Pickpick

This is a concise history of Pearl Harbor which includes many of the “left out” bits. It varies between text and graphic formats making it less intimidating. At first the digressions to give context felt a bit distracting, then I found them to be a bit of a break from the true sorrow being described. I will recommend this to young patrons! #nonfictionovember

Pickpick

While the subject was to be the relationship between Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, this book encompassed the trials and triumphs of many Black musicians, celebrities, and athletes. It isn‘t hard to determine the Author‘s blind spots but he encouraged the charisma of Muhammad Ali to shine through his prose. A much more complex look at the sixties than I had expected. #Nonfictionovember

A couple of lovelies from Zinsser. (I told you it was good.) His exclamation point handslap is paining me. ☺️

In Cold Blood | Truman Capote

For #nonfictionovember and because #longoverdue @readordierachel, @batsy and I will be reading Truman Capote's true crime classic In Cold Blood.
If you want to join us, please do! No set schedule. Just the goal to read it and discuss during November.
(Of course it's possible we are the only ones on Litsy who haven't read it yet. 😅)

In the United States the history of the American Revolution was written by the victors...Loyalist refugees simply fell outside the bounds of American national narratives. They received scant attention from British historians...reminders of defeat...Loyalists loomed largest... in Canadian history.
Today's goal: finish this book which is fascinating reading as I knew nothing about loyalist "refugees."plant daffodils for a break! #Nonfictionovember

Laura317 I like hearing BOTH sides of the story. It is true that the winners write the history books. 8y
kspenmoll @Laura317 Met Saturday's too ambitious goal tonight - so enjoyed the new thinking this book generated- 8y
charl08 Sounds great. I'm hoping to get hold of a copy of Olusoga's book soon which I think will have ties to Jasanoff's. 8y
