Turbulence | David Szalay

Pickpick

Short read on 12 people who lives are connected, in a
“6 degrees of separation” kind of way. Szalay did a great job of writing this from an aerial point of view. My only issue (lately, always the issue) was the ending. It just dropped off, as if it reached the maximum allowed characters or someone ripped the last few pages out 🤷🏾‍♀️
I would still recommend reading based on how the connections were written.

3.5 stars. If Greer had not added that *wink* at the end. This would be a cool 2.5 - 3 stars. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2970078530

Reggie I liked this one a lot because he didn‘t die of AIDS, he wasn‘t someone‘s sassy best friend, and he wasn‘t the serial killer. It‘s hard not to read at least one of those attached to a gay narrative. 5y

I was not enamored by this book at all. It was just okay. I think the ending caught a lot of readers off guard, including myself; making the story seem more than what it really was🤷🏾‍♀️

“Racism is not merely a simplistic hatred. It is, more often, broad sympathy toward some and broader skepticism toward others. Black America ever lives under that skeptical eye. Hence the old admonishments to be “twice as good.” Hence the need for a special “talk” administered to black boys about how to be extra careful when relating to the police.”

Reagan I need to know more. 5y
Reagan Sorry, I haven't read the book or anything. I can guess from the description why it would be problematic, and was just curious. 5y
YaYa_Reads I‘m sorry @Reagan! No apologies needed. I was trying to figure out how to articulate my thoughts in a short but concise way. I wasn‘t having any luck and then got caught up in something else. I think it would be better and easier for us both if you just read what I wrote about it in goodreads. I‘m extremely new to Litsy so I don‘t know if there‘s a DM I could send to you lol. For now, I‘ll just add the link to post. 😁 5y
Reagan Thanks! That's perfect, I'll check it out. I love that litsy keeps it brief, but it can be challenging sometimes. 5y

Add this to the list of books that should be required in schools!
I learned so much from reading this. Not only about how the global economy works but the origins and continuance of most socioeconomic issues. I love America and would not want to be anywhere else. Nonetheless, this book delivers harsh realities of America‘s need of gratitude and humility.

Please add this to your lists

Now this is brave! I wish my mother was more transparent with her past life. I‘m positive it would have helped me, over the years, to empathize with her as a woman and not expect perfection from her or myself.

Reggie I agree with this. My father picked onions with his family during the summers when he was a kid. If they got a certain number of bags before noon they were given a quarter. And he said you wanted that quarter because then you could buy a coke. I didn‘t hear that story till I was almost 30. I wished he had told me it earlier. 5y

Keeping it simple...I respect the fact that Union was honest about the things she chose to share. I just do not believe some parts were genuine and sincere. Although I truly empathize with the struggles she endured growing up, I believe she is still struggling to identify who she is, today.

Couple Next Door | Shari Lapena

This was a page turner for about 80% of the book. There were lots of twists and turns, ups and downs; points where I thought I knew where the author was going and then...boom! Another twist.

Sadly, the descend was a let-down. It wasn't particularly bad, just boring and predictable; as if the author gave up. Or, maybe, since it started out on a high, I was expecting it to end on high. Isn‘t it fair to have those expectations, though?🤷🏾‍♀️

I enjoyed the book. It just took too long to get to the climax, which was about 75% in.

And then there was the end of Chapter 94/start of Chapter 95 😳

Ironically, I felt the rest to be a bit rushed and unrealistic.

For those that read this (no spoiler), what happened to Punch??

Sidenote: There are 100 chapters but the chapters are very small; 1-3 pages.

The Alchemist | Paulo Coelho
Mehso-so

I read this book because a lot of bookers hyped it up.
For me, it was a bit too whimsical and could‘ve been categorized as a older children‘s book. I think that‘s what put me off.

There was a lot of referencing from the Bible and the Quran. Paulo Coelho did a great job mingling both beliefs, harmoniously.

Overall, the writing is great. It‘s one of those books that you want to have at least said you‘ve read it before.
