Vincent Van Gogh's Cat | Deborah Brown, East Washington Academy (Muncie, Ind.)
post image
Pickpick

Vincent Van Gogh‘s Cat is written by the second grade class at East Washington Academy in Muncie Indiana. This book won the “Kids Are Authors” award. I would use this book as a RA in my classroom. In this book students took inspiration from one of Van Gogh‘s paintings and made a cat out of it. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 UDL 1.1 is perfect for this book. Students get to customize a painting from a famous painter. Students could take it from the internet and change the painting into anything they wanted. I think this would allow students to learn about Vincent Van Gogh‘s art in a fun way 6y
LaGasseSam1996 UDL 3.1 is also important in this lesson. Students need to know who Vincent Van Gogh is before they can do anything. Giving them background knowledge on him will make the activity more enjoyable and less confusing. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 I think in a lesson like this you would use ESOL 6. Student might become confused quicker when talking about a man they may know very little to nothing about. I think checking in with the student more than usually would benefit them. ESOL 13 I think is important as well. Giving ESOL students a preview lesson on Vincent Van Gogh will allow them to understand his art better. 6y

claireherman This book looks like a great way to introduce students to artists and I love that it was created by young students too! I would have my own class create their own art book after reading. 6y
melindamcmullen84 Oooh I like this one! Anyway that we can incorporate student‘s abilities to do great things, I‘m in! Being able to relate this into the arts as well is super cool! 6y

I think this book plays into UDL 7.2 very nicely. This book has so much value in the lesson it teaches. **Spoiler** This book teaches students the importance of giving to others this book shows real life importance that students of all ages can learn.

WoodsKatie This book is so highly acclaimed, it‘s got to be good and integrated into classrooms! I appreciate your spoiler alert, I‘m not ready to spoil just yet but a warning was good! Great post! 6y

A Wrinkle in Time is SF novel written by Madeline L‘engle this book has won a Newberry. This SF novel would be perfect as an IR book as well as an LC book. I can see students reading this book alone and enjoying it a great amount and then I can also see students in a group discussing this book with one another. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996
If students are reading this in a group or by themselves, you will want to limit distractions for the students as much as you can. This is UDL 7.3. You can set time aside once or twice a week to allow students to read independently or to meet in their groups and discuss the book.

Kcallihan I have always loved this book and I think you did an amazing job explaining how to use it within a classroom. I think it was very important that you included limiting distractions if allowing students to read this in a group setting. I love the link to the literature circle because I think it‘s very important that every student is assigned a job or else he/she might not feel as inclined to participate. Good job!! :) 6y

Who Is J. K. Rowling? | Pam Pollack, Meg Belviso
post image
Pickpick

Who is J.K. Rowling is a B written by Pam Pollack and Meg Beviso and illustrated by Stephan Marchesi. This book is the story of J.K. Rowling‘s life. This book would be a great resource to use in an author study about many student‘s favorite author. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 When students are doing an author study I think they should be allowed to use different forms to find the information they need. UDL 4.2 is perfect for this because it allows students to use many forms of technology. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 When doing an author study note taking is very important. You want to keep a list of information you want to use. ESOL 9 would be used in this case. It would allow students to have the note taking skills to complete the author study. Note taking also allows the student to be able to look back at their notes to quickly clarify something. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/andrew-clement.... This scholastic lesson plan gives great examples on how the students can display their author study. This lesson plan would have to be tweaked to match J.K. Rowling‘s the overall lesson can be used here. It gives students what they should have in their author study 6y

First Big Book of the Ocean | Catherine D. Hughes
post image
Pickpick

Little Kids First Big Book of the Ocean is a NF book written by Catherine D. Hughes. This NF book lets students learn about the ocean in a fun way! I think this book would be an IR book. This book goes into depth about the ocean and for students who want to learn about the animals that live there this is a good choice. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 The ocean is full of amazing animals and plants UDL 1.2 would allow student to see it instead of just hearing about it in a book. Using the internet, teachers can search for animals or plants for the students to see and learn about. They can find videos for students to watch so they experience it 6y
LaGasseSam1996
If you are going to do a lesson plan that involves the ocean or any of the things in the ocean you will need to teach that vocabulary to ESOL students. ESOL 5 would be important for the student so they can place the meaning of the word with the picture. ESOL 17 would also be helpful to students they would see the plant or animal and make that connection.
6y
LaGasseSam1996 https://educators.brainpop.com/lesson-plan/ocean-habitats-background-information... . BrainPop has an amazing lesson plan for teaching students about the ocean. In the video it will show students the levels of the ocean and explain the animals that live there. 6y

The Three Billy Goats Gruff re-told by Stephen Carpenter is a TL book. This picture book has been told by word of mouth for decades. I think this book would be good as a RL. I think younger students would enjoy to hear the story of the Billy Goats. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996
UDL 3.3 is perfect for picture books such as this one. This story allows students to see everything as it happens. The pictures in this case tell the story just as much as the words. Having the students look at the pictures would tell the story even if the words were not present.
6y
LaGasseSam1996 https://teachables.scholastic.com/teachables/books/three-billy-goats-gruff-lesso... . In this lesson plan by Scholastic students will have to describe and draw their own troll. 6y
LaGasseSam1996
ESOL 30 goes well with the lesson plan I have posted above. The student would be able to draw and color the troll and the goats. This would allow them to understand fully what those creatures really are.
6y
DrSpalding This is classic children‘s literature that all students should be exposed to. This works well with storytelling and dramatic reenactment. 6y

The Giver | Lois Lowry
post image
Mehso-so

The Giver is a SF book written by Lois Lowry and has received the Newberry award. I feel like this novel would do well in a LC setting. I feel students would enjoy reading it together and talking about it. This book is about a utopian society that turns out to not be as “utopian” as it seemed. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 If this book is being used in a LC setting UDL 6.2 and 6.1 would be an excellent choice for this book. Students would have to set their own goals (6.1) and then they would have to plan out how long it would take them to reach the goal they set (6.2). 6y
LaGasseSam1996 ESOL 10 would have to be taught before putting the students in a LC. For a literature circle to be an effective one students need to be able to share their thoughts and feelings on the book 6y
LaGasseSam1996 http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/memories-matter-g... this lesson plane from ReadWriteThink has students thinking about the importance of memories. This lesson plans will have students gathering items from newspapers, interviews, and even their own history to show the importance our memory. 6y
DrSpalding I am happy to see that you read this book again. My children read it in third grade and I thought it was a bit early however we were able to discuss many aspects of the story and I think it was an opportunity for growth! Literature circles would be best however you could also read it aloud. 6y

The War that Saved My Life is a HF book written by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley and have won the Newbery award. I think this book would a great way to combine history and literature together. I think this book would do well in a LC setting. I feel like this book would do well in a third grade class to about fifth or sixth grade. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 UDL 3.1 is needed when reading this book. This book takes place during WWII students need to have some background knowledge to be able to fully get the understanding of this story. I think this book would be a good book to use in the middle or end of a WWII lesson. 6y
LaGasseSam1996
ESOL 20 I think is a strategy I would use with this book. Listing important words for the student will make their understanding of the book easier and allow them to get the full context of the story. Leaving these words on the board where the ESOL student can refer back to them is also a good idea.
6y
LaGasseSam1996 http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/reading-informati... this is a lesson plan from Read Write Think. In this lesson plan it will have students using the 3-2-1 strategy. Where they have to find three things they learned, two things they found interesting and one question they still have . I would change it slightly. Instead of using a magazine I would use the book chapters instead. 6y
DrSpalding This has been on my stack to read for a while now. This strategy, is something that could be used with many books and/or supplemental text like magazines. 6y

The Crossover is a P book written by Kwame Alexander. This book has won the Newberry as well as the Coretta Scott King Award. I think this book would make an excellent LC book. I think students would enjoy the book and would be an excellent way for students to get excited for poetry. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 UDL 8.3 would work well with this book especially in a literature circle setting. The student would be able to talk with one another about the book. They would have someone to talk about everything they liked or didn‘t within the book creating a since of community among the group. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 ESOL strategy 2 corresponds with the UDL principal talked about above. Students would be reading the book in a group. You could pair the ESOL student with another member of the group and have them read together 6y
LaGasseSam1996
http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/compiling-poetry-... this lesson plan from readwritethink has students writing their own poems and then going around the classroom to find different examples of poetry. I think for students reading this book, its important for them to know this is not the only form of poetry and this lesson plan would allow them to build on that
6y
DrSpalding The way this book is written, will entice intermediate grade students to enjoy poetry. 6y

Ugly Duckling | Jerry Pinkney
post image
Pickpick

The Ugly Duckling is retold and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney. This version of TL has won the Caldecott. This traditional story is about a duckling who just doesn‘t belong in the group he is in. But by the end of the story something amazing happens to that sad little “ducking”. I think this book would make an excellent RA story for younger students.
#LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996
UDL principal 3.1 is what I think can be used really well with this book. Some kids know what a duckling looks like, but if they don‘t you can easily pull up a picture of a duckling and then a baby swan. This will show students that there is a difference between the two animals.
6y
LaGasseSam1996 ESOL strategy number 4 meets with the UDL principal posted above. Most students have seen a picture of a baby duck before but if they haven‘t you can show the picture of a real baby duck and then a swan. The student will then be able to connect the baby ducks in the picture to the ones in the storybook as well as the baby swan. 6y
LaGasseSam1996
https://www.dltk-teach.com/fairy-tales/ugly-duckling/draw-and-write.htm this is a lesson plan I found on DLTK-teach.com. This allows the students to imagine where they would go if they themselves were the ugly duckling. This activity is best suited for a kindergarten level student. It would allow them to practice their writing skills in a fun way

This HF book written by Rodman Philbrick has gotten a Newbery award. This story takes place in Civil War times, Homer is trying to save his brother who was sold into the war. I think this book would be a fantastic book to read as a LC. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 https://www.scholastic.com/content/dam/teachers/lesson-plans/migrated-featured-f... This lesson plan from scholastic I think is perfect if you are reading this book in a LC. This allows members of the group to summarize what happened in each chapter. This can rotate around the group as the book is read. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 UDL 2.3 would work with the lesson plan above. To summarize the text you first need to decode what is major and what is a minor part of the text. Not everything in each chapter is an important part of the story. The student needs to be able to determine was is useful and what may not be. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 ESOL 2 works well in small groups which is what a LC is. I think working in the group will allow the ELL student to really understand the text and will be able to have clarification from their group mates on anything they do not understand fully. 6y

Sammy, Dog Detective is a NF book that explains the life of a dog on the force. This book is written by Colleen Stanley Bare. I think this book would work well as a IR book or a RA. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/learning-read-... This lesson plan from scholastic introduces nonfiction text to students. It allows students to see the differences between fiction and nonfiction. Which I think is important when first introducing a nonfiction book. (edited) 6y
LaGasseSam1996 ESOL strategy 5 is important when teaching nonfiction. There are new terms being introduced and they need to know the vocabulary to fully understand nonfiction text. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 UDL 2.1 is also used in this lesson plan. We need to help students make since of the new vocabulary. Fiction and nonfiction are very easy to confuse. If we show what makes fiction fake and what makes nonfiction not fake it may help them understand better. 6y

Who Was Dr. Seuss? | Janet Pascal

“Who was Dr. Seuss?” Is a B book written by Janet B. Pascal and illustrated by Nancy Harrison. I think this book would work well in an author study. This book is about the life of Theodor Seuss Geisel or better know as Dr. Seuss. This biography is kid friendly and shows students how one of their favorite authors came to be. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 The UDL I think would work the best is UDL 1.3 when used in the form of an author study. I think students would enjoy learning about Dr. Seuss just as much as they would enjoy making the information they received from this book into a poster, PowerPoint or any other media. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 ESOL 2 would work well in this. Having students broken up into groups to do an author study on Dr. Seuss. I think the students would enjoy working together and it allows the ESOL student to contribute without feeling left out. (edited) 6y
LaGasseSam1996 http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/author-study-impr... This lesson plan from ReadWriteThink has the students spilt into groups of 4. I think that would be great for ESOL students and they can each be creative with how they present their information. 6y
Edenmonet I love Dr. Seuss books! The lesson plan you have is so awesome, I‘ve never thought of doing an authors study like that. The lesson plan is good for developing students referencing and comparison skills! 6y

Pocket Poems | Bobbi Katz

Pocket poems is a book about, well, poems! This P book was selected by Bobbi Katz and illustrated by Marylin Hafner. This book is very interesting. You can pick out a poem at random and read it aloud to the class which is why I think this book would be an amazing RA book. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 This book would work well with UDL 2.1. This book has a lot of different poems inside it that cover a range of words. For example, if the word ‘trudge‘ is a vocabulary word you could read the poem “Call Me Polar Bear” in the book. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 ESOL 11 would work well in this context. The poems in this book give meaning to the text. Most of these poems are short so the words that are being used are there for their importance. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/calendar-activities/participat... I think this lesson plan would be great to use with both ESOL and English speaking students. The students creating their own poems would allow them to select the words and make those words have meaning in their context. 6y
DrSpalding I like the idea of having children walk around with poems in their pockets. You could have them share their poems while waiting in line for specials, lunch, recess… Your use of high-quality resources is appreciated. Keep using RWT! 6y

Where the Wild Things Are is written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak and has won the Caldecott medal. This modern fantasy book is about a little boy who is sent to his room because he was not behaving. His room grew into a forest to find out more you have to read the book! #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 Where the Wild Thing are is written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak and has won a Caldecott medal. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 UDL 7.1 would work well with this book. Max made a lot of choices on this own first to misbehave and then to leave the monsters. I think this book highlights that you always have a choice whether it be your behavior or your actions. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 https://growingbookbybook.com/where-the-wild-things-are-action-word-rompus/ This lesson plan takes learning new vocabulary and makes it fun! In Where the Wild Things Are they do a lot of ‘roaring‘ ‘rolling their eyes‘ and more having students act it out would be a fun way to learn that vocabulary. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 ESOL 17 would work with the lesson plan above. Before reading the story you can demonstrate what the student will do if they hear the word ‘roar‘ for example. The student will then connect the word with the action. 6y
DrSpalding This is a classic! You have many Caldecott medal award winning books. These images helps support all students in comprehension. I love the idea of having students roar as a part of an interactive read aloud. 6y

LaGasseSam1996 The ESOL strategy I like best with this book is 4. You can link a lot of this book with things students already know; like cupcakes or counting. 6y
