The narrator of this book, a boy named Odie, is often requested to tell his stories. He tells good windigo and #ghoststory.

A Study in Scarlet | Arthur Conan Doyle

Pickpick

I did not love the fantastical — really not historically accurate — look at the 19th century Mormon West, but the rest of this book was exquisite. This is my first time reading one of his books, not just short stories or watching adaptations, and I‘m coming back for more! 🔎 #scarathlon #teamslaughter #scaryscavengerhunt #whereacharacterdies

rwmg I did wonder how based on reality that section was. I suppose forced marriages did happen as we hear about them occurring in polygynous communities in America even nowadays. 5y
Linsy @rwmg It‘s hard to know without a written record, but I do know that it was quite a different polygamous community from the ones we hear about on the news, and that not everyone in the community participated. It was supposed to be a protection for women without men, but well, we all know how awry things that start out that way can go. But I‘ve studied this history and Doyle‘s version is definitely very sensational and in some places just made up. (edited) 5y
Linsy @rwmg Which I‘m not blaming him for. I‘m sure descriptions of secret societies and religious orders I know nothing about are often sensationalized as well, as we know groups of native peoples have been exposed to so much. Especially back then. They weren‘t so concerned with being as politically correct as we are, to say the least. (edited) 5y

Finished this tonight! Loved the premise, but I felt let down by this book by the end. The magic was cool but the plot played out like a pretty mediocre murder mystery story. Now, onto Dracula...

BeansPage okay so I'm going to give you two points for this one. 1pt for the book and 1pt for the post. Does that sound right? 🧟‍♀️ 5y
