A phenomenal non-fiction book and movie recommendation for #blackhistorymonth.

My masters is in forensic psychology so this story is powerful to me. Heartbreaking, motivating, educational and important too. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 for each.

And Michael B. Jordan is my #1 celebrity crush... let's be honest here. He's beautiful to look at. Watch it. Read it.

TiredLibrarian This is a great book. 4d
ncsufoxes My son read this in high school & loved it. He took an ethnic literature course for his senior language requirement (this was 3 years ago & it was a pilot class his school in San Diego was testing out). We have a copy that I need to pull & read. 4d

It‘s said that MLK Jr. was inspired by Thurman‘s work & often carried a copy of this book with him. Published in 1949, Thurman‘s insightful wisdom is (unfortunately) still fresh & relevant today. Thurman discusses how hatred destroys both the oppressor & the disinherited—and offers Jesus and the truth of the Gospel as an example to follow, in love and in resistance. It was the second time I‘ve read this, and I got even more out of it this time.

The subtitle of We Still Here covers the main topics within: pandemic, policing, protest, and possibility. This book was published in 2020 and is organized in interviews format. The chapters Justice for “All” and Whose Violence? were especially powerful.

julieclair The title kind of says it all, doesn‘t it. Sounds like an important book. 👍 4d

This book is aimed at organizers, but I highly recommend it even if you (like me) don‘t intend to do any organizing. It‘s full of information, both actionable and philosophical. This is a book we need in this time of terrifying fascists destroying our government.

Eye opening account of the author‘s experience fighting for wrongly convicted and over sentenced people on death row and with life sentences. Even after commuting, years or decades of life has been lost to the prison system with rarely any compensation for the lives damaged. In some cases, innocent people and even children have been executed in American prisons.

Butterfinger Oh, goodness. Children? We do have to change the system. The tagged is about how girls of color are targeted in elementary and middle schools because of the stereotype of being abrasive and loud. There are few ways to escape the hardships, so they get into gangs and prostitution. It was really an eye-opener. All because of how the teachers branded them as trouble. 1mo
Cosmos_Moon_River @Butterfinger the world is a sad place, and I wish there was more we could do to make it better, and that others wanted the same. There‘s such a lack of empathy these days. 1mo
TheBookHippie The school to prison pipeline is alive and well… 1mo

TheBookHippie @Cosmos_Moon_River I‘ve heard him speak it‘s just so layered. He has done amazing work. 1mo
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger they just lowered the age of arresting children to older than six in Florida and many other states a few years ago. 1mo
Butterfinger @TheBookHippie @Cosmos_Moon_River let's continue to be reactive instead of proactive. Schools need more training for SEL in elementary and not worry about tests. It breaks my heart. I know I am preaching to the choir. 1mo
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger I agree. Sigh. 1mo
Cosmos_Moon_River @TheBookHippie so sad. Six year olds do not understand what they are doing and should never be arrested. Investigation into family life would probably be more appropriate and guiding the child with education and love. So sad, and I feel racial disparities are only going to grow with this administration. Continuing to dehumanize the “others”. 1mo
Cosmos_Moon_River I wish I would have been aware of his work before. He has done, and maybe still does, work in my city. @Butterfinger it‘s getting harder and harder to keep up the good fight and stay positive. 1mo
LoverOfLearning A fantastic audiobook and a great movie! 7d

My annual reading theme is sociopolitical. I haven't had a chance to post my full #Roll100 list yet. However, these are the 3 for January's roll. Getting 2025 off to a fighting start.
