Started the July #buddyread book this weekend. Enjoyed it this Sunday with spaghetti aglio olio peperoncini and a glass of red wine for dinner. So far I like that book very much and I don't see why it gets so many negative reviews. I find it hard to put down, to be honest.

Thought I was in for something very light and distracting. Didn‘t expect much when I picked it up but it was surprisingly good! Yes there was that one or other cliché… but overall this was a compelling read. And the ending was kinda mind-blowing. Just when you think the story‘s over, there comes the epilogue . Wow! Left me open-mouthed and thinking…

Jinjer My jaw is still on the floor over that ending! 😳Very good book I thought. Enjoyed it a lot. 7y
Heidi2 Right @Jinjer ??? Glad you felt the same way about it as I. Couldn't stop thinking about it and seeing that scene before my eyes for a while. 7y

Hot-tempered boy meets selfish girl, they fall in love, girl marries another. Boy becomes bitter, destructive, abusive, vicious. That‘s how I saw that book, which surely is the unpopular opinion. Sorry. Maybe, listening to the audiobook wasn‘t a good idea. It‘s one thing to read people constantly throwing insults at each other but another to hear it spoken out loud. Everyone hated everyone. Some good moments but not enough to like it thoroughly.

Jinjer Well fucc that review makes me want to read it! Stacked! 8y
Heidi2 @jinjer Just take into consideration that if you thought the language and way of talking in Pride & Prejudice was a bit much, this book might be even weirder to you. 8y

Continuing with the classics. This one I have in my TBR stack for ages. Bought the paperback in a cute little book shop in Barnes (London) some years ago. Since I'm an audiobook addict now, I'm listening, not reading. But you can never go wrong with such a book gracing your shelf 😉 However... I'm 5 chapters in and not yet fully convinced that I'll love it. Need more time...

Caroline2 I loved it but it's dark and gloomy and not your usual classical romance! 8y
Chasing_Pages I started a while ago and just wasn't getting into it so I bailed for a while. I will try again soon. Hope it goes better for you. 8y
Heidi2 @Caroline2 I'm usually all for dark and gloomy and it doesn't have to be lovey-dovey romance, so I still have hope. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that it hasn't fully grasped me. Hope that will change. 8y
Heidi2 @Chasing-Pages Thanks. Sometimes it helps to put a book down and pick it up at a later time. Hope it gets better for you too if you try again. 8y
Caroline2 Yeah I remember it took me while to get in to it too; it gets much better! But I think it's a marmite book, you love it or hate it!!! 😆 8y

I'm one of *those* people: never read an Agatha Christie book before & know nothing about who's "the best Poirot" in movie/tv. All I know is that a remake coms to theatres in Nov! But before I HAD to check out the book. Thoroughly enjoyed the (German) #audiobook. Loved the old-fashioned way of telling a good crime story. No blood and horror needed. Loved the character of Poirot and his wit and humor very much!

Jinjer I love Poirot SO much!!! But only David Suchet. 8y
Heidi2 @Jinjer I can see that this might be something like "Margaret Rutherford is the ONLY possible Miss Marple" (I could agree to that). But look... That series in which David Suchet starred in... I thin it wasn't even aired over here. Not even S., who's better than me in knowing such things, knows him. That's why I don't really care who will play Poirot in a remake. I also don't mind remakes of such never aging classical stories IF they are well done. 8y
Heidi2 @Jinjer There are new generations of people who can't be bothered to view very old movies and tv shows. Why not bringing fresh versions on. As long as the remake respects the original material, all is good. 8y
Jinjer No. 8y

I've finished book #3 and #4 of the Cemetery Of Forgotten Books series but it looks as if the English translation of book #4 is not yet out in the UK/US?!? Can't find it. Whatever the case: do youself a favor and check out this series. If you've loved The Shadow of the Wind, you'll love the others. If you don't know that one, CHANGE THAT! Zafón is a GENIUS! These beautiful books are among my absolute faves now.

I hardly ever re-read books. This one was an exception since I‘m reading my way through the Cemetery Of The Forgotten Books series. It‘s been 8 years since I read the printed book. Became one of my faves. Now I‘ve checked the audiobook and fell in love with it even more. Zafón is a MASTER with words and creating rich, detailed stories and characters and magic. If you haven‘t read that book yet, what are you waiting for? Now on to the next.

Loved that book!!! In contrast to several others I loved the mystical elements very much. Carlos Ruiz Zafón has a way to write that - to me anyway - is magical. Eleanor, 30, accountant, single, no friends, lonely, speaks in a very formal way, has no social skills, irritates people with her strange way of communicating. An odd-ball. But there‘s a reason for this, based in her childhood, that unfolds very slowly. Along with what‘s up with “Mommy” and how an unexpected encounter helps her coming out of her shell. A good book that has some lengths and an ending that came too quick. Still liked it a lot.

I'm well aware that I'm in the minority but... that was not 'my' book. I can't join in with all the others who loved it so much. Started out good with the friendship of the boys and what awful thing Amir did to poor Hassan, but fell flat in part two to a point where I thought it was even boring. Never got really close to characters, hardly ever got emotionally involved. For whatever reason. Sorry. German #audiobook version was narrated VERY well.

Since my dear friend @Jinjer recommended this one, I started today. #germanedition #audiobook from #audible. Halfway through, so far so good. Really unnerving at times 😑

Jinjer I can imagine the audio book is even MORE nerve wracking!!! So is it different actors / voices for each character? 8y
Heidi2 @Jinjer Only one narrator. A good narrator can add so much to a story! Have never felt like listening instead of reading is less intensive. If the narrator is good,it doesn't need several narrators to speak several characters. I myself prefer only one. If they are capable, they give all characters their own voice without being confusing. The narrator of THIS book is AWESOME. She's an experienced stage/film actress & def. ADDS to the suspense. 8y
Jinjer So when she's playing the parts of a child does she talk in a high pitch baby voice and then a deep voice for a man? 8y
Heidi2 @Jinjer Not so drastically! That'd be annoying I guess Or as if you're reading for a little kid. No, a good narrator is able to change their voice in a subtle way but just enough so that you hear the difference. (edited) 8y

So I bought this very cute #germanedition mini hardcover of #prideandprejudice recently, but now decided to listen to the #audiobook nevertheless. But isn't that a beautiful little book? Interestingly, this edition (2014) and the audiobook (2005) are different translations. Not sure yet which I like better. As for the book so far: ITS BRILLIANT! I'm in love! ❤️ Anyone surprised? 😉 #janeausten

Jinjer The book is lovely! So you're not struggling with 18th century dialogue at all? That's what my problem was. Not the story itself. I was fine with the story. Good humor in it with the overly dramatic mother and all. My problem was in trying to decipher the dialogue where one sentence is practically a full paragraph. My mind didn't want to deal with that.😂 8y
Heidi2 @Jinjer That was, in all seriousness, one of the most wonderful, beautiful, brilliant, books I've ever had the pleasure to read. Perfect language. Perfect dialogue. Perfect characters. Hope that answers your question. 8y

Shortly after I stared reading I said that all characters were unlikable. Gotta change that now. First of all they are human. I think Boyle portrayed typical human nature quite well. Kinda could see the places where they came from, even the irritating ones. Some characters were more featured than others, would've liked a bit more insight into the others as well, found them a bit underwritten. Overall a good book! Some may hate the ending. Not me.

Jinjer @mrbook was just discussing this book with his book club! I wonder how this book about terrenauts differs from the one about argonauts. I don't know what either word means, obviously. 8y
Heidi2 @Jinjer Terranauts in the novel are a bunch of scientists who live in a huge 3-acre sealed glass-compound in Arizona A terrarium, if you will, that includes five biomes: rainforest, savanna, desert, ocean, and marsh. They live there for 2 years, completely isolated from the outside world. Story is based on real events, actually.
Don't know what argonaut means.
8y
Jinjer Interesting! Mom & I both remember hearing about the real place. I think she and Dad still lived in Arizona when it was being built. Biosphere 2. Had to google to see WHERE in Arizona it is. Oracle down by Tucson. It's still there and it looks like you can tour it now. It's owned by university of Arizona. I hope it's a good book. 🤞 8y
Jinjer argonauts were a band of heroes in Greek mythology! Did neither of us learn anything in school????😳 8y
Heidi2 Yeah, I googled the place and saw the pics, but I didn't want to dive deeper into information about it. I'm not sure how close the author stays to the real events and I don't want to get spoiled. I'll read more about it once I'm done (which will happen one of these days).

“Gil Coleman looked down from the first-floor window of the bookshop and saw his dead wife standing on the pavement below.” is what I'd call a very promising first sentence". Thought it was very well written and became more and more of a page-turner (at least figuratively speaking because I listened to the #audiobook). Sinister and with the one or other twist and turn, I definitely recommend this book.
