Women's Hotel: A Novel | Daniel M. Lavery

4-3-25: My 22nd finished book of 2025! Soft historical fiction tale about one of many “women‘s hotels” in the NYC area during the times ranging from late 40s through early 60s. For the singletons of the time, these hotels offered young women a decently priced place to lay their heads upon arriving in the Big Apple for the first time. Following many storylines of the girls who lived at the Biedermier Hotel it was at times fun but sad as well.

A day late (and a dollar short) for #weirdwordwednesday — but wanted to share anyway! I just finished the tagged book about the Dutch colony that first settled NYC. This section mentioned some of the Dutch words that were mutated into the English language and are still part of our lexicon 400 years later. As a word nerd, this type of stuff fascinates me!
@CBee

Ruthiella I nerd out on that kind of thing too! 😅 2w
BarbaraBB So funny to scroll and come upon words in my own language! Two very old fashioned and ordinary names in Dutch are Jan and Kees. That‘s what they called the Americans back in those days. Hence the American word Yankees! Just saying 😀 2w
Amiable @Ruthiella @BarbaraBB I love seeing how languages merge and intermingle! 2w
CBee @BarbaraBB I had NO idea!! How cool is that? 2w
CBee @Amiable thanks for sharing 😊 2w

Fascinating account of New Netherland, the Dutch colony on the island of Manhattan that predated the Pilgrims. After the English took control of the colony in 1664, the narrative shifted in favor of the “victor” and much of the Dutch history was lost. This book draws on a research project at the New York State Library that included the translation of thousands of original documents from the 17th century.

ferskner Oh wow, I hadn't heard of this book at all! Thanks for the rec. 2w
Amiable @ferskner This book was published 20 years ago. He just came out with a new one that picks up the history of NYC in 1664 after the English take over the colony: 2w
ferskner Oooooo adding that one too! 2w

4 ⭐ This is a quick short read. Molly Graham works for a very special museum in New York. It‘s a museum of literature. And her museum is just getting ready to start an exhibit on Jane Austin, and some books have been lent from a very private estate in the UK. On the night of the big Premier party, our main gal, Molly has had enough of peopleing and goes back to find there‘s a stranger in her office. Figuring this stranger is some ductal

LibrarianRyan candidate they have a fantastically fun night together as this new British guy, Al, just wants to see the sites of New York. They have an amazing couple of months together and Molly thinks things are going somewhere until one day she is ghosted. She is left at the Met and her date never shows up. When the end of the exhibit comes, she‘s travels to the UK to return the book and finds, her Al waiting for her. This book is exactly what someone expect 12mo
LibrarianRyan when they read the title and the description. This book has all the tropes, but you love them. This book is very predictable, but the book is about the ride and how you get from the beginning to end, then the ability to predict, the happily ever after. This was a fun romcom and I really enjoyed it. It was just the perfect length. Any longer and it would have veered towards boring or overdone. 12mo

𝟒.𝟓⭐
I recently finished With Regrets, this author‘s latest release, and stumbled upon this one by her… it intrigued me so I picked it up. It was tough to listen to at times with the way the world is lately but overall I was there for the journey it took me on, also I liked it much more than With Regrets. The fact that it‘s a standalone doesn‘t hurt. The narration by Cassandra Campbell, Joy Osmanski, & Rebecca Lowman was top-notch. I loved it.

Read in April.

This is set in a dystopian future after WWIII, Manhattan is a POW camp. Sky and Phee, sisters, have only known this world. They winter at The Park ruled by Rolladin and her warlords. A group of Englishmen arrive on the island and the sisters learn that the war has been over for some time. After an incident, they and their mother escape with the men. On the run, can they escape the island and it‘s many dangers? ⬇️

Bookzombie Not my favorite dystopian, but still a pick. This was also my #Bookspin for April. 2y
