#CoverStories #Barn Spin wool , make cheese, make bricks ,cure bacon! My grandparents could make almost everything, I have always been interested in the old folkways. If we keep going the dystopian way we all may need books like this !

sarahbarnes I‘ve always been interested too. And agreed. 1w
Eggs I can totally relate - my parents were born in 1910 and 1913, and were old-school self-sufficient! 1w
Leftcoastzen @Eggs people didn‘t have much of a choice back then , no money to pay for it even if you could find people to do it 1w

Eggs @Leftcoastzen I used to make soap, candles, bread, yogurt, clothing, slipper socks, scarves, quilts, grow gardens, can/preserve and more. But it‘s really rough on the hands and wrists!!! 7d
Leftcoastzen @Eggs Wow , that‘s amazing ! Also, that‘s why people got worn out at a younger age . There wasn‘t alternatives . I helped my grandmother can , and we made butter together in a large jar size churn . Even she said , bread takes too much time ! I‘ll just buy it at the grocery store. Once it was readily available!😁 (edited) 7d
Eggs @Leftcoastzen Awesome 👏🏻 6d

"The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it.”

Fern and her mom live at a sustainable farm in upstate NY, with a leader named “Dr Ben”, a stern ruler. It‘s the only home she can remember bc she was little when they moved there. When Mom absconds with her and drives to a California beach town saying that Ben is dangerous, Fern is furious and makes it her mission to get back “home”…

So heartful and well written🩵🩵

I cannot say enough good about this book. So charming, so fun, so narrative, so warm, inviting and yet it challenges you as well. I look forward to coming back to this one!

marleed Same. I usually keep my 5* reads because it‘s such a fun collection to peruse and reconsider. But I gave this book away because I knew a perfect reader for it. Food prep isn‘t among my favorite pastimes so I‘d suck at sourcing local foods but I think about it often - particularly when I peel a banana. 9mo

A great introduction into a rapidly expanding field of research and application. Who knew that plants NEEDED bacteria, fungi, nematodes, and protozoa to thrive? Time to set aside all the dangerous chemicals and team up with the soil food web. Nobody ever fertilized an old growth forest.s

The pace was slow but the characters and atmosphere were fantastic. The plot was unique with the cult and underlying feelings of danger.

Fantastic listen. Should be required reading.
Ritchie is an Enviro Scientist and Data Analyst with a passion for writing. She combines her skills to deliver a clear eyed state of the climate that cuts through sensationalist headlines and sits in the facts with a fresh, hopeful perspective. She never sugar coats things, where the situation is bad she tells you just how bad it is, but she also shows how we can, and often are, making things better.

TheKidUpstairs Highly recommended. Especially if you, like me, can feel overwhelmed by the climate crisis. Yes, things are bad, and yes, they could get worse, but there is also real reason to hope that things can get better and work towards that end. Ritchie gives clear information on what actions can make the biggest impact, where to stress more, and where to perhaps stress a little less. 11mo

For the first time in a while, I feel fully engaged in and excited about everything I'm reading!

Audio - Not the End of the World by Hannah Ritchie. I feel like this should be required reading. I'm going to need to buy a copy to revisit!

Physical - All the Birds, Singing by Evie Wyld. I don't think there's an author out there who writes such wonderfully messy women. I'm loving it.
