Time to finish this baby, Shardlakians! 🤩

LiseWorks Yes I want to read it now, but I want it fresh in my mind for the discussion lol 12h
Mollyanna I still have one and a half chapters left of the previous section. This working thing is really messing with my reading time. 11h
dabbe @LiseWorks I hear ya! I'm trying to pace myself, too! 🤩🤣🤗 10h

@julieclair

I hope this counts. I'll be finishing the second half of this book with the #ShardlakeBR, and I'll be on The British Isles, in England, particularly at Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight for the Battle of the Solent. 🇬🇧

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

AnneCecilie I‘m not really one to look up things as I read unless there‘s a reference to a painting and I want to see it 1d
dabbe I find I want to see pictures of things, too, like The Solent, The Mary Rose, Portsmouth, etc. I also look up some of the people (like Richard Rich), and yep, he was just as evil as he's portrayed in the novels. 1d
kwmg40 I like looking up the places where Shardlake goes. In fact, I'll be travelling to London very soon to visit my daughter, and I'm hoping to visit the Temple area so I can see where Shardlake spent much of his time! 1d

dabbe @kwmg40 Oh, please take pictures and share! 🤩🤩🤩 1d
kwmg40 @dabbe Yes, I definitely plan to do that! 1d
lil1inblue I'm definitely interested in researching more about the Battle of Solent, as well as the Italian War as a whole. I like “zooming out,“ so to speak, to see how the events fit into world politics of the time. Previously, I went down rabbit holes reading about H VIII's wives, and I also read quite a bit about Greek Fire. 15h
dabbe @lil1inblue #ditto! I have read a bunch of books about his wives, too. So fascinating! I came out truly admiring Anne of Cleves and Catherine Parr. And Greek fire was so interesting, wasn't it? I'm also fascinated by water, so I loved looking up pictures of The Solent and the English Channel. It's amazing to think that England was once landlocked to the continent; you can still see it in the southeaster outline of the country! 🤩 14h

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

LiseWorks Greed! 2d
OutsmartYourShelf They're sly bullies who pick on the weak or those they consider inferior. 2d
AnneCecilie They feel that they are entitled to what they want because they now are rich 1d
See All 8 Comments
dabbe @Liseworks @OutsmartYourShelf @AnneCecilie ... Even though Dryrick and Furstowe are not upper class or nobility, they still lord it over others less fortunate. There was such a pecking order during this time period--the social pyramid where everyone knew his place. And women didn't even belong anywhere on it! 1d
kwmg40 I find Dryrick an interesting character. His arrogance and bullying make him loathsome, but at the same time, it seems like he might have some good qualities in him and his unpleasantness might be caused by pressures or inner struggles that we don't know about. 1d
dabbe @kwmg40 He does seems to really love his wife and children, so there is that. He also had to start from the bottom and work his way up. I find him to be quite insecure underneath all of his bravado. 1d
lil1inblue They are all about gaining money and power, regardless of the damage they cause in order to obtain them. The entitlement is so...icky. Dryrick and Priddis are particularly interesting since they had to work their way up, but seem to have a loathing for people who were where they were when they started. Is this a self-loathing of sorts? 16h
dabbe @lil1inblue Excellent thought. Or it could be a thought of “I got mine, now I don't want you to have yours and possibly rise above me again.“ Or both! 😊 14h

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

LiseWorks Was Ellen put in the nut house so the rapist could get away with it? 2d
LiseWorks Hugh just wants to go to war. He seems subdued. They all are! 2d
OutsmartYourShelf I think Leacon seems a bit disillusioned with army life. Can't make my mind up about Hugh, whether he is being mistreated in some way or if he is the problem. Poor Lamkin! One thing I dislike about this series is the constant animal deaths. 2d
See All 14 Comments
AnneCecilie @LiseWorks I wondered if she was put away to cover up a murder 1d
AnneCecilie I‘m starting to wonder what Calfhill saw. Has it do with the forest or is it related to the family in a way. The dog episode makes it obvious that there‘s a lot going on under the surface in that family 1d
dabbe @LiseWorks Interesting question, and one I hope we find out! 1d
dabbe @LiseWorks It makes me wonder if he wants to unleash his hidden rage onto the French since he can't do it at home. 1d
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf I think Leacon has PTSD. HIs war stories told to Shardlake are simply heartbreaking. And something happened to Hugh and his sister. I hope Michael Calfhall is completely innocent. And I am HORRIFIED by what happened to Lamkin. My previous dogs were greyhounds. They're usually so gentle, but if you half-starve them like they were starved at Hoyland, who can blame them for fresh meat. 😱 1d
dabbe @AnneCecilie She definitely saw at least one man die in the fire. Or was he pushed in there? 🤔 1d
dabbe @AnneCecilie As awful as Abigail is, I felt so sorry for her losing her pet in such a gruesome fashion. And her admonishing Shardlake and telling him that he can't see what's directly in front of him--that definitely is foreshadowing bad things to come with this family. 1d
kwmg40 I find myself wanting to know more about all the new characters. What secrets are they hiding? What are they thinking? Sansom is really good at giving all the supporting characters depth and mystery. 1d
dabbe @kwmg40 I also appreciate the frustration that Shardlake feels when he can't quite solve the puzzles ... yet. 1d
lil1inblue I feel as frustrated as Shardlake regarding the Hobbeys. Something is amiss, but I can't figure it out! I have no idea what to think of Abigail. She's terrible, but I feel like there is a reason for it. It's unsettling - Sansom does a great job of creating tension. 16h

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

LiseWorks The people don't seem to have a say about war. Especially the men they are gathering to go fight. The rich make the decisions, and the rest have to suffer. Women do not have a say in any. I'm glad to see the queen secretly ask Shardlake to do something about the ward for a friend. 2d
AnneCecilie History has a tendency to repeat itself. When one or more groups gets more rights, there‘s bound to be a backlash. 1d
dabbe @LiseWorks Catherine Parr has some power, but even she hides from H VIII. I have always wondered how you could knowingly marry someone you knew had had two former wives killed. What the heck? 1d
See All 13 Comments
dabbe @AnneCecilie 🎯🎯🎯 1d
kwmg40 The thing that struck me was how wars could be started or change course based on the whims of the leaders, while all the ordinary people suffer the consequences. 1d
dabbe @kwmg40 It reminds me of THE ILIAD, where the gods play the humans like pieces on a chessboard. The absolute control these monarchs had, especially H VIII, is astonishing. No wonder some people want to be king! 😊 1d
kwmg40 @dabbe A good comparison! 1d
AnneCecilie @dabbe @LiseWorks Maybe that just shows how little power women had? She was just a pawn in a game, and saying yes gave her family more power 1d
lil1inblue @dabbe That's an excellent comparison! I can definitely see H VIII in this light. 16h
lil1inblue I can't help but compare H VIII's ego to that of the tangerine dumpster fire. Their thirst for power is insatiable. On a separate note, the treatment of and discussion about mentally ill individuals is not so different than some of the things I hear today. (And it was not that long ago that we were still institutionalizing people and performing lobotomies.) 16h
dabbe @lil1inblue 🤩😊🤗 14h
dabbe @AnneCecilie 🎯! And how do you say no to a king--especially this one? 14h

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

LiseWorks I was so glad that Barack made up with his wife and that she was having a baby.. I don't understand why France is invading. I guess I forgot my high school history. This book is better than the others. 2d
OutsmartYourShelf Good so far, although I can't get a read on what is going on with Hugh & family he is staying with. Anything I can think of doesn't quite fit. 2d
AnneCecilie This book has me hooked so far. I feel that Sansom is using each book to look at something specific within the Tudor society and teach us about it without lecturing. 1d

dabbe @LiseWorks Yeah, I'm glad for Barak and Tamasin, too. All I can think of re: France invading is that these two countries go back centuries filled with hate and wanting to dominate one another. England was still relatively new to being a kick-ass country, which is why I think H VIII is so cocky with all of his battles to show his strength. Perhaps France sees England as a threat--only 21 miles from Calais to the White Cliffs of Dover. 1d
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf Something bad is definitely going on! I've read this before, so you'd think I'd remember. But nope! I'm dying to see what's really going on behind the scenes! 1d
dabbe @AnneCecilie He was quite meticulous with his research! 1d
kwmg40 This one seemed to start a little bit more slowly than the others but now I'm quite invested in the various mysteries, and I'm enjoying learning about the historical context. 1d
dabbe @kwmg40 Agree 💯. He gets more in depth as the books continue on, but we're so invested in the characters that we're okay with that ... I hope! 🤩 1d
kwmg40 @dabbe I'm definitely OK with that. I don't mind slow beginnings if I trust the author enough to know that all the setup will be worthwhile. 1d
lil1inblue I finally got to 50% last night and promptly fell asleep! There's so much going on in this book! I honestly have no idea where any of the storylines are going to end up, but I'm enjoying the ride! 16h
dabbe @kwmg40 🎯🎯🎯! 14h
dabbe @lil1inblue We're in the saddle just like they are, traveling all over the place! 🤩🤣😊 14h

Pickpick

I‘m a bit behind on reviews, so I‘m going to try and catch up this week.

Another great Matthew Shardlake novel (#SeriesLove2025) for #ShardlakeBR. Shardlake and Barak are after a most sinister killer who taunts them along the way. Meanwhile Henry VIII is in pursuit of Catherine Parr.

TheSpineView You can do it!👊 7d
Mollyanna @TheSpineView 😊. Thank you. 7d
dabbe This was a good one! So's the next! Keep on truckin'! 🤩🤗🤩 7d
