Perfect antidote to a cold, dreary day.
I needed something bright and cheery, and this is hitting the spot (Winnie approves too, despite evidence to the contrary)

I loved this book so, so, SO much. It is smart, funny, sexy - the whole package. There were at least ten passages I stopped to highlight (which I never do), because they were just so insightful/intelligent/hilarious. I‘m going to have a real book hangover after finishing this - suggestions welcome!!
YESSSS 😍😍 this book is so good that I am torn between racing through it and moving as slowly as possible in order to savor it
SQUEE. Just in time for the holidays! Can't wait to read this one 😍
50 pages in and already a reference to one of my all time favorite books (I Capture the Castle, fyi). Great start to my first ever #BOTM pick :)
Whoa (in a good way!). I loved this one - it has the propulsion of a good thriller, but with less of a focus on the whodunnit than on the rich inner lives of the main characters. It managed to portray almost everyone with empathy, and it's a feat of the author's skill that I was more pulled along by the mystery of who, exactly, Ruth was than the mystery of who the killer was.
Seeing all of the love for #BOTM on Litsy has inspired me to take the plunge on a three month subscription, and I couldn't be more excited about my first choice! I even went for the next-day shipping - now, to track its shipping progress expectantly 👀
I was a book nerd long before this came into my life, but it's a book I have returned to over and over. I'm hardly the first young nerd to over-identify with Turtle, but it meant so much to read a book that trusted - and celebrated! - young readers' intelligence. #LitsyRiotLive
It's been a really difficult couple of days - a lot (A LOT) of crying, not a lot of sleep or food. The only times I've really felt like myself are when I've been curled up in bed with this magical book. It completely took me out of my head and into a magical, historic Russia. It is entirely transporting in the best way, reminding me of The Night Circus, the Grisha series, and Edith Pattou's East. At least books still have magic #hereforthebooks
Yes yes yes yes YES.
Apologies, but this book makes me semi-incoherent. I'll admit I jumped on after the Booker hype, but it was even better than I thought I could be. This is one of the best books I've read in the past few years, and it has one of the best opening paragraphs I've ever read, period. Paul Beatty is a genius and I can't wait to dive into his backlist.
My pick for #recommendsday is my most recent read: A BOLLYWOOD AFFAIR. It was my first ever ~romance~, and while - I won't lie - it made me blush a little, I really enjoyed. Sweet and charming and perfect for a cold, blustery day.
This is such a lovely, sweet book. A bit of tonal whiplash following Tana French, but equally great. If you don't have plans for this weekend, I would highly recommend getting yourself a copy and curling up, preferably in front of a fire/by the heater, with the warm beverage of your choice. If you love heartwarming stories about unlikely friendships, a la The Elegance of the Hedgehog, etc., this one's for you.
The first really chilly week of autumn felt like the perfect time to start my first Tana French, and I am looooooooving it so far. It's taut, compelling, and super well written - if only it wasn't such a busy week at school, I probably would have finished it in a sitting or two. I can't wait to read her backlist - which one should I read first? Other comps much appreciated too 😍
Oh, WOW. This book is so, so, SO good. I'm not usually a big biography reader, but this is for sure one of the best books I've read this year. Franklin made such interesting connections between the two poles of Jacksons's major writings - domestic comedy and suspense - and she wrote about Jackson with deep empathy without canonizing her. Even if you're not a fan, read this - it is probably the best biography of a writer that I have ever read.
New Colin Dickey and a pumpkin spice latte makes me feel like fall is in the air, even when it's 81 degrees outside. Best time of the year!
This made me so eager for fall.
Celebrating (finally) being 100% moved in to my apartment for this semester by curling up with this. It is so sharp and so good - Shirley Jackson is one of my favorite writers, and this is really giving me new insight into her work. This is the perfect post-move in treat.
This one was so interesting, and I can't wait until it's published in September because I NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS BOOK. It's funny and sharp and well written, but you kind of feel uneasy the whole time you read it and then it takes a sharp nosedive into "what the hell? NO!" I don't know if *enjoy* is the right word for this book, but it made me laugh and it made me go "huh?" and I'm still thinking about it now.
This book has its problems - an overabundance of middle-aged malaise, an obvious central metaphor - and it could have used a tighter edit, but I truly enjoyed it. It's a perfect big fall book to get wrapped up in, and it made me laugh on multiple occasions.
The perfect read-in-one-sitting-on-a-late-summer-afternoon treat. Bonus points for a lady mathematician, something this computer science/applied math major appreciated and would love to see more of.
Still enjoying HERE I AM, but some passages are beginning to feel self-indulgent and bloated (I could have lived without this ten page description of the world's follow up to a (fictional, spoilery) major event, for example). I think that JSF is a gifted writer, but I would have been curious to see what the 300 page version of this novel looked like.
Man, this one is a chunkster (571 pages!), but I really like it so far! It's...funny? This is my first experience with JSF so I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but so far it's all been a pleasant surprise.
I thought I'd give some love to one of my all-time faves for #recommendsday. I've probably read this book seven or eight times, and it never fails to cheer me up. It's sweet and funny, with something for everyone: musical theater references, sports references, a cute touch of romance, and laugh-out-loud writing. It captures what being fifteen is like without ever condescending, and it is just such a lovely, heartwarming book.
I can already tell that this is a book I'll be thinking about for a long time. It is so good on the nuances of friendships between women, and how you can feel intense love for someone while still letting jealousy summer under the surface of your relationship. Real relationships are complicated and messy, and this book digs into that more realistically than almost any other novel I've read.

I read this at the pool today and it was PERFECT for that. I snort-laughed more times than I care to admit.
