It‘s time for my fall wrap-up. I was a #rebelreader and chose books out of their season and order. So by the beginning of October, I only had two left to finish. I read the #comicorgraphicnovel prompt. Then I realized that a book I read in February worked for #soldiersstory. So, that‘s my story and I‘m sticking to it!

Thanks to my lovely co-hosts and all you participants for a great #booked2019 challenge year! 😘😘

Cinfhen Woohoo 🎉 well done my favorite #RebelReader 🙌🏻😁 5y

Yay! I used this for #soldiersstory for #booked2019 (which is perhaps a bit of a stretch, but it is part of the story), so I have finally completed #booked2019!!
This book was okay. A quick read but predictable and the pacing felt off. I liked the premise but It turned into a definite “dude bro” book about halfway through where the MC started physically fighting people and fending off potential murders left and right.

alisiakae A bit of a stretch is just fine...congrats on finishing #booked2019! 🎉👏🏼 5y
AnneFindsJoy Congrats 🎉 5y

A stunning depiction of the horrors of war, I thought this was beautifully written. Can one really come back from something like that and live a normal life? It's so hard to imagine. I wasn't too keen on the romance but the rest will stay with me long after the last page.

This was good and the story held my attention. Was surprised by the ending! And although part of war and necessary since this is the story of an enlisted army doctor, my queasy stomach could have done without the detailed description of battle injuries!

A wonderful and uplifting story of survival and perseverance against all odds! Much of this book addresses Craig's life upon returning to civilian life and dealing with PTSD after being in an active warzone in Afghanistan. Great for those who may be skittish about details regarding the loss of life in combat zones. #Booked2019 #SoldiersStory #Autumn @cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

Cinfhen Sounds like a lovely choice💙 5y
IamIamIam @Cinfhen It was just my speed. It was informative without ripping my heart out! He did publish a version for mature readers if anyone would prefer that but there were a few incidents where I was really glad I was reading this edition. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great review and honest advice on the topic. Thanks! 5y

*This book is one I was absolutely not looking forward to reading. On the recommendation of a great friend, I decided to give it a go. This book is utterly fantastic. It is an older book (2012), so I‘m sure loads of Littens have already read it, so I‘ll make it brief. Three points: a) Fountain has his thumb firmly on the pulse of American culture; b) he is a wordsmith of the highest caliber—I learned ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (Cont.) several new ones; c) he is writing about a particular American city (Dallas) where I lived for about a decade, and he was so spot-on that I cringed internally at certain scenes—they were too (unfortunately) familiar. All the action takes place in a day (although some of Billy‘s thoughts are of past events) and this just heightens the “you are here” ambience of the book. I loved it. ♥️ (edited) 5y
Theaelizabet I loved this book for all the reasons you give and certainly meant to read more by him, which I didn‘t. I need to cycle back around to him. 5y
CarolynM I'm sold. Stacked🙂 5y

gradcat @Theaelizabet You know, I checked into his other books, precisely because I found him so good. He seems to publish a book every six years. The first, “Brief Encounters with Che Guevara” (2006), is short stories, albeit loosely connected ones, and the one he published last year (tagged) is nonfiction. Since I fell in love with his long-form fiction, I haven‘t raced out to buy these, but you know, they‘re probably good. I should try them. ♥️ 5y
gradcat @CarolynM I think you‘ll be surprised at how fast you get through it—it absolutely flows! ♥️ 5y
Cinfhen I tried this book when it was first released and I couldn‘t get into it. I had bailed early on but your review makes me want to try again 😊 5y
gradcat @Cinfhen At the risk of repeating myself, I was REALLY not looking forward to it. And that‘s what I like about #Booked2019 ... I loved this book, and would never have read it if it wasn‘t for Litsy. I think I read this book in about two days, and I don‘t read very fast anymore. It just held my attention so well—almost accidentally, I think—strictly owing to those three reasons I wrote about in my review. If you do try it again, I hope you like it. 5y

Last book for November and this was a weird one. It is about a man, Billy Pilgrim, who gets displaced in time and is kidnapped by aliens. All of this starts when he is a soldier during World War 2. You never really know whether he's nuts or not.

BarbaraTheBibliophage So, a #soldiersstory, then? Sometimes classics are so weird ... 5y

I don‘t think there is any praise I can give that hasn‘t already been heaped on this book. Excellently written, powerfully evocative semi-autobiographical essays/stories about young men in the Vietnam war. Heartbreaking and honest and so very good.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cinfhen It really is an amazing book. Your review is perfect 👌🏾 5y
