Princess of the Sword | Lynn Kurland

Ch 12:
“She says you‘re the archmage now. And that Adhémar is king.” Miach nodded. “I‘m surprised there‘s anything left of Neroche with him looking after it,” Keir said with a snort. “Your brother is an ass.” Miach suppressed a smile. He might have felt sorry for Adhémar and his reputation, but his brother had certainly gone out of his way to earn it.

humouress Keir shook his head. “Nay, not now.” He bowed his head briefly, then looked back up at Miach. “My mother goaded him into the whole thing, of course. He had become so . . . agitated. Nothing pleased him. Worse still, he became convinced that we were plotting against him. My mother felt she had no choice but to push him into doing something foolish and hope that he would destroy himself. ⬇️ 4d
humouress ⬇️ I suppose we could have brought ourselves to kill him eventually—since he threatened the same against us so often—though it wouldn‘t have been easily done. My father‘s power was formidable, and he wasn‘t one to be caught unawares.” 4d
humouress Ch 16: He bid farewell to various and sundry progenitors, thanked King Uachdaran profusely for his hospitality and the loan of his smithy, then turned to the business of convincing the horses they wanted to fly again. Hearn‘s horses were, surprisingly, chomping at the bit to once again wear dragonshape. Even the elvish horses were looking fairly enthusiastic. Miach turned them all into powerful dragons, glittering and fierce-looking. 4d

humouress “Besotted, isn‘t he?” Harold remarked in a loud whisper. “Very,” his father agreed. Miach looked at them both. “Can you fault me for it?” They both shook their heads, smiling as if they understood perfectly. “Your Morgan doesn‘t need you to,” Gilraehen remarked, “but guard her well just the same. And tell her daily that you realize how fortunate you are she looked at you twice.”“I agree, Father,” Harold said with a smile. “It works wonders.” ⬇️ (edited) 4d
humouress ⬇️ Miach looked at them both wryly. “Any other words of advice?” “Have you wooed her well?” Gilraehen asked. “Ah—” “Go have a nap,” Harold suggested. “We‘ll have a list of appropriate ideas waiting for you when you wake. Really, Miach, you would think you could manage this on your own.” ⬇️ 4d
humouress ⬇️ Miach favored his progenitors with a choice curse or two and had laughter as his reward. A nap, however, sounded like the best idea he‘d heard all morning. Morgan needed it far worse than he did and he was completely spent. He pushed himself to his feet and went to stand next to his lady. “Have I told you today how fortunate I am you looked at me twice?” he asked politely. Predictably, she looked at him as if he‘d lost his mind. 4d

Princess of the Sword | Lynn Kurland

Loved the 1st book, disappointed with the 2nd, thought I‘d finish the trilogy. 1/3 of the way in, it‘s getting back to the standard of the 1st one. Miach & Morgan are travelling with one of his myriad brothers, her grandfather & her uncle. It‘s nice that they have family with them but not sure how it advances the plot.

humouress Funny thing is (even if he‘s trying to go incognito) anyone with magic instantly recognises the archmage of Neroche 🧙‍♂️or his alter ego, prince Miach (edited) 5d
humouress There are lots of Gaelic and Welsh looking names; a pronunciation guide would have been helpful. A map would have been even more helpful. Lots of lads and gels cluttering up the place, too. 5d
humouress Would have been nice to have seen a bit more of Adhémar at the end, given that we started off this trilogy with him (edited) 4d

Star of the Morning | Lynn Kurland

2 chapters in and liking it so far. Published in 2008, it‘s reminiscent of late 20th century fantasy which is a Good Thing to my mind. Our heroine is Morgan of the island of Melksham, which evokes Morgan of Hed (the Riddlemaster trilogy is one of my long-standing favourites)

humouress I like the way Morgan (a mercenary) appreciates a comfortable bed.
I'm enjoying the subtle humour.
A map of the countries would have been useful, especially as they travel around quite a lot.

It's not YA, but it reads like YA.

Ash (Cinderella) is a con-artist. She's managed to ensnare the prince with her charm and (!) strong magic. Her step-mother trained her for this all her life. Now she's in the palace to do something or other in the weeks leading up to the royal wedding.

First person POV. Lots of words. So many empty words. (please imagine me saying this like Mrs Bennett complaining about her nerves)

1/?

julesG Motive? Why is Ash doing this? I'm fine with slow reveals but this is no reveal, not a single solid hint at why(!) Ash is doing this con.

World-building? I cannot imagine this world. Not enough information. And I can only presume so much from lace bodices on ballgowns and men wearing suits and ties. Princes, paupers, skullery maids, carriages,...

julesG Magic system? How does the magic work? Furthermore, dear Ash, why use magic in the first place? You've been trained to dazzle, you shouldn't need drugs, erm sorry Magic, to charm the prince.

And the final nail in the coffin: I can smell the sweet stench of a love-triangle. Apropos sweet stench, why call the other guy "Rance" that's so disgustingly close to rancid. I kept imagining him enveloped in a cloud of BO. 3/3

Told from 1st person POV. Lhind seems a child, calling people names, has lost memories about the past and is hiding secrets

In the first book, Halani is the free trader/healer who saved Azarion & Gilene. I was so excited that we got to hear her story in this book. Halani is a healer with earth magic and Malachus is a dragon trapped in human form. The evil empress from the first book has set her sites on Malachus believing that his blood will heal her & return her to power. (Cont. ⬇️)

CoffeeK8 Halani & Malachus start their relationship with a lot of miscommunication/mistrust but they put work into strengthening their relationship and keeping themselves and their people safe. 4y

My pre-ordered for this book popped up on my kindle today. I lost track of when it was supposed to be released so it was a lovely surprise. I had to come here and show off the cover. So. Gorgeous. ❤️

CoffeeK8 Oh I‘m rereading the first one now so I can start this ASAP! It‘s been so long I‘ve forgotten parts. 5y
MarriedtoMrT I saw Grace Draven and pretty cover and pre-ordered thinking it was a series standalone. I don‘t remember much from the first, either! I‘m glad you mentioned it so I can refresh my memory! 5y
