Pickpick

While it feels a touch too long, it never overstays its welcome. Amy is underserved in film versions, I like how human she‘s portrayed in the book. (Same with Laurie in the recent film - he‘s so much more charming in the book!) But Jo will always be the icon. #WomenReading

TheAromaofBooks When I reread this recently, I realized I had forgotten how while Jo does come through as the main character, the other sisters definitely have plenty of page time & chapters focused just on them. 4y

I first read this as a child so it‘s been awhile. Reading it again now for the #WomenReading book club. I‘m a third in and so far the recent film adaptation has proven to be quite faithful, altho Beth is much more of a presence....and for some reason I always thought she was the youngest, not Amy?! 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

bibliobard OMG I may have to drop out of this book club — I keep forgetting to read the books 😂 4y
WriterAtHeart I love "Little Women"! I read it for the first time a few months ago and just fell in love! 4y

I committed (I DNFed this the first time I tried it last year). I didn‘t love it largely bc of the olde English but didn‘t hate it — I think it could have been streamlined but certainly considering the time it was published, it was something to behold. #WomenReading

Catherine_Willoughby I love the Journal /newspaper format & olde English ❤ 4y

I don‘t usually do this but I just couldn‘t muscle through. Not sure what tone the author was going for here — it felt far too light & carefree for such a grisly plot.

BeansPage I felt the same way girl. 5y
jessinikkip You know I'm on like page 3 and y'all arent making me have much hope for this book 😄😄 5y
Melismatic @jessinikkip 🥴 I gave it to chapter six and just couldn‘t continue. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y

jessinikkip @Melismatic I will keep going then and we'll see where I end up at 5y
Julie548 I finished it...it wasn‘t the worst thing I‘ve ever read. It had a bit of a twist at the end. 5y
bibliobard @jessinikkip @Melismatic I got pretty far — I can‘t remember exactly where I stopped but it was a decent way through and something happened that I just couldn‘t stand. I think you put it well when you say it is the tone! Cause honestly it isn‘t that different from certain Criminal Minds episodes or SVU so I have been trying to figure out what bothered me! 5y
jessinikkip @Julie548 That helps, knowing theres something coming up different. Like I said, I'm just getting going, I'm behind lol So I cant say much yet. I might like it, might not, ya know 5y

Ok. I really did try to give this one a shot, I watch shows like Criminal Minds, so I tried to come at it from that angle—but then it just kept at the rape, violence and gore and I just couldn‘t any more. This book is too gruesome and feels unnecessarily insensitive to gender and race — I quit while the Chef was recounting one of his “meals.” Not a good read, and frankly disturbing...and I read Lolita once!#WomenReading

BeansPage Totally agree sweetheart, although I did not get that far into the book. 5y
Melismatic @Shakespearience @SumisBooks I think I‘m with both of you, unfortunately. I got through a few chapters but I‘m not really sure I can appreciate this type of tone. It feels pretty misogynistic and insensitive. 5y
bibliobard @Melismatic Right?! That is exactly how I felt — I pushed through pretty far thinking I could overlook it but eventually it was just too much! 5y

jessinikkip I keep meaning to start it but my new book journal keeps distracting me! I promise I'll read it before the end of the month! 5y
Julie548 I finished it this morning. It gets a little better as it goes on - makes more sense anyway. There are several things that could be done to make it better though!! 5y

I finally got to read this today. I know I cut it short, but grad. school is done for the semester! So more free time reading!

Mixed feelings about it, but excited to talk about the book.

I'd probably give it a 6/10. The protagonist mainly got on my nerves and I honestly think if you are going to write a story with multiple POVs you should do so from the start -- not introduce it halfway through the book. On the plus side, the lore/magic tied to the mermaids was a neat concept and the mermaid society is mostly ruled by women so that was cool. #WomenReading

Well, I was on track to finish this for #womenreading today. I said WAS. My #LazyCoworker lay beside me in the bed earlier for a nap, threw his head back and headbutted me right over my eye. Now I think I'll just have a migraine all day. I really need to fire this guy

jessinikkip @Hooked_on_books I know. For all the crying he does if he walks into something (He can barely see) youd think his skull was paper. Let me tell you, it 10000% is not 5y

One down! Thanks for the read @SumisBooks ! I enjoyed this more as it went on — I struggled to get into it at first because I found Isla pretty irritating. But her growth as a character made her much more endearing as time went on.🧜🏻‍♀️🥰 Can‘t wait to chat about it with you all! #WomenReading
