The Harafish | Naguib Mahfouz

I loved this book. The Harafish is Mahfouz's depiction of the lives of Cairo's rabble. Following the members of a single family through many generations of living in the city. This book depicts the world that can be contained in the within the alleys of single city. Expansive and insightful, this is a great book for anyone interested in the downtrodden or the people of Egypt.

Marcovaldo is such an amazing character. His unique perspective on life is always welcome and the structure of the book, broken up into short stories arranged by season, is fantastic. One of the only books that can always cheer me up.

BookBrunchRepeat I didn't realize he'd written so many books! 8y

The Alchemyst | Michael Scott

Combines myth, magic, history, and modern life for a really fun YA read. I enjoyed the concept of historic figures becoming immortal and drifting through time with assumed identities. If you enjoy YA I would definitely recommend.

The Sirens of Titan | Kurt Vonnegut

Blew my mind in high school and continues to impress today. In this book, Vonnegut follows the interplanetary adventures of the richest man in future America. Along the way he also clues the reader in on the meaning of life on Earth and our role in the universe. #sciencefiction #satire

Italian Folktales | Italo Calvino
post image
Pickpick

Wonderful for anyone who likes folktales! Calvino has created a comprehensive tome here on the varied folktales of Italy. It's great if you want to read a new story each night, read one story over and over, or leave it by your bed to pick up whenever you need something new.

Another great story from Salman Rushdie! This one is silly, fun, and full of puns. Definitely could be read in a sitting if you've got the time, and it will probably remind you of Alice in Wonderland... If she were transplanted to the heart of India.

Kammbia1 I just bought this one today. I've been wanting to read a Rushdie novel for years. This one was recommended to me recently. 7y

This is where my desire to keep goats started. Kessler describes his journey into the world of goats and cheese so poetically that it is hard not to yearn for that life. Honestly, I'm hesitant to reread it now in fear that I might go out and get a new fury friend.

Planetwalker | John Francis

I met this author at an environment summit and got his book the very next day. The way it is written, along with the author's interspersed watercolors, makes it feel like you're reading his personal journal. On top of that, Francis' motivation to the environment is inspirational.

Enchantress of Florence | Salman Rushdie

This was my first Rushdie novel and even though it isn't really representative of his normal style, I will always appreciate that it introduced me to one of my favorite authors. In this book, set between Renaissance Italy and Mughal India, Rushdie combines history and myth to show how we can use stories to sculpt the world around us.

The Hakawati | Rabih Alameddine

An all-time favorite! Alameddine stacks fairytales on top of a Lebanese family drama to create something really magical. Rereading it always makes me want to pull out a copy of The Arabian Nights.
