March's favorite is quite possibly my favorite fiction book of the year. The writing was exquisite. I'd love to read this again with a group.

The writing is beautiful. Phillips writes her characters with such tenderness, but it is never overwrought. There's an interesting distance to the the narrative that keeps things feeling more historical than fictional. There were moments of dialogue that I felt dragged on a bit and the use of dialect made it challenging to engage, but the story is incredible, tragic, and inspiring; to warrant all three of those adjectives is indeed a feat.

The dissidents of 1960-1970s USSR were a small, complex, intelligent, and ambitious group. Nathans breaks down the individual personalities as well as the statistics of the groups. He doesn't pull his punches in regard to the blind eye shown to women in the movement or the glaring intensity focused upon those with Jewish ancestry. Beautifully written and thoughtful.

That was pretty good. Just picked up another of her books, Lark & Termite, at a used book sale today, so hopefully, it's as decent a read as this.

One of my little pleasures, waking up early on a Sunday to make it to my favorite coffee/breakfast place to read before the crowds show up
