OutsmartYourShelf
Fair Play | Louise Hegarty

Mehso-so

Abigail is hosting a birthday party for her brother, Benjamin & has invited his circle of close friends. She arrives at the Airbnb to set up the food & drink & also hide the clues for the period murder mystery game they'll be playing later. The party passes without a hitch but the next morning, Benjamin fails to appear for breakfast. His bedroom door is locked & he isn't answering their knocks so they break the door open - Benjamin is dead.

OutsmartYourShelf The story then splits into two, one following the aftermath in the present & the second has the friends appear in a real-life murder mystery. A famous detective arrives to investigate the death & the house suddenly has staff including a butler, a gardener and a housekeeper. This is a golden-age locked-room mystery & everyone is a suspect.

This started off quite well & I was looking forward to the offbeat angle of the mystery.
1d
OutsmartYourShelf There were aspects I liked: the knowing metaphorical 'wink' to the audience by the detective, the nods to the authors (including Conan Doyle & Agatha Christie) of some of the greatest detectives ever written, & the dual narrative, but overall it just didn't work. The main issue for me is that the ending just didn't make sense - I'm not sure if it was due to being an ARC & there was some text missing or not, but it just finished abruptly. 1d
OutsmartYourShelf I'm still not entirely sure who the actual killer was supposed to be in the end.
3.25⭐ as I did enjoy most of it but the ending let it down.

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Pan Macmillan/Picador, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

I want to give romance another try.
Okay, romance novels anyway.
Does anyone have any recommendations for good romance books with a FMC that is over 40, (preferably no kids), no love triangle? I‘m not feeling any angsty teen or young adult story. Any subgenre is fine. Oh, and spice is okay!
As this clip says “No! That is too specific!” 🤪

MaleficentBookDragon @Susanita thank you. Stacked! 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I don't read a lot of romance and I am now realizing I mostly read m/m romance. but I always like books on this bloggers lists https://everyday-reading.com/romance-with-couples-older-than-35/ This is the one I would rec the most if you are okay with a pandemic love story 2mo

TiredLibrarian This isn't a traditional romance novel but it has protagonists who are 60+, no triangle, and minimal kids. I loved it and I'm not a big romance fan. 2mo
Larkken I remember liking the tagged! I liked that both MCs had careers they cared about, there was a nice holiday atmosphere with the meet cute... There is an adult child, but no caregiving. Hope it helps! 2mo
shortsarahrose This mostly fits the bills (the MCs might be under 40? I don‘t remember but they aren‘t angsty 20 something‘s 😆) (edited) 2mo
Bette I remember this being fun, both older main characters join a role playing game…she thinks he‘s a teenage boy, he thinks she‘s as old as his grandmother…until they meet. ❤️🤣 2mo
MaleficentBookDragon @Bette that does sound sweet. Stacked. Thanks! 2mo
Bookzombie This is not the age range, but there is no love triangle and it never felt like teen angst. Just a very steamy, sweet story. Also, not stressful. 2mo
MaleficentBookDragon @ChaoticMissAdventures I found Romantic Comedy at the library for $1 today, so score! 2mo
MaleficentBookDragon @Bette kindle had this one for $2.99 so I grabbed it. Thanks for the rec. 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @MaleficentBookDragon yay!! I hope you like it. 2mo
MaleficentBookDragon @Bookzombie this sounds cute and I love any book set at a camp or in the woods, though my picks are more slasher than romcom. (edited) 2mo

This is the 4th book in the Erin McCabe mystery series and I recommend starting with the 1st one, “By Way of Sorrow“. These are legal thrillers featuring a trans woman lawyer, Erin, & her law partner (a black male). This case deals with racist & homophobic police and a murder. The story also follows Erin in her personal life. I have really enjoyed all of these books, the mysteries are good and the various morality issues are covered well. 4/5 !

You Have Gone Too Far is the first book I have read by Carlene O'Connor. I won it through a Goodreads Giveaway. I was quickly drawn into the book, even though this is the 3rd installment in the County Kerry Series. I feel it can be read as a stand-alone, as I did, without any problem.

I enjoyed getting to know the main characters. There seems to be a little romance in the air that has seemed to be growing for a while. I enjoyed the ⬇️

MonicaLoves2Read other characters as well. I plan on reading the first two books in the series to get to know all the characters better. I thought overall the book was good, though in one part, it seems O'Connor decided to go in a different direction with the plot. As I have never read her before, I am not sure if it was intentional or not.

29 years ago, in County Kerry, there was a cult. Three boys have found a body in the bog girsly murdered. Is the cult resurfacing?

Thanks to Goodreads for the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

😊Happy Reading 😊

Cheryl_Russell Her first two books in this series are just as good. She also writes a cozy mystery series set in Ireland. (edited) 3mo
MonicaLoves2Read @Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes I didn't know she wrote a cozy series. I will check it out. Thanks 😊 3mo

I‘m sorry I‘m SO late posting my week one game points- it‘s been a difficult weekend here in the UK with the enormous storms and I spent so much time trapped at train stations in the middle of the night trying to get home 😔 I managed to find 607 words in the phrase though!

LiseWorks You actually only have to give me your points on the 15th and the 2nd of Jan lol no stressing ok 4mo
