The Snowy Day | Ezra Jack Keats
post image
Pickpick

The Snowy Day is a fiction book written and illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats. This Caldecott Award winning book is about a boy who plays in the snow on a snowy day and would be great for storytelling (S). https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/snowy-day-exte... links to a website that has an amazing hands on extension activity for this lesson. #UCFLAE3414FL17

laurie_jayy UDL “1.1 Offer ways of customizing the display of information.” I can do this story as Read Aloud (RA), Storyteling (S), or even a Readers Theatre (RT) which are all different ways of displaying information. EL 17 “Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions “ This can be easily done through a read aloud (RA) by reading with different gestures and facial expressions. 7y

Jack and the Beanstalk is a TL adapted by Jane Jerrard and illustrated by Susan Spellman. A classic story featuring Jack, a poor boy, who goes out to sell his cow and instead trades her for 5 magic beans. When his mother discovers what he has done she throws the beans out the window- and they grow into a giant beanstalk! He climbs it and finds giants! This book is perfect for RT utilizing UDL strategy 1.2 to provide alternative auditory info.

JordanD I would also use EL strategy 42 to have students arrange a timeline of events that occurred in the story from first to last. http://www.myfreshplans.com/2010/05/jack-and-the-beanstalk-lesson-plans/ this link leads to a resource in how to use the story in most any subject. #ucflae3414fl17 7y
DrSpalding A wonderful readers theater selection and also a great choice for storytelling. Being able to identify the key events in the story in a sequence is a standard that children must accomplish. Good choice. 7y
JordanD @DrSpalding I didn't even consider it for storytelling! You are right this would be a fun, classic storytelling! 7y

The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a MF Newbery Award Winner by Kelly Barnhill. Kelly tells a story rich in magic and mystery about an enmagicked girl, the Bog, a witch, a mad woman, and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon. With multidimensional characters and a plot that keeps you guessing- this book is a must read! Best used as a LC, I would use ESOL strategy 1 to teach questioning for clarification and UDL 3.3 to guide the student through the text.

JordanD https://www.workman.com/products/the-girl-who-drank-the-moon this link will take you to Workmans publishing site where you can learn more about Kelly Barnhill, read an excerpt of her book and look at a readers guide of questions to use while reading. #ucflae3414fl17 7y
DrSpalding It's a wonderful book! A peer in another section made one of the paper birds using origami! So awesome! 7y
DrSpalding Love the quote! 7y
JordanD @DrSpalding I love that! Paper and birds are such big symbols in this book! It reminded me of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes and the hope that the paper birds represent! 7y
DrSpalding Yes!!!!! Excellent text to text connection @JordanD 🙂 7y

In this P book by Ludwig Bemelmans we are introduced to the feisty Madeline. She may be the smallest of the girls in two straight lines, but she's not scared of tigers or mice and she loves snow and ice! Bet used as a RA this rhythmic picture book is fun for young readers and beyond! https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?a=1&tid=4263 this website has links to things like lesson plans and to Madeline's very own website! I would use EL strategy 10

JordanD And UDL 2.1 to clarify vocabulary students are unfamiliar with. Caldecott Honor book #ucflae3414fl17 (edited) 7y
LaurenR I use to watch this as a kid when it was a cartoon! I wasn't aware there was a book. Now I'm excited to check it out, I don't even remember what any of it was about but I had to wake up early on the weekend just to see it ! 7y
ashley.v I love this story! I used to watch it as a kid. I knew there was a book, but I‘ve never read it. This is an excellent book for young girls to read. 7y
DrSpalding Lovely image Jordan. Great idea to clarify vocabulary being that some of it is French! 7y
JordanD Thank you! I look forward to using this one in my classroom. 7y

Bobbi Gibb loves to run and when she sees the Boston Marathon runners for the first time she knows she has to be a part of it. This book with vivid watercolors that accompany narration and couplets is a great way to get students into biographies. Best used as a DR, this B about perseverance through adversity is a great addition to any classroom. I would use UDL strategy 2.2 to clarify couplets and narration and EL 4 to link prior knowledge

JordanD #ucflae3414fl17 http://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2017/04/the-girl-who-ran-bobbi-gibb-the-fir... and this is a class resource page that shows how the text can be used in many applications. I like the idea of running and then writing! 7y
