The Night Watchman | Louise Erdrich

Pickpick

It‘s been a few years since I last read anything of Erdrich‘s, but she‘s an author that I always keep an eye out for! This year I am the closest I have been in a while to reading a book from each state, but I still needed #NorthDakota, so I started listening to this one! The author performs though initially I wished for a cast list since a variety of the community emerges here in this historical novel based in part on Erdrich‘s own grandfather.

Jessica and the Earthquake | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

Usually the heaviest sleeper in the house, Jessica is the only one to stir when the house rumbles around her. In the morning, they learn this is the first #SweetValleyEarthquake since 1972! Liz wants to write about it for The Sixers, but Jess is the only one who seems to have experienced it. As usual, she starts exaggerating & soon has talked herself into predicting the next quake! Lila wants to humiliate her, so she throws a party, tees are made!

#VacationReading—the book I read (mostly on the plane)& the book I bought while in Key West! My husband and friends were nice enough to make the trek to both bookstores & I couldn‘t resist a signed book(& tote)! As for my November #BOTM pick, this found family fantasy made me feel nostalgic, would be great to read out loud to a younger reader & could‘ve used a map! I appreciated the thorough ending that tied up literally everything! Strong debut!

A Christmas Without Elizabeth | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

This 6th #SweetValleyChristmas is my favorite! In an It‘s A Wonderful Life-esque twist, Elizabeth gets a taste of a Sweet Valley without her, after she wants to disappear after giving away the Christmas party fund to a family at the homeless shelter, her guardian angel, Laura, shows her— Sarah Thomas & Denny Jacobsen are both dead, the Wakefield family‘s in shambles (divorce, tattoos— the Unicorns are Sharks) & life without her just isn‘t Sweet!

Set in 1980 Birmingham, this mystery comes from two perspectives trying to solve a disturbing string of murders— an investigation by 14-year-old Ava, involved since a discovery during her own pursuits of her version of a Body Farm on the local roadkill, & the more official one by the police. Well-performed, I definitely found myself listening at every chance & loved that the ending interview confirms that this isn‘t the last we‘ll see of Ava!

While Elizabeth & her friends look for seashells, Denny Jacobsen & his brother surf. But when a big wave knocks Denny out, Liz doesn‘t hesitate to dive in & save him! Afterwards, Denny starts worshipping her which Liz finds annoying—especially since it incurs Janet‘s wrath since she has a huge crush on Denny. And so the scheming begins for how Janet can save Denny‘s life instead. This one is genuinely hilarious & just plain fun from start to end!

JenlovesJT47 I love this one and also love the tie in with A Christmas Without Elizabeth! 7d

This #YAThriller hooked me with its alternating perspectives from identical twins, Saffron & Georgia. Though not alike—& barely even friends after Saffron‘s posting embarrassing videos online. But they continue to play Sole Survivor with the same group of seven others. When Saffron speculates which of their group archetypes would win the game in real life, a rogue AI grants her wish in this oddly deadly mashup of Willy Wonka & The Breakfast Club.

Lila's Music Video | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

When the Unicorn Club visits Lila, she enthusiastically shows them all the steps to Melody Powers‘ latest video. Rock TV holds a school contest & the Unicorns organize a band for the grand prize of (another!) VCR for the school. Lila demands to be the lead singer but other than dance moves, she can‘t sing it… so she forces nerdy Johanna Porter to sing while Lila lip syncs. Surprisingly, Lila raises Johanna‘s confidence & gives her a makeover!

I‘m not the target audience, as I‘m about as far from having a green thumb as possible (I manage to kill even the hardiest ones!) & despite my deep love for #MurderSheWrote (referenced within the book!), #CozyMysteries aren‘t my go-to. Jessica loves making Lila jealous & when SVMS‘ soccer team makes it to a higher division, she loves the extra attention she gets from Aaron Dallas dedicating his goals to her. When they learn the field must be enlarged, Jessica fundraises hard, but wealthy Mr. Fowler pulls through & puts Lila in the spotlight. So, Jessica switches sides & tries to stop the expansion which will require cutting down trees. Meanwhile Liz‘s journalism improves here!

JenlovesJT47 What do you think about Steven and Aaron ending up together in Sweet Valley Confidential? 🧐 7d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Ugh… I try to forget that Sweet Valley Confidential exists… there‘s just no foundation for so many of the choices made in it! Needless to say, that‘s not one that I am looking forward to re-reading! Needless to say, that‘s one couple I never saw getting together! 5d
JenlovesJT47 Lol right? I did like the Sweet Life books but Sweet Valley Confidential was a travesty. I think Francine wrote it herself without ever having read all of the ghostwritten books that came before. Steven imo is like the straightest guy in the series so it came out of nowhere. Same with Aaron. Make it make sense! Although what did we expect when at the beginning of the book Steven is somehow back with Cara who moved to another country in SVH 😆 5d

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Exactly!!! Plus I don‘t remember who, but I think someone came back from being dead, too! Although, that‘s definitely not the first time that happened in the series as a whole! 😱 3d
JenlovesJT47 Yeah I can‘t remember which ones, maybe Olivia and one of the dudes who died in the earthquake, can‘t remember. But it was a travesty lol 😵 3d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Yeah— I know Olivia came back to life in SVU after dying in high school, but I think she resurrected again! I guess finding out who else is the only real highlight of that part of the re-reading project! 🤣 3d

Another favorite featuring yet another abandoned #SweetValley mansion! In this 2nd spring break, Jessica finds a barnacle-encrusted necklace that soon captures all of her attention & seems to cause recurring nightmares. When Liz finds it, she falls victim to it next—with cousin Robin following suit as they all work as extras in the movie filmed in the mansion. Working together, they learn the real story of the Keller mansion & the cursed necklace!

JenlovesJT47 My second favorite! I think I read this one almost as many times as The Evil Twin. 🤓 2w
JenlovesJT47 Is your book a smaller version than the normal size like mine is? I don‘t remember why they did that. It always annoyed me the book wasn‘t the same size as the rest of them. 2w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 This is a great one— & one I frequently re-read, too!! Mine is actually a normal size… the background book with the picture of a (not cursed) ruby pendant is actually huge— it‘s a coffee table book from the Field Museum about their gem collection, so it‘s a bit misleading. My copy is a bit tattered though! I think the only small ones I have were from the UK originally! 2w
JenlovesJT47 Hmm I dunno why mine is small, I don‘t have it around to look at but it might have been one that was 99 cents or something like that so it was smaller. It‘s about the same size as a Senior Year book. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w

Jack joins this small research expedition, almost immediately at odds with one of his older & rougher companions. This is another memorable installment! New student Anna Reynolds is not only different because of her interest in aerobics & health food but also because she‘s SVMS‘ first deaf & Asian student. Adept at reading lips, this is still a huge transition, but she quickly makes friends with both twins. Cammi Adams seems to be avoiding Anna— but only because she knows all about being deaf from living with her parents. Cammi risks her secret to help Anna!

JenlovesJT47 This is a good one! 2w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Yes!! Definitely one that I remembered well from reading it as a kid! But I don‘t really remember Anna being in more books after this one! So I‘m looking forward to keeping an eye out for her— maybe she is in the later books that will be new to me! 🤞 2w

For the cover alone, I‘ve been saving this used bookstore find for reading on actual Halloween! Unfortunately, the cover is the best part of this very 90s horror novel. With gore, absolutely cringingly awful sex scenes & wooden characters who so nonchalantly accept the supernatural & never really discuss anything, this is a slog to get through. Never delivering any real chills or thrills, I guess I‘ll be using this as a decoration moving forward!

Oooo! This #ThreeListThursday was a tough one! I‘m not sure that any of my real favorites made the list, but I still had a hard time narrowing this down to three!
Other than the Sweet Valley High Thrillers, my childhood was filled with exchanging Mary Higgins Clark books with my grandmother and though this isn‘t my favorite of hers, I have read it a few times. And I love both Case Histories and Big Little Lies!
Thanks @dabbe for organizing #TLT!

dabbe YW! I read Clark's books with my mom and grandma, too! 🤩 CASE HISTORIES is now on my TBR! Thanks for sharing and playing! 🖤🎃🖤 3w
TorieStorieS @dabbe I really loved the whole series (though she just had a sixth installment come out last month after five years of waiting that I haven‘t actually read yet… I will probably reread them all first!) 3w
JenlovesJT47 Big Little Lies is so good! Have you watched the show? I also just binged another Liane Moriarty show, Nine Perfect Strangers. I thought it was really good. 3w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I did see the show! But I haven‘t watched Nine Perfect Strangers— is that on HBO, too?? I don‘t know how I missed it! I watched Apples Never Fall on Peacock, too, but they made more changes than I expected! 3w

And when Jessica ditches Aaron for Bruce, Liz consoles Aaron—& winds up kissing him! But for a #SweetValleyValentinesDay, Ellen hosts another boy/girl party where all the mixed-up couples can be set to rights! Make-up kisses & a food fight!

JenlovesJT47 This was always one of my faves! 3w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 It‘s such a fun one!! Though despite their excitement, it‘s definitely not the first boy/girl dance! That was what Aaron Dallas did for his birthday back when the grandparents were in town! 🤣 3w
JenlovesJT47 Lol I have read almost none of the earlier books, I am coming to realize. I know I read the Mandy Miller one where she‘s sick, then I started reading them in the 60s. I got earlier books here and there when I could, like the first 5 or so. So I‘m thoroughly enjoying this read through! 3w

In this fifth #SweetValleyChristmas for the twins, it‘s Christmas Eve & the twins stay behind to exchange gifts to each other while everyone else goes to the airport for Alice‘s parents. JenlovesJT47 Yes like I said, Lila is so dramatic and I‘m here for it lol. I always wished this book was a movie but they would probably not do it justice 😆 3w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I have always had a soft spot for Lila, even when she‘s at her snottiest! Considering what they did with the TV show, I am guessing a movie wouldn‘t be the same!! 🤣 3w
JenlovesJT47 Yes, me too! Lila‘s Story was the only good one out of all 5 of those superstar stories. And don‘t get me started on the TV show!! 😤 Of course I watched it when it was on but I was so mad! Lila— a redhead?!?! Todd — blonde?? No no no no lol. The twins and Winston were spot on though lol. 3w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I know!! I really didn‘t watch much of the show because it was just too different and I couldn‘t handle it! But I may try to give it a watch at some point… but maybe not, because I don‘t know that I would be able to handle it any better now. My husband remembers the show better than I did because his younger sisters would watch it, so I always think it‘s funny that he has some frame of reference for these books!🤣 3w
JenlovesJT47 I have it on dvd somewhere but I have never been able to bring myself to watch the whole thing 😆 And if you read those 3 special edition SVH books that are about the show it tells you just how totally they screw up some of the storylines! I‘ve been looking forward to this one since I first heard about it! I really enjoy Chizmar‘s writing & this standalone set in 1983 Appalachia has plenty of time period nostalgia, & a creeping tension as three college friends work together on a school project on roadside memorials. When creepy things start happening, it quickly becomes impossible to know who to trust. It opens a little slowly, but the ending certainly keeps the pages flying fast!

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I haven‘t! But it‘s in my wishlist on Audible! I really enjoyed his Boogeyman books, though, so I‘m sure I will love it, too!! 3w
JenlovesJT47 I‘m a big Stephen King fan and Gwendy is one of my favorites. The audiobook is really good. Maggie Siff (Tara from Sons of Anarchy) is the narrator. It‘s only 3 hours and there are 2 more books in the series, but the first one is the best. 3w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I knew it was short, which is why it‘s still on my wishlist… I try to wait for sales on books under 10 hours and save my credits for longer ones! I have found that I enjoy King‘s books more on audio— or maybe it‘s just that I have liked those ones I listened to more than the ones I physically read? 🤷‍♀️ 3w
JenlovesJT47 That‘s funny, I‘m usually the opposite. I try to read all his books with my eyeballs first because I don‘t want to miss anything. 🤓 Makes sense about Audible! I used to do the same but these days I get all my audiobooks on Hoopla or Overdrive. 3w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I think IT on audio converted me to preferring King on audio— it‘s a long listen, but such a great performance! I have been an Audible member for so long and have always been happy with it, though I have heard good things about both Hoopla and Overdrive. Spotify has some audiobooks now, too! 3w
JenlovesJT47 Yes I saw that on Spotify, I think you can listen for 15 hours a month or something like that! 3w

I‘d heard the hype, but still found this to be an electrifying debut with such immediacy that it‘s hard to stop listening for any reason! The book opens with a mother of two young children startling awake at the sound of a person in their house in the middle of the night. The tension & horror begins there… and between this fresh horror, we learn the family‘s backstory.

DogMomIrene I loved this one too! I was scared that it might be too scary, but I read it so quickly I don‘t think I had time to freak out. 4w
TorieStorieS @DogMomIrene I think if I listened to this at night and home alone, rather than mostly walking my dog in the daylight, it would have been too scary… I gasped out loud a few times and frightened my dog, too! 4w
DogMomIrene @TorieStorieS Agree! I was reading at night, but my husband was around. And I‘ve done the gasping reaction in the car with my dogs and I have to reassure them that I‘m okay. 4w

TorieStorieS @DogMomIrene I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who accidentally gives their dog a scare! I did scare my husband after reading SOMEONE IN THE ATTIC because I opened up our attic to take the picture which I guess sounded creepy to him! 🤣 If you haven‘t read that one, I definitely recommend it! Frustrating characters but an addictive read like this one! 4w
DogMomIrene @TorieStorieS I just added Someone in the Attic to my TBR earlier in October. I can‘t remember if I heard about it here or Bookstagram, but even with frustrating characters, the plot sounds really creepy. And I had an apartment years ago where I wondered if someone was living in the crawl space above my unit. 4w
TorieStorieS @DogMomIrene Eeeekkk!! That‘s horrifying!! I got my copy through Book of the Month club and have since listened to another book from the author on audio! 4w

The SOAR! (Science Offers Awesome Rewards!) program comes to #SweetValley with an aptitude test allowing a select group of students to spend 2 weeks in an interactive immersion class. No one is more surprised than Jessica when she tests in & though she‘s horrified to be with the nerds, she can‘t help but be interested in the subject matter, field trips & being in class with Elizabeth. Janet‘s jealous because her latest crush is in SOAR too!

Thanks, @JenlovesJT47 for the tag for the #ThreeListThursday! It was tough to narrow this one down to three since the top 100 has so many good movies on it, but Jaws is my favorite movie and Strangers on a Train and ET both are ones that I love, too! Thanks, @dabbe for organizing the #TLT— and glad Jaws was available to be selected finally! 🤣

JenlovesJT47 I love all of these movies. I got to see Jaws for the first time on the big screen a few years ago at my little downtown theater. And Strangers On A Train is so good! Robert Walker was a great actor who didn‘t make enough movies unfortunately. And I love E.T. ❤️ 4w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I went with my dad a few years ago to see it on the big screen, too! Next summer is the fiftieth anniversary of the movie so I am curious to see what festivities that will bring! 🦈❤️ 4w
JenlovesJT47 Have you read the book? It‘s on my list! 🦈🦈🦈🦈 4w

dabbe The 50th anniversary of JAWS? Holy guacamole, Batman! Glad it made this list; it just had to, right? Thanks for playing and sharing. 🖤🧡🖤 4w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I have read the book… but I must say, I think it‘s one of those rare instances where the movie is actually better! The characters are more likable in the movie! 4w
TorieStorieS @dabbe I know!! 50 years!! I think they may do something for it on Martha‘s Vineyard! But at the very least, I am hoping for some commemorative swag available online! 🤣 4w

Murder Road | Simone St. James

Pickpick

I‘ve enjoyed several of St. James‘ earlier books so I was excited to dive into this one! I appreciated the 1995 setting & really liked the pop culture references though some of the MI geography seemed a little confusing. This ghost story fails to deliver real chills but opens with newlyweds driving to their honeymoon, waylaid by an unexpected encounter with a stranger on the side of the road changes their lives forever! A bit predictable but fun!

JenlovesJT47 I love all of her books. Since you‘re my book twin you‘ve probably already read it but this one is my favorite 4w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I did read and love that one!! Book twinning continues! 🤣🤣 4w

When the twins stumble over a foreign exchange program, they want to sign up. But without speaking another language, they apply to be a host family. After a call, Jessica gets everyone excited about Giovanni Screta. Lila brags about her experience with Italian boys but at the airport, Giovanna, a sophisticated tween from Florence joins them. Though her English isn‘t as great as her fashion sense, her messiness & flirting cause bigger problems!

1. Oh, this is so hard!! My favorite citrus is lemon, berry is strawberry, melon is watermelon but I also just love pineapple! 🤣

2. I think my most recent five star read with a meal memorably shared is Anna Johnston‘s THE BORROWED LIFE OF FREDERICK FIFE

Thanks for the tag @JenlovesJT47 and for organizing @TheSpineView !

JenlovesJT47 I craved watermelon constantly when I was pregnant. I am very bad and don‘t each much fruit in general but also love lemons and limes. 😬🍋🍉 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Our old dog loved watermelon too, so we used to blend and freeze it for him in little cups for the summer! We are pretty big fruit eaters in this house— right now it‘s all apples still, though I had some raspberries for breakfast! 1mo

Kill Creek | Scott Thomas

Mehso-so

I came to this award-winning debut with high expectations—& the promising beginning, while not frightening but intriguing with 4 renowned horror authors (with comparisons to real-life authors) spending Halloween night in a haunted house for an interview makes a great set up. Each author harbors their own secrets & leaving the house is only the beginning. The drawn out climax & unlikable characters eventually made me stop caring who‘d live or die!

The Ghost in the Bell Tower | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

Pickpick

This has always been one of my favorites! Great-Aunt Helen inherits the Lakeview Inn & decides to fix up the building that‘s been abandoned for 70 years. The Wakefield kids along with cousins Robin & Stacey & Joe Howell spend a #SweetValleySummer helping out—& pranking each other though insufferable Elizabeth keeps being too logical for their ghosty tricks… until the pranks take on a life of their own! Spooky but fun, I just love this ghost story!

JenlovesJT47 I loved this one, looking forward to my reread! 1mo

Mehso-so

I really enjoyed Audrain‘s debut novel, so I had some high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, despite the fast pacing, the unlikable characters & unsatisfying ending left me wanting. I‘m sure this could lead to lively discussion but the four different women‘s perspectives here certainly don‘t make neighborhood life appealing! Whitney‘s rage, Blair‘s creepy nosiness, Rebecca‘s extreme secrecy & Mara‘s pent-up emotion all were hard to connect with!

BookLineNSinker I started this one but had a really hard time getting into it. I ended up not finishing it over the two week period of my Libby loan. I wanted to like it and I loved #ThePush, but this just didn't have the same appeal for me. 1mo
TorieStorieS @BookLineNSinker I know what you mean! This fell flat to me, too— but I am still planning on checking out her next book! Hopefully it‘s more like her debut and less like this one!🤞 1mo

The Hairnet gets a student teacher who brings fresh fun to the pioneer unit— in class they pan for gold, make cosmetics from berries & best of all, spend a class field trip over the weekend to a pioneer style farm the college runs. The boys make a bet that they can follow the farm rules without modern comforts better than the girls with speech making stakes. Jessica sneaks in a portable CD player & the boys have a TV! A silly & fun one for sure!

Thanks, @JenlovesJT47 for the tag for this #ThreeListThursday! I must have a thing for the end of the alphabet because I had the hardest time narrowing down this list! But I love Witness For The Prosecution (thanks, Agatha Christie!) and I love the acting here! My ankle twinges just thinking about how my friend and I tried to perfect Verbal‘s limp in The Usual Suspects and The Uninvited is the first scary movie I ever watched— with my grandmother!

TorieStorieS Thanks, @dabbe for organizing this fun #TLT! 1mo
JenlovesJT47 I haven‘t watched the last two, I‘ll add them to my list! Witness For The Prosecution is SO good! 1mo

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I know!! I remember just being totally shocked the first time seeing it! And yes, the other two are worth watching! The Uninvited may be a little harder to track down… I think I‘ve only ever seen in on TCM back when they played b&w movies exclusively! 1mo
TorieStorieS @dabbe I hope you enjoy them both! The Uninvited may be a little harder to find, but it‘s worth trying to track down! 1mo

This debut novel quickly becomes impossible to put down! Mother horror has become a recent sub-genre & though this reminded me of a few other books, I still stayed up to finish in one sitting! With her husband deployed, Flora gives birth alone & though her dad & stepmother stay for a short time initially, Flora‘s isolation & sleep deprivation starts weighing on her, bringing back episodes from her own childhood, body horror & an uncanny visitor.

Siblings Andy & Melissa McCormick play starring roles here. The Hairnet‘s social studies class assigns partners to work on family interviews. Jessica gets Lila & Elizabeth‘s assigned to Melissa. When Melissa‘s mom suddenly succumbs to a heart condition, senior SVH basketball star Andy is determined not to let CPS split them up since they haven‘t heard from their musician father in years. The lies mount up, but as usual St. Elizabeth saves the day!
