Well🤷🏻‍♀️ of course the winner of the #internationalbookerprize is one of my least favorites again but I have to admit the premise of this one is fantastic. A man creates spaces completely similar to how they were in a certain year for people with dementia. I loved being in those rooms and recognized much but the book got a bit out of control in my opinion.

Ruthiella Ah well. I think I will only read Boulder based on your and other reviews. 2y
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella Maybe Still Born too, if you can get your hands on it 😉 2y
batsy My reaction to the winner was also pretty much "Ah, well" @Ruthiella The theme is important but the book itself doesn't grab me... 2y

The_Penniless_Author @batsy @Ruthiella This was a low pick for me. It did get pretty shaggy and tedious towards the end, but I liked the underlying idea and appreciated the ambition behind it. I also used to live in Bulgaria, so probably appreciated the sections/commentary on Bulgaria more than most people did. 2y
BarbaraBB @The_Penniless_Author That‘s how I felt too. The underlying idea is great. Interesting you lived in Bulgaria. I recently read another book set there. 2y
The_Penniless_Author I never heard of that book or Garth Greenwell before. I'm kind of interested to learn more now. It looks like he lived in BG about 5+ years after I left, and he taught English at a private college for diplomats' kids and one-percenters, so I'd be curious to see how different our experiences were. 2y
jlhammar I‘m planning to read Boulder and Still Born (out here in the US Aug 8) thanks to your reviews. Both sound fantastic. Might give Time Shelter a try eventually. The premise does sound intriguing. 2y
sarahbarnes I agree. I can see why it won, but I would‘ve rather seen Boulder or Still Born take the prize. 2y
Cinfhen I‘ve seen so many positive reviews for Boulder so I think I‘ll give that one a go and skip Time Shelter. It‘s still super expensive and not a book im eager to read 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
BarbaraBB @The_Penniless_Author I found it an interesting read and it felt authentic. I think you maybe can relate to it in some ways! 2y
BarbaraBB @jlhammar They really are. I hope you‘ll think so too! 2y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Boulder is your kind of book too I think! 2y
Megabooks That‘s a fantastic cover though! 1y

Pickpick

Al-Awafi is a small village in #Oman. Time seems to have passed without any changes. People live their lives as they have for centuries in this desolate part of the country. But this is the 20th century and things ARE changing. This book tells how the community deals with current times. The story is a combination of folklore and magic realism, of fiction and journalism.

Oh man, I read none 😳. How about you @Simona ? My to do list grows!

Also - happy to see another Dutch writer! #internationalbookerprize

sisilia I haven‘t been following new releases recently 🙈 Those titles look aliens to me hahahaha... Enjoy your Man Booker project 👍🏻 4y
BarbaraBB @sisilia I won‘t read the longlist, it‘s simply too much 🤷🏻‍♀️. I‘ll just happily follow reviews of the people who do and make notes which ones to put on my tbr 😀 (edited) 4y
Dolly Absolutely none! Judging for the BookTube Prize has me focusing almost entirely (personal reads are exceptions) on 2020 publishing dates. 4y

batsy I have read exactly zero and I'm glad I'm not alone 😁 4y
BookwormM None here as well but I can get a whole 3 of them from the library and then we shall have to see what the shortlist brings 🤣🤣 4y
Simona I finished yesterday, as it looks the tiniest book of the list, Minor Detail. 4y
BarbaraBB @Simona It‘s a start 😉👍🏽 4y

#WeeklyForecast 14/20

I am still reading Woman no. 17. Halfway through and not sure what to think of it. Based on @Kalalalatja ‘s review I now finally want to read Stella Fortuna. But there‘s also our #NYRBBookclub read (which may be a bit too heavy for me these days) and the only Dutch book nominated for the #InternationalBookerPrize.

TrishB Nice pic 👍🏻 I decided one book ahead was all I could manage! 5y
Cinfhen Quite a lovely photo 💚😍it‘s hard to settle on a book but I‘ve been having some good luck! 5y
Kalalalatja Exciting! Hope you‘ll like Stella 🤞 5y

BarbaraBB @TrishB I‘ll be glad if I manage to finish one of these too 🤷🏻‍♀️😘 5y
merelybookish You're not along! I should start Iza's Ballad too but it looks like it requires more attention than I have. 5y
