The title refers to a Persian tale of a mythical stone that absorbs the pain of others. In this case, the “stone” is a comatose Afghan man whose wife confesses her secret thoughts to her unresponsive husband as war rages around them. Although I disliked the ending, I gave the book a good rating because the story has really stayed with me. #WorldTour @JulietteGF

Adventures_of_a_French_Reader Yes, the end is very violent!!! But not every story has a happy end, and I feel like it is sooo close to the reality... 6y
Kimzey @JulietteGF I agree! It did give me a window into that reality, which I, otherwise, would never have known. 6y

For July, I wanted to read an author from Angola for my #worldtour challenge. I picked this book, and I'm not disappointed. We follow Ndalu, a twelve year old boy. The story takes place in 1990, when the Cuban presence is leaving Angola. It was a very interesting and informative book. A short read.

I highly recommend this book, unfortunately not translated into English (but available in French and in German). The main character decides to go back in the neighborhood of his childhood after the death of his mother to discover the truth about his past. A very interesting read. I read it for my #worldtour challenge for Algeria.

Twenty years after the second world war, an Italian general is sent to Albania to recover the bodies of the fallen soldiers. I really liked the writing of Ismail Kadare. I highly recommend this book. I read it for my #WorldTour challenge. The next book for this challenge is going to be one by Boualem Sansal, an Algerian writer.

A Dry White Season | Andre Brink

It's an excellent book. Published in 1979, it was forbidden in the author's country, South Africa. It denounces the racist, and violent system of the Apartheid. It also offers some thoughts on justice, and on what it can take to achieve it. A must read! I've read it for my #WorldTour challenge. The country featured in January is South Africa ;)

MrBook 😎👌🏻🙌🏻! What's the world tour one entail? 8y
Adventures_of_a_French_Reader @MrBook I began it last month, each month I had to my TBR list a book by an author from a foreign country. It's going to be a long long challenge, but it allows me to discover new authors and cultures. For the schedule of countries, use #WorldTour ;) 8y
MrBook Ahh! Nice 😊👍🏻! 8y

Kimzey I've started The Patience Stone, but I'm a little behind on the World Tour. 8y
Adventures_of_a_French_Reader @Kimzey How do you find the book so far? It's a short book, but I read it quite slowly, there is a lot to swallow. 8y
Kimzey @JulietteGF I'm liking it so far on audiobook. I listened to the first hour while out walking. Good thing I was on an outdoor track and not in the street because I was not even aware of my surroundings! 😉 I was completely present in the room with the woman and her comatose husband. 8y

Here is the schedule for the challenge #WorldTour
Rules: read each month an author from the featured country. The books from the column "my choice" are just examples, you don't have to choose the same ones. Use #WorldTour on your reviews ;) @Kimzey
I also created a hashtag on Instagram: #LiteraryWorldTourChallenge ?

Kimzey @JulietteGF Thank you! This is great! I'm pulling my reading lists together. I can't wait to look up your selections! 📚🌎🌍🌏 8y
Adventures_of_a_French_Reader @Kimzey You're welcome, honestly some countries asked for a lot of research. Andorra and Armenia were hard... For Armenia, I finally chose an author from the Armenian diaspora. But I will keep note of the books you pick for future readings. I'm really looking forward to your review 8y
