This is the first book I taught as a student teacher!

Charlotte Doyle is traveling home from school in England to Rhode Island in 1832. Charlotte finds herself the lone passenger with a cruel captain & a mutinous crew. What begins as an exciting ocean crossing turns into a nightmare, where Charlotte is put on trial for murder.

dabbe 💙 this one! 4mo
Karisimo I read this recently and it was darker than I expected, but good! Thanks for sharing!! 4mo

Amazing story of the prejudice and injustice that faced black men and women in America's armed forces during World War II. Setting is July 1944 at Port Chicago on the California coast. They were disrespected, segregation, forced to use dangerous equipment, and prosecuted with a charge of mutiny punishable by death…

Mimi28 Not really related but kinda- my mom was born in August of 1944 in Chicago. We are preparing to celebrate her 80th birthday. Her mom would have been 99 yesterday 🙏🏽😊🩷How are you doing? I will be sending you a letter soon 5mo

Whew. Fascinating, grim (how would it not be), but a solid read. I‘m about halfway through, and have also been enjoying the historical context the author provides — social and political status of all the people on board, how unbearably crowded it was, the influence of the Thirty Years War on the soldiers on board, etc.

rwmg I don't know where you're based, but have you seen the remains of the Batavia in the Shipwreck Museum just outside Perth, Western Australia? 7mo
Kinniska I‘m a Yank up in the New England area, and I haven‘t as yet gotten to explore anywhere in Australia, but I hope to do so while visiting friends in NZ some day. I saved the museum that holds collected items from the wreck to my Google maps list. 7mo

Reading maritime history = peak middle-aged! This is a fast-paced book about a deadly naval controversy. The author brings this narrative to life with quotes from newspaper articles, society diaries, and legal documents. I dare you to check out the author‘s bio pic (definition of a historian)! 😂🤣⚓️

Cuilin 🙌 same and for me it‘s quickly followed by horticultural history. Finished the Wager and now on the Brother Gardeners. 🚢 🌊 to 🪴 🌳 😆 10mo

Lively YA story of young girl who deals with a lot of troubles on a ship from England to the US in early 1800s I think. A good tale with a strong heroine. A little hard to believe though.

Started a YA book I haven‘t read before.

EclecticBookLover This book always stayed with me after I read it in 4th grade. I had to read years later for graduate school and felt it was just as good. Enjoy! 13mo
KCofKaysville @EclecticBookLover Thanks. I usually like ship-relaed stories. 13mo

Between a pick and a so-so as it took a while for the story to get going. It was also darker than I thought it would be. However, all in all, fairly enjoyable.

This was a fast read for me - full of adventure! I read this originally because it was on Obamas summer book list.
