In this xianxia-inspired contemporary fantasy, a Chinese immortal and a French elf navigate romance, familial loyalty, and workplace demands. In her debut novel, Taiwanese American author Mia Tsai has created an unforgettable paranormal adventure that is full of humor, passion, and depth. "Overflowing with effervescent charm and sly humor, Bitter Medicine intoxicates with its steamy romance, globe-trotting adventure, family drama mystery, and a fabulously inventive world of magic inspired by cross-cultural lore." --Angela Mi Young Hur, author of Folklorn As a descendant of the Chinese god of medicine, ignored middle child Elle was destined to be a doctor. Instead, she is underemployed as a mediocre magical calligrapher at the fairy temp agency. Nevertheless, she challenges herself by covertly outfitting Luc, her client and crush, with high-powered glyphs. Half-elf Luc, the agency's top security expert, has his own secret: he's responsible for a curse laid from an old assignment. To heal them, he'll need to perform his job duties with unrelenting excellence and earn time off from his tyrannical boss. When Elle saves Luc's life, they begin a dangerous collaboration, but their chemistry blooms. Happiness, for once, is an option for them both. But Elle is loyal to her family, and Luc is bound by his true name. To win freedom from duty, they must make unexpected sacrifices.

Mehso-so

This book started so strong for me. It was a contender to be my favorite book of January. Unfortunately it fizzled out for me about half way through. 55% and it was great and just fell apart for me. I‘m not sure if it‘s because of what happened in the story or what. But then the ending kind of saved it for me. But that middle part was rough and really brought this one down for me.

Laughterhp This was the second Asian fantasy set partly in San Francisco that I was mixing up with the other book. 9mo

Does it (and I think you know where I‘m going with this) count as breaking a very sensible book buying hiatus because you are in the process of packing up to move *IF* you are out of state?

Thanks to @Rissreads & @MrsMalaprop for pointing us in the direction of Boffin Books, Planet Books & Rabble Books & Games - absolutely lovely & amazing bookstores 📚 I loved visiting them all ☺️

jen_the_scribe I‘d say, it doesn‘t count… but I‘m biased when it comes to book buying so not sure if my judgment can be trusted lol 2y
MrsMalaprop Haha, love it 📚🥰 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @MrsMalaprop, my self control snapped at Rabble 😅😂 2y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @jen_the_scribe, I think your judgment is sound! 2y
Rissreads Yay! I don‘t think book buying should count when you are on holiday. That‘s what a holiday is! Doing things you don‘t normally do in everyday life. So enjoy! 👏🏻♥️ 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Rissreads, as long as everything fits neatly into my suitcase at the end, then it‘s not a problem! Getting rained on at Rottnest today ☔️ the ferry ride over was wild - the crew had their hands full with seasick passengers 🫣 (I was ok - but I‘m not really looking forward to the trip back) 2y
Rissreads That‘s such a shame about the weather! 😞 2y

I was all in until the end because it felt too rushed. I understand the sense of urgency but something happens towards the end (something that could be the plot of a sequel)… Sigh.
