Just finished this one. Two young teenagers dealing with all BIG secrets and much sadness. Lots of BIG ideas about Art too. Immersive and authentic. Lovely stuff from the author of Tashi. Plus #orchids

#20in4

Count me in for 20 hours reading in 4 days. This leaves me with choices rather than a set schedule. Ideally, I would like to finish the tagged.

Orchid Thief | Susan Orlean
post image
Mehso-so

This book is not about John Laroche, the "thief" in the title. He shows up a few times. But he is by no means the focus. Orlean goes to Florida, meets a lot of quirky orchid-obsessed collectors, learns about shady real estate deals and the exploitation of native people, and absolutely does not EVER, not one single time, EVER see a ghost orchid. Not one. Sorry if that's a spoiler, but I would have liked to have known this going in.

SamAnne The movie is so great if you haven‘t seen it. It is a complete retelling with Nick Cage, Chris Cooper and Meryl Streep. I‘m not a big Orlean fan. Movie is called Adaptation. (edited) 2y
Brooke_H @SamAnne Yes! I loved the movie when I saw it years ago. I would love to rewatch it. 2y

Wild Orchid | Beverley Brenna
Pickpick

This book is a beautiful coming of age story in which a girl learns that she doesn't need a boyfriend to live her life. She just needs to accept that certain changes are unavoidable. The voice of this novella makes it very difficult to read, but, absolutely worth every page of struggle.

Completely not book-related, but you guys know more about flowers than ANY of my irl friends, so…

I have 8.5 hours left in my current job (not counting 🤫) and one of my lovely co-workers got me a ‘you won‘t be cluttering up the place here anymore‘ orchid. It‘s GORGEOUS.

How do I not kill it? The roots are coming right through the bottom of the pot. Should I repot or leave well alone. Basically, what do I need to know?! Thank you 😁

RaeLovesToRead Aww pretty!!! 🌺🌺 (no idea 🙂) 2y
Simona I don‘t know how to help you, but the flower is beautiful 🤩 2y
batsy So pretty! 💜 (Having previously killed an orchid plant that I was gifted, I will *not* be offering any advice...) 2y

rockpools @Simona @RaeLovesToRead It is lovely, isn‘t it? Ah well. I‘ll just have to take loads of photos now! 2y
rockpools @batsy Oh no! The struggle is real… I‘m kind of scared of it tbh 😟 2y
AllDebooks Gorgeous, I love orchids. Easy peesy to look after. Just soak the bark chips once a week. I put mine in the sink with enough water to cover pot. Leave for half an hour, drain. Job done. You can buy commercial food but I don't always use it. 2y
squirrelbrain How lovely! And congrats on (nearly) finishing your job! I heard they like being in bathrooms (humid conditions) but really I have no clue and I‘ve never bought one as I‘m too scared! 2y
julesG What @AllDebooks said. Same as those air plants, actually. I tend to soak them all together in the tub. We have 12 orchids - kid#2 gets one for her birthday every year. 2y
charl08 Beautiful flowers. No tips here either! 2y
rockpools @AllDebooks Ooh, thank you - that sounds doable. And thank you for the link 😊 2y
rockpools @julesG Wow! That‘s super-encouraging! I have a passable success rate with airplants. (Unlike cacti. And ferns. And indestructible ivy 🤨) We‘ll give it a go. 2y
rockpools @squirrelbrain Thank you 😊. It‘s installed in the bathroom for now, and I‘ll find it a permanent home at the weekend. They‘ve always struck me as being particularly terrifying plants to keep alive, so we‘ll see. Jules and Debbie make it sound SO straightforward 🫣 2y
rockpools @charl08 As long as I‘m not the only person with NO IDEA! 😂 2y
AllDebooks @rockpools 😊 Also, good luck on your last day in your old job. Here's to an exciting chapter for you in your new job. 🥂 2y
CarolynM Glad others were able to help because I certainly can‘t! It‘s a lovely gift to be given anyway. Sounds like it‘s appropriate to say congratulations on leaving your job. Hope you‘ve got something good to replace it in one form or another🙂 2y
julesG Have a good last day! 2y
rockpools @julesG Thank you! I survived! And I‘m going home with a bag full of gin and chocolate, which is quite a surprise! 2y
rockpools @CarolynM Aw, thanks Carolyn. Yes, starting a new job on Monday with the same organisation. Hopefully more frontline, more secure, and less politics (and less pay, but there it is). Looking forward to it though. 2y
EvieBee Yay for you! Has anyone mentioned that the like bright indirect light? 2y

Read the bulk of this #staycationintime book on my actual staycation. Vacation fell through so I made the best of it and did lots of reading by the channel. I SO enjoyed this one. So many rich descriptions of beautiful plants and places ♡ It did take a little longer to get through because I was constantly googling images of all the different orchids. I love the way the author tied so many aspects of Orchid history and current culture. 🌸💕

HeathHof Thank you again for this fab pick! @amyg 2y
SamAnne Have you watched the movie Adaptation based on the book? Loosely based on the book…. 2y
HeathHof @SamAnne Yes I have. Before I knew there was a book that it was based on. Definitely time for a rewatch though because it's been several years. 2y
AmyG I am so happy you liked this. Ha…I googled the orchids, too, when I read this. 2y

I cannot say enough about how much I love the package that you sent! @AmyG You hit the nail right on the head with your choices in books, snacks, stationary, bookmarks, seeds and PROPAGATION STATION!!! I'm going to dive right into The Orchid Theif today. I saw the film years ago but wasn't aware that it was based in real events/a book and I adore Meryl Streep so totally looking forward to a rewatch after the book! I also have big plans ⬇️

HeathHof For the prop station! Also, poppies are some of my absolute fave, and I hope I can get them to grow! Everything is just lovely, thank you so much!! ☺️ and thanks for hosting @Chrissyreadit & @DinoMom 2y
Avanders 🤩🤩🤩 2y
AmyG I had so much fun shopping for you. I,too, love plants so I am happy you like the Propagation Station! Have a great holiday weekend. 2y

Not only did I save my orchid from the brink of death, (She was down to only 2 leaves.) I got her to bloom! NOT an easy feat! Orchids are not easy to keep alive long term. And I've never had a green thumb so that didn't help either. Thanks to some fb groups I figured out what worked. For me it was going to full water culture. Anyone else out there orchid fans? I did read the tagged book and enjoyed it. Though I found it sad too.

Tianarose I love orchids. Sadly I don‘t have good light where I live and can‘t have them 😔 3y
bookishbitch @Tianarose Sorry to hear. Yeah, light is important in the process. 3y
