Pickpick

No one should have to read this book because this shouldn't be the history of a nation of people. But it is and it is so very similar to stories from hundreds of other nations' pasts and to thousands of people currently living within violent conflicts RIGHT NOW.

And so, because of that, this is a book that everyone should read. It is difficult to take in. Overcome the fear of reading this truth and hear Loung Ung's story.

Want to read a random someone's unedited diary, filled with ramblings about sex partners, anxieties, and a vomit fetish? Then this may be the book for you. Unfortunately, it was not the book for me. A couple essays nearly moved into intelligent reflection, but I found most basically a waste of time. I was excited to read this because I, like the author, deal with anxiety and depression. But I should have bailed and read something else instead.

Reviewsbylola I am intrigued by the vomit fetish. 8y

It took me a bit to get into the rhythm of Homegoing, since each section focuses on a new character, but, once I did, it was an excellent and emotional read. This was a book club selection and I am sure the discussion will be rousing when we meet in three days. There's lots to discuss related to race relations, identity, and much more.

litsybookclub This is our book pick of the month! We would love to see you at our discussions :) 8y

Read this book! Shrill made me LOL in the opening graf. It made me reflect on life 35 pages in. About 200 pages in, I was boiling at how boneheaded people can be. Be ready to laugh a lot, dive into discussions about hate towards women, and fall in love with Lindy West.

Ugh! The research and science this book tells about our judicial system will probably frustrate you to no end, like it did me. Benforado does an outstanding job of writing about the psychology behind our criminal justice system in an approachable and interesting way that isn't too heady or academic.

The introduction to Unfair is basically giving me a heads-up that I'm going to have a knitted stomach, frustrated brain, and aching soul by the time I'm through.

Tav I've been hearing a lot about this idea--that our sense of fairness and our decisions around justice are based on delusion and self-interest. Yikes. 8y

Kathrin How do you like it?? 8y
MarlysWS I very much connect to her humor in most parts, but am much less enthusiastic about how she explains her feminism. She seems to contradict herself a lot and at times doesn't defend her thoughts but seems to wave off any potential criticism. So, it has some great humor, but also feels out-of-date. 8y

How to Be a Woman | Caitlin Moran

Much of Moran's writing in this book seems more for laughs than for offering insight, but this bit hit me. Of course I'm familiar with the horribleness of fat shaming, but I'd never thought of it as a weapon, which is exactly how many mean to use it.

marita I loved parts of this book but others made me roll my eyes. I agree, overall it wasn't terribly insightful and her feminism seemed a little...dated? I don't know. But I'm glad I read it for moments like you just described. 8y
MarlysWS I totally get that. It seems to me that she totally contradicts herself in many of the topics she's writing about. I'll definitely finish it, but this isn't one of those books that will alter how I function in the world! 8y

Pickpick

This is a beautiful story of a father and daughter and the love between them. My only major critique is that I think I don't like the unveiled twist at the end. I like the story more, I think, without this new fact added to the context. But beautiful writing and adorable quotes from the little girl.
