I‘m a sucker for an Egyptian mystery/adventure but when I heard it was to be a duology, I waited to have the second in hand before cracking this open! Considering that cliffhanger of an ending, I‘m glad! Main character Inez leaves Argentina after receiving a letter about her parents‘ disappearance in the desert. Always longing to join them, she hopes to uncover the truth of what happened to them. Some predictable turns & Inez‘s naïveté soured it.

After a planned Mother‘s Day party is a disaster when no one completes party errands, a debate ensues over who has it rougher— parents or kids. Alice “swaps” places with the twins for the weekend— she has to get rollerblade-a-thon donations for Jessica & complete Elizabeth‘s media report while the twins take on household responsibilities plus designing a sun porch for their neighbor. It‘s fun to see Alice really get into it despite VCR trouble!

I‘ve enjoyed several of McFarlane‘s other novels, but this one fell a bit flat for me… Georgina‘s caught in a bit of arrested development at 30. Though she wants to write, she keeps taking jobs without trajectory & not using her time to write. After an epically bad day gets worse, the silver lining lands her a temporary bartending job with a flash from her past. I struggled connecting with Georgina & her family here but liked the central romance.

I can see why this was a #GoodreadsChoiceWinner for the year! I couldn‘t stop listening to this one! The performance is great & all of these wedding people really came to life! When Phoebe leaves her suddenly empty MO home, she plans a nice last room service meal & that‘s it forever. But as the only non-invitee at the RI hotel for Gary & Lila‘s wedding, the bride won‘t let her lavish 6 day celebration be spoiled. The quick intimacy draws you in!

Elizabeth the Seventh Grader | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

After a parent-teacher conference, everyone agrees that Elizabeth is too smart to stay in the 6th grade. She gets a whole new schedule, & to her twin‘s horror (especially since this means Liz is invited to 7th/8th only parties!), immediately becomes a 7th grader! Steven helps with a reverse psychology plan, but though Liz aces her new classes, she lacks the fashion sense needed & feels out of place with spin the bottle in particular! New to me!

I think this was my favorite book club pick of the year for our club! I literally couldn‘t put it down and stayed up late to finish it in practically one sitting! Williams manages three timelines between two main narrators with most chapters ending on a cliffhanger, making it easy to justify another chapter (or 3) at a time! It led to a very lively discussion (even among the DNFers!) & while the Egyptian storyline was a miss for some, I loved it!

To raise money, the Boosters are selling personalized cheers that couples can use to ask each other to the dance; meanwhile Liz gets too much into the spirit by writing overly romantic lovegrams to put in the Sixers. I had so much fun reading my April #BookOfTheMonth pick! I wish I‘d read it in the warmer parts of the year, but reading by tree light does add a certain magic! This adventure fantasy— complete with seadragons, neat marking magic where tattoos come to life, a quest & romance— makes for a fast-paced & exciting read! Hanalei hasn‘t returned to her home since her father‘s betrayal, but when forced her return, it‘s a different welcome than envisioned!

Both Jessica & Lila want the titular role, & bet that the loser comes to school wearing the warts meant for the nurse‘s costume! The first #HitchToScreen book made for a quick (& surprisingly seasonal!) listen that was really well performed (despite the book being read by a man, when I would have expected a lady since the book is from Mary Ellen‘s POV!). After the death of her mother, she travels to the Cornish coast to live with her aunt & uncle at the titular inn. But she quickly realizes that the inn has a dark reputation & soon she strives to unmask its secrets!

JenlovesJT47 How funny that a man narrated it. I can‘t wait to watch the Hitchcock movie this weekend. It‘s one of the few I‘ve never seen. I also came across a remake made a few years ago and got it from the library. Glad you enjoyed it! It made me go out and get the rest of Daphne‘s books! 🤓 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I will say that he was quite dramatic, so once I got over the oddness of his gender, I really enjoyed it! I am excited to watch, too— I‘ve also never seen it! Which one of hers will you read next? 1w
JenlovesJT47 @TorieStorieS My Cousin Rachel has been on my TBR forever so I‘m hoping to start that one in January. I‘ve read The Birds & Rebecca (both are excellent) but that‘s about it! 1w
See All 19 Comments
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 My book club read My Cousin Rachel a few years ago— I really liked it a lot! And I read Rebecca so long ago that I really should re-read it! I went through a Gone With The Wind phase in junior high and the librarian recommended Rebecca and The Thorn Birds— and something else… now I can‘t think of it! But I am due to revisit both!! 1w
JenlovesJT47 @TorieStorieS well Gone With The Wind happens to be my favorite book of all time (and top 3 movies of all time!) — I read it in high school, then rented the movie from Blockbuster and my love of classic movies was born 🤓 1w
JenlovesJT47 And Rebecca is so good! I had already seen the movie about 20 times before I read the book but the book is excellent. Would have been even better if I hadn‘t seen the movie first. 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Of course it‘s one of your favorite books, book twin!! 🤣🥰 My paperback copy literally fell apart (I also love the late sequels like Scarlett) and I tried to get a play production of it going in 8th grade! I saw the movies first for both of them, but I feel like the differences kept it interesting! 1w
JenlovesJT47 Lol I sneaked the sequel, Scarlett, into a book report in high school (went to a Christian school so it was very taboo 😳), I love it. Haven‘t read it in a very long time. 1w
Sace I‘m currently listening to an audiobook narrated by Barbara Rosenblat and it‘s excellent. I want to try the audiobook for Rebecca next. There was one with a male narrator, but luckily I found one with a female narrator. 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Hah! I am seeing my mom for some Christmas shopping in a little while so I‘m going to ask her if she remembers telling me that I was too young for these books (but then enjoying reading-watching the movies with me!) Plus there‘s the Rhett Butler one and I would definitely be up for a buddy read of all of these, too! I even have some GWTW ornaments on one of my Christmas trees! 1w
TorieStorieS @Sace Oh man! I am jealous of the female narrator find! Where do you usually get your audiobooks? Our house is out-of-district for the library so now I mainly use Audible, Chirp or Spotify. 1w
JenlovesJT47 Ok you‘re definitely my book twin. I have boxes of GWTW ornaments. Fancy ones that I got from some club or something. And the collectors plates. We should definitely do a buddy read! There‘s GWTW, Scarlett, Rhett Butler‘s People, one about Mammy I can‘t remember the name of, and a few others. Would be fun! 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 For sure!! I think I have a sheet of stamps, hahahaha! And I don‘t think I ever read the one about Mammy (though it‘s on my shelves!). Let‘s definitely do a buddy read!! Goodreads has this list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/117759.Gone_With_the_Wind_Sequels 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Some of them might not be worth reading, but it‘s a longer list than I expected!! 1w
JenlovesJT47 Ooh, down the rabbit hole I go! 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 🤣🤣🤣 1w
Sace @TorieStorieS my library uses Hoopla. While it rarely has the newest books, I can still find some gems. 1w
Sace @TorieStorieS I take that back. I found it on Cloud Library, another service my library uses. 1w
TorieStorieS @Sace Thanks! I know Hoopla, but Cloud Library is new to me! 1w

This 7th #SweetValleyChristmas is another memorable one! Janet Howell‘s co-hosting a party with her older brother, Joe, Steven‘s best friend. Steven doesn‘t want to be embarrassed by his baby sisters so he schemes to get his parents to forbid them from going! All of this being treated like a kid makes the twins wish to be grown-up! A (2nd) Christmas carnival grants their wish & they‘re busting their seams & forced to join the work force! Such fun!

JenlovesJT47 Ooh this is the one I‘m starting next after I finish Holiday Mischief! 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I loved it! I remember reading it as a kid but somehow I didn‘t put it together that this is basically the Sweet Valley version of the movie Big, hahahaha! 🤣 1w
JenlovesJT47 Man they rip off a bunch of movies/books in these Christmas books but that‘s why they‘re so fun 🤓 1w

The themes & gore balanced out here, & I loved the creative processes here but had a hard time connecting with Samantha.

But when they find artifacts & remains (plus a seance later), Kala helps save the property!

JenlovesJT47 What did you think of this one? I always had a vivid memory of the part where the boys are hiding in trash bags and everyone freaks out thinking they‘re in the garbage truck 😅 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 That part was so fun!! I enjoyed it— and was surprised that they used an ouija board and had a seance! Music literally bringing the shack down was great, too! This #NewAdultThriller comes with a gripping premise— at a DC university, the psychology department runs a study on student psychopaths in exchange for tuition. But the participants are turning up murdered! With multiple perspectives & unlikely alliances, it‘s a fast-paced listen but the killer‘s motivation comes out in too much of a Scooby Doo-esque reveal for this to be completely satisfying. Plot holes & thin characterizations left me wanting!

I had so much fun reading this one!! My first introduction to Osman‘s writing, I already can‘t wait to dive into his earlier books! While my #bookclub didn‘t love this one as much as I did, I‘m so excited to give a copy to my own much loved, soon-to-be-retired FIL in the hopes that we may go solve murders together! Funny & gripping— though I solved the biggest twist pretty early— I loved scene-stealing Rosie & want the sequel right now!! So fun!!!

Aims42 My book club was split on this one too. I loved it and am so ready for a sequel 😍 2w
marleed I discovered I read for entertainment and my IRL bookclub is more critical of characters plot lines than am I. More than once I‘ve been alone or in the small minority of members who like a book. … I loved this book and will tread everything he writes! 2w
TorieStorieS @Aims42 I was so surprised that anyone doesn‘t enjoy murder mixed with comedy! That‘s what seemed to divide our club! But I am with you on being anxious for a sequel! This was a surprise hit for the whole year for me!! 2w
TorieStorieS @marleed I‘m lucky enough to be in 2 IRL clubs (used to be 3 but I exited one because I just couldn‘t get into some politics of selections!) and I‘m constantly surprised by what sticks in someone‘s craw and who can let things go for the ride of a novel! I think this plays out online too, to some extent, but it‘s always sad to be the only one who loves anything! Makes me extra grateful for Litsy overall!🥰 2w

I absolutely loved this coming-of-age novel that encompasses love, family, acceptance, friendship, forgiveness & faith. I think it‘d be a great book club book with plenty to discuss in this gripping listen performed by the author. This one feels a bit different with more real-life references than the books usually have! Plus, we get to see the cat Mischief and Mrs. Harrington again who helps out Liz, Lila & Olivia with their project on McCarthyism. Oddly, Janet, Kimberly & Betsy are into beatnik poetry while Ellen‘s private phone line causes a stir until Jessica cooks up trouble with 3-way calling! Rumors almost split the Unicorns up for good! But my copy ends mid-sentence!

JenlovesJT47 Which part ends mid sentence? I could look it up for you. Gah I remember being a victim of the 3-way calling thing in the 90s lol. 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 The very last page ends mid-sentence and there‘s no next book announcement, so it must be a misprint! I checked on Anna‘s Archive and it ends the same way! I bought another one online from ThriftBooks and it also ends that way… so I added it to my list to look for in person in case there‘s a reprinted correction out there somewhere! And yes… this one really specifically dates the series!! 1w
JenlovesJT47 How weird!! I have a physical copy of this book but I don‘t have access to it. ☹️ 1w

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Well, it would be interesting to see someday if your copy has the real ending! It‘s definitely strange, but not my only Sweet Valley misprint! THE UNHONEYMOONERS was my first experience with this great writing duo, so my hopes may have been a little too high for this novella sequel giving Olive‘s identical twin her own romantic comedy. The full cast feeling is fun & it‘s certainly a quick listen, but it‘s not as funny or charming as I expected. While Elizabeth & her friends look for seashells, Denny Jacobsen & his brother surf. But when a big wave knocks Denny out, Liz doesn‘t hesitate to dive in & save him! Afterwards, Denny starts worshipping her which Liz finds annoying—especially since it incurs Janet‘s wrath since she has a huge crush on Denny. And so the scheming begins for how Janet can save Denny‘s life instead. This one is genuinely hilarious & just plain fun from start to end!

JenlovesJT47 I love this one and also love the tie in with A Christmas Without Elizabeth! 1mo

Getting Away with Murder | Kathryn Foxfield

Mehso-so

This #YAThriller hooked me with its alternating perspectives from identical twins, Saffron & Georgia. Though not alike—& barely even friends after Saffron‘s posting embarrassing videos online. But they continue to play Sole Survivor with the same group of seven others. When Saffron speculates which of their group archetypes would win the game in real life, a rogue AI grants her wish in this oddly deadly mashup of Willy Wonka & The Breakfast Club.

Lila's Music Video | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

When the Unicorn Club visits Lila, she enthusiastically shows them all the steps to Melody Powers‘ latest video. Rock TV holds a school contest & the Unicorns organize a band for the grand prize of (another!) VCR for the school. Lila demands to be the lead singer but other than dance moves, she can‘t sing it… so she forces nerdy Johanna Porter to sing while Lila lip syncs. Surprisingly, Lila raises Johanna‘s confidence & gives her a makeover!

Three mothers of children at an elite Atlanta private school come together for a fundraising committee. Each woman harbors big secrets and their coming together helps them each change their lives for the better as their secrets come to light. It‘s a quick listen, albeit rather predictable and I‘m not sure how genuine their friendship ever really feels. Still, it‘s well-performed and kept my attention until the end!

The Unicorns scramble for an idea for their charity carnival booth before landing on the creation of a love potion (pineapple punch). Meanwhile, the Wakefield siblings make bets over who will get tickets to the upcoming Johnny Buck concert with the Sweet Valley Tribune & Mr. Bowman raffling off tickets for the charity carnival. Meanwhile, nerdy Peter Burns overcomes the Unicorn‘s disdain in his pursuit of Mary Wallace proving the potion works!

I‘m not the target audience, as I‘m about as far from having a green thumb as possible (I manage to kill even the hardiest ones!) & despite my deep love for #MurderSheWrote (referenced within the book!), #CozyMysteries aren‘t my go-to. Maggie returns to the small MA town where her grandmother raised her after the collapse of her marriage. Dodging a greedy cousin & persistent real estate developer, she finds a body & investigates! Too predictable!

Jessica Saves the Trees | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

Jessica loves making Lila jealous & when SVMS‘ soccer team makes it to a higher division, she loves the extra attention she gets from Aaron Dallas dedicating his goals to her. When they learn the field must be enlarged, Jessica fundraises hard, but wealthy Mr. Fowler pulls through & puts Lila in the spotlight. So, Jessica switches sides & tries to stop the expansion which will require cutting down trees. Meanwhile Liz‘s journalism improves here!

JenlovesJT47 What do you think about Steven and Aaron ending up together in Sweet Valley Confidential? 🧐 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Ugh… I try to forget that Sweet Valley Confidential exists… there‘s just no foundation for so many of the choices made in it! Needless to say, that‘s not one that I am looking forward to re-reading! Needless to say, that‘s one couple I never saw getting together! 1mo
JenlovesJT47 Lol right? I did like the Sweet Life books but Sweet Valley Confidential was a travesty. I think Francine wrote it herself without ever having read all of the ghostwritten books that came before. Steven imo is like the straightest guy in the series so it came out of nowhere. Same with Aaron. Make it make sense! Although what did we expect when at the beginning of the book Steven is somehow back with Cara who moved to another country in SVH 😆 1mo

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Exactly!!! Plus I don‘t remember who, but I think someone came back from being dead, too! Although, that‘s definitely not the first time that happened in the series as a whole! 😱 1mo
JenlovesJT47 Yeah I can‘t remember which ones, maybe Olivia and one of the dudes who died in the earthquake, can‘t remember. But it was a travesty lol 😵 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Yeah— I know Olivia came back to life in SVU after dying in high school, but I think she resurrected again! I guess finding out who else is the only real highlight of that part of the re-reading project! 🤣 1mo

This quick listen sucked me right in! A fan of Banghart‘s YA Fantasy, this foray into YA Thriller makes for an exciting & fun time! Jessa, despite being the younger sibling, is a natural rule-follower, mess cleaner & committed to a life plan. Though her parents don‘t allow friends over without supervision, they make an exception for Jessa & her 3 besties to have a sleepover in their remote & haunted home. But a storm changes their lives forever!

But the morning after the twins fall asleep in the den, jokes that they are psychic turn into something more than funny as they correctly guess each other‘s answers time and again! But the more they practice for the show, the worse their abilities seem to get. Can Maria help them cheat?

With multiple perspectives, a late-1990s & a modern storyline plus multimedia content, this writing duo‘s second novel makes for an engaging mystery. Jess Fadley disappeared in only moments from the front of her home while her younger sister looked away for only ten seconds. 24 years later, the grisly discovery of remains brings new focus on what was actually a string of disappearances. Red herrings & a real twist beg for this one to be discussed!

The Curse of the Ruby Necklace | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

Another favorite featuring yet another abandoned #SweetValley mansion! In this 2nd spring break, Jessica finds a barnacle-encrusted necklace that soon captures all of her attention & seems to cause recurring nightmares. When Liz finds it, she falls victim to it next—with cousin Robin following suit as they all work as extras in the movie filmed in the mansion. Working together, they learn the real story of the Keller mansion & the cursed necklace!

JenlovesJT47 My second favorite! I think I read this one almost as many times as The Evil Twin. 🤓 1mo
JenlovesJT47 Is your book a smaller version than the normal size like mine is? I don‘t remember why they did that. It always annoyed me the book wasn‘t the same size as the rest of them. 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 This is a great one— & one I frequently re-read, too!! Mine is actually a normal size… the background book with the picture of a (not cursed) ruby pendant is actually huge— it‘s a coffee table book from the Field Museum about their gem collection, so it‘s a bit misleading. My copy is a bit tattered though! I think the only small ones I have were from the UK originally! 1mo
JenlovesJT47 Hmm I dunno why mine is small, I don‘t have it around to look at but it might have been one that was 99 cents or something like that so it was smaller. It‘s about the same size as a Senior Year book. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo

Recommended by my very favorite author, this historical ghost story set in the frigid & isolated Arctic Circle, this makes for an unsettling listen. Jack joins this small research expedition, almost immediately at odds with one of his older & rougher companions. When circumstances strand him alone with the huskies, it‘s more than just the months of darkness that add to the chill… It‘s a quick listen & one that‘d make for a good book club pick!

Won't Someone Help Anna? | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

Pickpick

This is another memorable installment! New student Anna Reynolds is not only different because of her interest in aerobics & health food but also because she‘s SVMS‘ first deaf & Asian student. Adept at reading lips, this is still a huge transition, but she quickly makes friends with both twins. Cammi Adams seems to be avoiding Anna— but only because she knows all about being deaf from living with her parents. Cammi risks her secret to help Anna!

JenlovesJT47 This is a good one! 2mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Yes!! Definitely one that I remembered well from reading it as a kid! But I don‘t really remember Anna being in more books after this one! So I‘m looking forward to keeping an eye out for her— maybe she is in the later books that will be new to me! 🤞 2mo
JenlovesJT47 I was going to ask because I can‘t remember for sure if she shows up again, but I believe she does. Just not sure when! 2mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 well, we will find out for sure! 😊 2mo
