*Ally read novels, wrapped up in her duvet beside the central-heating radiator in her bedroom, borrowing them from the centre & the public library, sometimes finishing one & starting another without even changing her position or getting up to make coffee, like an addict...She imagined the reading that she did now as like climbing inside one of those deep old beds she'd seen in a museum, with a sliding door to close behind you...*

So, I finished this book a few days ago and never got around to reviewing. It‘s a some of the stories either went over my head or I simply just couldn‘t get into (my ADD most likely played a part in that.
Other stories were really good but triggering. Overall I‘m happy I read it and am going to go back and reread the stories I didn‘t quite get.

Working in the justice system I‘ve had a front row seat to a lot of injustices - both to victims and offenders (and offenders who shouldn‘t be offenders), so I‘m always hesitant to weigh in at the first information. If you haven‘t read the full article, do but know it‘s graphic. He isn‘t disputing the events happened just consent. There‘s enough smoke that I feel confident the fire was real for a long time and a lot of people knew. Beyond sad.

Hooked_on_books I read a long form article back when the initial accuser came forward and he appeared to exhibit a clear pattern of behavior, so I‘m not surprised. This kind of behavioral pattern doesn‘t happen in a vacuum. The more we move to value women and stop socializing boys to believe they can do whatever they want, the better this will get (though, of course, women can be abusers, too). 3mo
BethM @Hooked_on_books I agree. I can‘t fix the damage done by our parents to my generation of men but I can sure as hell make sure my son is a better version. 3mo
Hooked_on_books We need more women like you making that commitment. We all know wonderful men who would not do these things, proof that it is possible! 3mo

DaveGreen7777 This is beyond disgusting and disappointing! 🤮 For years I thought Neil was one of the good ones, only to find out he was just really good at hiding what he really was through his public persona. ☹️ 3mo
AmyG Exactly @BethM ….my son and DIL said the same thing. This man is a predator. I was horrified by the article. And I was sadly disappointed by Amanda Palmer. 😢 (edited) 3mo
Darklunarose This is highly disappointing, but we shouldn‘t be shocked.makes you wonder how many more predators are hiding in plain sight. 3mo
Soubhiville I started to read the Rolling Stone article released today and had to stop, it‘s too disturbing. I‘m so disappointed that someone so trusted had this lurking behind the scenes. 3mo
5feet.of.fury The Vulture article is ROUGH. I agree @Hooked_on_books pattern of behavior.. not just in what they are alleging but how the interactions came about… complete power imbalance. Yuck. 3mo
BethM @AmyG I have never heard of her, but the complicity is not surprising. 100% guarantee she‘s been his victim too, and is working to prevent losing access to their son. Prior to this who would‘ve believed her? So easy to take that kid from her then. And honestly- this is pretty typical behavior from the family of sex offenders (which is what he is), but I wish it wasn‘t. 3mo
BethM @Darklunarose a lot is the answer. 3mo
BethM @Soubhiville @5feet.of.fury what is the most disappointing is the ease with which he felt protected. People knew. They had to have. It‘s sort of like the diddy thing- there are many others involved in the cover up. I‘d put money on it. I wish the behavior itself floored me but honestly I‘ve been exposed to too much over my career for this to even hit the halfway terrible mark. But the dichotomy of the public/personal persona is next level. 👇 3mo
BethM I‘ve worked with less than 5 sociopaths in my time, it‘s not as common as you would think, but I think he would probably fit the bill. 3mo
Darklunarose @BethM yep. A heck of a lot out there. 2mo

84/150 Kinda of meh, not the best stories I've seen from Gaiman. These are the kind of stories you enjoy but forget an hour after you've read them. Buckingham's art was nice, but usually confined to small panels. 3 ⭐⭐⭐

vivastory @Suet624 I have his latest arriving soon as an April selection from Aardvark & I still have Dr No sitting on my tbr shelves. I also really want to read Erasure soon so I can check out American Fiction. It's a good problem to have 🙂 12mo
vivastory @Branwen It's really striking! 12mo
Suet624 @vivastory you‘re right. It‘s a great problem to have. Did you see The New Yorker article about him? He seems like a bit of a curmudgeon. 12mo

Pickpick

This is one of the best short story collections I've read in recent memory. Each of the stories is so different from the next and wholly believable. My only real complaint is that the final story wasn't a full sized novel... Not bad for a random buy at the Friends of the Library sale.

Making progress with my cheerful Bingo square.

Cover Crush: Stay Up With Me

Humbug: The Christmas Murder Game

Cuddly Crime: Murder on the Xmas Express (I'm counting it because it was marketed as a cosy, even though things got tonally dark)

Do I feel better about it being the Winter? Not yet. Maybe after a few more squares!

TrishB It was still light at 5pm. We‘re getting there 😁 2y
RaeLovesToRead @TrishB My frosted-up car disagrees! Hahaha. Oh man, I hate Winter. (Although I moaned all summer about the heat... so there's just no suiting me 😅) 2y

An incredible collection. A series of emotional, bittersweet portraits of characters dealing with loss, grief, jealousy, resentment & preoccupation. We get just a taste of each character's story, & it's just enough.

These tales are of connection, sadness, distance, heartbreak, understandings & misunderstandings.

Heartfelt & devastating in an everyday way, I absolutely loved this book.

It has one of my all-time favourite covers to boot!
