#infintejestbuddyread #week8
Marathe and Steeply have now had several discussions about choice and freedom and each one views the notion of choice very differently. What does each one think about he ways in which choice and freedom are connected? Who do you agree with? Who does DFW agree with?

Currey I am going to butcher the beauty of DFW's argument but Marathe believes that American's are childish and have not been taught to choose what to love and that they will therefore "freely", like the lab rats, watch an entertainment cartridge even onto starvation. Steeply believes temptation is part of a free society and that all humans are selfish but that it is society's responsibility to protect against temptation. #infinitejestbuddyread 8y
AshleyHoss820 I think Steeply is saying that freedom of choice is not freedom from consequences, but the freedom to choose is still a right and no one else's business. Also, that we shouldn't really be surprised when people "pull the lever", even to the detriment of their physical well-being. 8y
britt_brooke @Currey 👍🏻👍🏻 8y

Currey I think you encapsulated Steeply better than I did, but don't you think his investigation of the "entertainment" is about protecting whatever it is he is supposed to protect (ONAN presumably). Or do you think he is just having a philosophical discussion with Marathe? Not easy stuff for me to parse. 8y
Mtroiano @Currey I think the conversation is mostly philosophical. Is freedom the absence of boundaries even if that means you can harm yourself or is freedom the ability to do what you want because boundaries have been established to keep you from harming yourself? 8y
Pippitypip On page 318 Marathe criticises the USA because its citizens no longer know how to choose. Other countries peoples can still choose some ideal beyond themselves. By implication, others have more freedom. Americans have not been taught to choose with care because they have been mollycoddled, and choose The Entertainment (whatever that is) which is a deathly pursuit of happiness to the detriment of all else. (edited) 8y
Pippitypip On the other hand, Steeply accuses the Québécois of being totalitarian "Cuba with snow". He says that being unable to choose is a hazard of being free, and that one cannot be human without freedom. I think DFW sides with Steeply. He goes on to have Steeply say that paternalism, however well meant, prevents people from being able to make their own choices, even if these choices are detrimental to them. 8y

#infinitejestbuddyread #week3 discussion time! Please no spoilers if you have read past page 181.

This essay talks about the high failure (dNF) rate of this book: http://infinitesummer.org/archives/597
We've had quite a few drop out already. If you dropped out, why? If you're still with us what has made this attempt successful for you?

Mtroiano Finished (just now) and my favorite parts were the video chat section and Jim Incandenza's section. I'm really glad we're doing this as a buddy read or I think I would have a hard time getting through it and/or I would miss a lot of the details. 8y
drokka I dropped out last week for a few reasons, but ultimately, my problem with the book is that the author doesn't trust the reader to pick up on things, so he ads this ridiculous footnote business (some of which should really appendices). Those footnotes are actually part of the story - so put them there. But needing to read a footnote to a footnote. Nope, not interested. I like to immerse myself in a novel for its sake, not the author's. 8y
JenP @drokka while I certainly appreciate the fact that the footnotes are tedious, I disagree with the notion that they exist because the author doesn't trust readers to notice info in the text. The footnotes are much like the rest of the book in that you need to dig deep to see connections. I see the footnotes as a way of enhancing the experience yet I struggle though some of them. I completely understand your decision to bail if they are unpleasant 8y

sisilia I'm two weeks behind but I'm still on it. I like to start slow as I digest everything . It's a lot of work, but I'm curious - what did DFW try to tell us here? So @JenP , I'll be with the rest til the end 🤞🏻 (edited) 8y
JenP @sisilia what do you mean? Tell us about the footnote, the point of the book, or the reading experience? 8y
JenP @Mtroiano I agree. I'm so grateful to all of you for joining in because I am getting so much more out if it thanks to the mutual analysis and discussion 8y
britt_brooke @JenP What percentage of readers are still plugging along (including those who joined a little later)? Just curious. 8y
britt_brooke @Mtroiano I'm getting so much more out of this reading as a group, too. Thanks @JenP for being our leader. 😁 8y
JenP @britt_brooke I can't quite tell since not everyone is filling out the google doc as they finish each section. Let me take a quite look and see if I can give you an approximate number. I know at least 6 who have bailed. I think there are some who signed up who either haven't started or decided not to read it since I haven't seen any updates from at least 10 who signed up on the google doc 8y
britt_brooke @JenP Ok, gotcha. 😉 And thanks for the reminder about updating the google doc! I still have 10 pages to complete this morning, then I'll join the discussion in a bit. 8y
Mtroiano I forgot about the google doc 😬 8y
JenP @Mtroiano I'm going to post a reminder tomorrow. But you and Britt are both very active so I know you're still reading. It's the silent people who I am not sure about 8y
JenP Okay, update: I have 35 who signed up on the google form. Of those readers 6 have bailed. I am not sure about the following people but they haven't posted in the last week. Let us know your status: @CareBear @AshleyHoss820 @McShelfington @Godmotherx5 (I think you bailed but can't remember) @SarahK @Spiderfelt (edited) 8y
CareBear I'm behind. I think I'm at like page 90 or so and have seriously considered bailing. BUT I have Friday off and reserved some time for Infinite Jest. I'm going to give it some more pages!! 8y
JenP And then I have the following who have posted in the buddy read hashtag but aren't officially in the google form. If you are all participating, can you sign up so you are included in our tally (and get entered for the prizes. @smccallum @shuva @Readage @reneelyons @tstan. 8y
JenP @CareBear thanks for the update. I will say that I think I have passed the hurdle and it's now much easier to read. If you can make it to 200 you may find it more enjoyable. You can do it!! 8y
JenP If I am missing anyone, let me know 8y
AshleyHoss820 I'm still here! I'll just have to be behind a bit/play catch up. I have to have my Nebraska 150 challenge form sent in before March 1st. I'm on my last book! I'm not bailing! It's on my 1,001 list, so I need to finish it. I just found myself in a time crunch. 😩 8y
JenP @AshleyHoss820 awesome. I thought you were, but reaching out just in case. I'm reading the 1001 list too! 8y
Kristelh Still here! I kind of forgot about google form. Do I send it or just fill it in? @JenP 8y
britt_brooke Thanks for the update! 8y
Skeebies05 Yup. I'm still with you. Sometimes I do not know why I am still reading but then comes a few chapters where I am amused and entertained. 8y
JenP @Kristelh just edit it. You should be able to go to the email receipt and click edit responses. I know you are reading still but since I will be drawing the prizes from the google doc want to make sure you are included! 8y
JenP @Skeebies05 😂 I think I've finally gotten to the place where I'm enjoying more pieces than not but it took some energy to get here 8y
AshleyHoss820 @JenP I'm glad you asked!! I'm excited to really get back into this. I was loving it, so far! It will be much easier for me as a Buddy Read. Some of the larger books can make you think you're crazy. 😄Good luck on the 1,001!! 8y
Currey I agree that it is getting ever so slightly easier to read as I recognize various characters. I am hoping once I make it to page 200 more story themes will tie together and be more enjoyable reading. I also would not be doing this if it was not this buddy read. I need you all for both insights and moral support 8y
CareBear @JenP that's good to know! I'll commit to 200 pages, that sounds reasonable. That essay you posted was helpful too. I have enjoyed parts but when I have time to read I just find myself drawn to other things. 8y
Simona Sorry, but I totally forgot about google doc 😳 8y
Bloomingjen Yep, I am still reading. I have about 8 more pages to go in this section. I should finish it tonight. One thing I have noticed that kind of bugs me- I usually read 3 or 4 books at once but with this book, I can only read this and then another on my Nook and I only get through a few pages a day on that. I am invested in some of the characters in IJ, esp Hal, so I want to keep reading. I'm hoping IJ gets easier to read. No idea why I expect thatlol 8y
mjdowens Still slogging my way through..... 8y
Kristelh #infintejestbuddyread #week3. @JenP, I am still reading, this week was hard as I was too tired to pay attention. I am hoping that I am less tired. This is a book that is more like studying than reading. I am so glad to be reading this with everyone. Thanks to all for sticking to it. Let's do this!🕷🕷🕷🕸🕸🕸🐁🐁🌵🌵🎾🎾📽🎞💉💊🚽 just a few of themes, symbols, etc that I've noticed. 8y
LeahBergen I'm still here and the more I read - the more I like! 8y
Simona Yes, I did completed this week reading goal and I'm surprised, that I really enjoy in the reading and I'm also surprised at the low number of footnotes 😁. My favorite part is from p. 143 about stolen heart... 8y
LeahBergen I have to say that my favourite parts this week have been with the boys at ETA; learning some of Pemulis' history, the urine "dealing", Mario's relationship with Pemulis, etc. 8y
Kristelh I liked the part where we read about the tennis match, the black widows falling out of the palms. Letting us know this isn't going to be good, something nasty is going to happen. 8y
JenP @Simona . Not a major issue but it is the place where I will randomly pick prize winners so I don't want anyone to miss out 8y
JenP @Bloomingjen I am the same way in that I have had to cut down on other reads to be able to finish this one on shedule 8y
JenP @mjdowens 😂 well glad you're still with us! 8y
reneelyons Hey @JenP! I'm still reading but had no idea there was a google form - where can I find it? 8y
JenP @reneelyons I will reply with the link when I get home today. 8y
BookHermit @JenP I'm still with you but lagging behind this week. I'm on an ice fishing trip and didn't have room for "the brick" in my bag. Tried reading it on my kobo but it's maddeningly slow flipping between endnotes, etc. I will catch up on the weekend ? 8y
JenP @BookHermit I can't imagine why you didn't want to carry it around 😂 I hope e you're having a good trip. Just checking in with everyone today. 8y
britt_brooke Ok, now I'm finished with this week's reading. I'm still enjoying it very much. It's like discovering - and fitting together - tiny pieces of a massive puzzle. My favorite sections this week were "videophony" and the transcript of "Tennis and the Feral Prodigy." 8y
Pippitypip I made notes this week, which helped a lot to remember what was in this week's section. There is such a lot going on! 8y
Abailliekaras I'm absolutely loving it - especially reading it as a group, thank you @JenP ! Although have hit a challenging dry bit further on (no spoilers). Sorry I forgot the Google doc, will do! 8y
Abailliekaras Ps @JenP could you kindly re-post the Google doc link? Many thanks 😊 8y
JenP @Abailliekaras I did in this comment section about 4 up 8y
Abailliekaras Ah sorry! All done. I might take a break (now that I've hit this challenging bit 😉) & try to pull my notes & flags into order. So richly detailed! 8y
JenP @Abailliekaras no worries, the link keeps getting buried. I will repost every 2 weeks or so 8y
monkeygirlsmama I'm still in and reading, but I haven't caught up yet. 😬 It was so much easier when I was on vacation and my kids were too. Now that school is back in session I'm busy preparing lessons and teaching, and if I'm not at the school teaching I'm at home with my girls helping them (homeschool). By the time I get a chance to sit down and really dive in it's evening, and this book tends to be much easier for me to read earlier in the day. 😛 8y
monkeygirlsmama If I could just sit and read it would be easier, but all the note taking limits me to when and where I feel I can really focus. Anyhow, I'm trying to catch up. Will try to update my bit for the google form as soon as I catch up. 8y
JenP @monkeygirlsmama it is much more of a commitment than a regular book. Finding time is hard. Good luck! 8y
Hooked_on_books That essay is fun! I definitely feel the trial size Dove bar is ice cream, not soap. I don't like this book enough so far to say I like it and not disliking it enough to say I dislike it, but it's been sitting on my shelf staring at me for nearly 20 years, so it's pure stubbornness which is keeping me going. It's like my personal Everest! And Pemilus is rather despicable with his dealing, but I really like him! 8y
smccallum @JenP I was unaware of the form sorting that now but I have fallen behind due to some acting research but I'm hoping to catch up today! 8y
monkeygirlsmama I finally caught up! I really got a kick out of several sections this week, including the Fitness Guru bit and the rehab transcripts. 😂 I got bored slogging through James I's father's diatribe. Blah blah blah... tennis.... blah blah blah ... I didn't make it be better ... blah blah blah tennis... yawn 🤐😴 8y
monkeygirlsmama @Currey Me too. I would love it if it came to a point where I could stop keeping notes on the characters from one chapter to the next. It's been extremely beneficial, but reading would take one a whole new level of enjoyment if it didn't feel so much like work- which the note taking seems like. 📝 8y

This afternoon I met a Haitian student I'm mentoring for coffee at a bookstore. We were getting to know each other, making small talk. He asked me what kind of books I like to read. Big books, I answered, hefting my recent purchase out of my bottomless purse. The stranger sitting at the next table piped up 'Me too!', showing us his copy. He's on page27. I told him about Litsy and #infintejestbuddyread. Coincidences make me feel like a million 💵.

saresmoore That is so fun—small world! 8y

All caught up but I did not read endnote 304 even though directed to it twice in previous endnotes in the section. Anyone else saving it for later? 😂 #infintejestbuddyread
