This really lovely book is by a woman who has been a shepherdess for over 20 years focusing on pastoralism in Vermont. It‘s meditative and delves into her deep connection with the land. It reminds me totally of Raising Hare. I loved it.

Pickpick

Diana Brewer isn‘t lying safely in her bed where she belongs. Instead she lies in a hayfield, circled by vultures, discovered by a local farmer.

How quickly a girl becomes a ghost. How quickly a town of friendly, familiar faces becomes a town of suspects, a place of fear and paranoia.

Someone in Fairhill did this. Everyone wants answers

This was an amusing mystery in which the very accomplished detective and the MC, the new assistant, head to Vermont to see if a wealthy matriarch actually did commit suicide as the police had ruled, or if she had been murdered. I might continue the series (but I think the Finlay Donovan hapless detective books are better)…. Mostly because the Poirot-style ending reveal just went on way too long.

Pickpick

A few days after going to the Alison Bechdel exhibition in Basel, I found this one in our local library! So I just had to get it and it was so good! Even though familiar with the Bechdel Test, this was my first book to read. I love her art style, so many details! Love the humor, but also the depth. From now on I'm only going to use the word Schmamazon for the big A 😂

One thing I love about Alison‘s books are the drawings. For example, City Hall is perfectly captured here. I can‘t tell you how many times I‘ve walked up and down those stairs during my many years of working there and when Bernie was Mayor the lights in the building were always lit up. This book covers many topics - goat rearing, politics, polyamory (which made me chuckle), Alison‘s constant questioning and concerns. It was a delight.

Suet624 I appreciate how she represents Vermont. 1mo

Jeg I‘m not a graphic novel fan but I do love hers. Back when she was starting off and possibly before people were selling their original drawings we asked her if we could buy one. We did , it depicts the characters in her first novel. 1mo

2.5⭐• true crime inspired fiction • an atmospheric Vermont setting • dark history • ghostwriting • child abuse • single POV•
While the story draws from the real atrocities at St. Joseph's Orphanage in Burlington, VT—which gives it important historical weight—the execution was painfully slow & ultimately a chore to get through. Additionally, I found it a drag to be inside the MC‘s head—like she was trying to pull me down into her pit of depression.

AudiobookingWithLeah 🎙️The narration was excellent and featured a small, full cast. While the story has just one point of view, they used multiple voice actors rather than having the main narrator handle all the character voices. 2mo

I picked this for the title, figuring it would be funny and fun, and I suspected it would be from the detective‘s perspective. Instead, it‘s from the assistant‘s perspective, basically not funny at all, and the ending in particular is so derivative of Agatha Christie I almost started calling the detective Poirot. Apparently this is the start of a series, which I will not be reading.

Copper agrees to pose with a book! He‘s been demanding today, guess he is excited for Football 🏈 Sunday? This book had a few good moments and some head-scratchers. Perhaps I need to actually be familiar with Frost‘s poetry and philosophy.
