use for LC or IR. This is a coming-of-age story about Martha. She learns of a girl Olive who she shares a lot in common with, but will sadly never meet her as she passed away. Martha spends her summers at her grandmas who lives on the Atlantic Ocean where she continues to think about Olive & writes a story about her. This book was very enjoyable to read with a touching ending.

WendyV If you want to know why the book is called Olives Ocean, you‘ll have to read it to see! #UCFLAE3414SP18. I found a short interesting article on the advantages of sustained silent reading. I think this book would fit in perfectly for SSR.

WendyV If I was going to have my students read this book, I would ask them to read it at home on their own time or during class when it‘s quiet reading time. I would want to use UDL strategy 7.3 to minimize any treats and distractions so students can focus on their reading. I would use EL 6 to monitor their comprehension of the book to make sure students are understanding the story as they read along. 7y
SadiqaH I like the book . The link you provided gives great information about SSR. 7y
Jeffersleighann This book sounds awesome! I would love to add this to my classroom library. This would also be good for students who have had friends pass away. When I was in 2nd grade we had two students in my grade pass away in the same year. 7y
DrSpalding Well said. This is a true coming of age story. As mentioned in class I like that you can read his picture books and then transition into his quality chapter books. 7y

Read this in the early hours here in SAN Fran. Battered copy from a free box somewhere. Picked it up because I‘ve always loved his picture books and didn‘t realise he wrote novels. Excellent writing. Loved as much as his picture books. Would be great for middle school kids ??? @MrsMalaprop

Martha and Olive could‘ve been friends, but they weren't. Weeks after a tragic accident, all that is left are eerie connections between the girls, who both kept the same secret without knowing it.

Now, even while on vacation at the ocean, Martha can't stop thinking about Olive. Things only get more complicated when Martha begins to like Jimmy, a boy she used to despise. What is going on? Can life for Martha be the same ever again?
