Salt to the Sea is a story of refugees during World War II. It‘s part of the author‘s family history, and her research into real-life events is meticulous. And yet, this is a story of people, not just history. The history is the why and the how, but the people in the novel are its heart.

This is a YA book so grounded in history—and tragedy—that it feels like an adult book.

Just started this one yesterday, and I‘m flying through it. I‘m not a YA reader, but so far I like the historical fiction WWII story. And it should count for #pop18 #setatsea.

I liked Girl on the Train, I thought it was clever and a page turner but this one, not so much! After an exhausting amount of energy spent on keeping track of all the narrators, I was left with a very mediocre story. Nothing thrilling and the twists ho-hum! I‘m still willing to give Paula Hawkins another shot. I know it centers around a river, not a sea but I‘m counting it for #pop18 #setatsea and it‘s another square on my #TBRbingo 😃 👇🏼

This was a quick, enjoyable read. Lots of fun, but light on depth, which is just the type of book I was in the mood for.

Since most of the story takes place on one ship out at sea, the world building is kept to a minimum. I hope the sequel goes further into defining the world that Alosa inhabits.
