amywithbooks @Lizpixie A Head Full of Ghosts is one of my favorites... might need to read it again! 7y
Lizpixie @avgeyer have you read The Exorcist? If you like Head Full Of Ghosts, then you'll love that. 7y

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow | Washington Irving

Pickpick

Very readable & short classic for fall. Ichabod Crane is over his heels trying to woo the local farm girl & beat out her normal suitor Brom Bones. In Sleepy Hollow, however, there's also the mysterious ghost of a Headless Horseman. Irving's prose is stellar—some of the best descriptions I've read in a while & often hilarious. He's got quite a sarcastic streak. Loved reading the original rendition of this oft-told tale & glad I finally did! 🎃🐎🍂

BookishFeminist PS: it's on @SerialReader in only 5 issues! That's how I read it! #classics #scaretober #allhallowsread #ghostsoflitsy 8y
Anton I listened to an audio of this a couple years ago read by the guy who plays Icabod Crane on the show Sleepy Hollow! 8y
Cortg @BookishFeminist Oooh, thanks for the PS. If I ever finish my 233 issues of Les Miserable on serial reader, I'll have to try this one! Thanks! 8y

BookishFeminist @Anton Ooh how'd you like the audiobook? I've been meaning to watch that show, too! 8y
BookishFeminist @Cortg Holy cow 🐄! You're brave for trying Les Mis on Serial Reader. I've always got a couple books going on Serial Reader anyway since I can usually manage 20 min of reading them a day. 8y
Anton I really enjoyed it! Not usually an audio guy, but he did a good job reading it. 8y
Peterdamien I'm about to reread this! I rewatched the movie the other night and found it as gleeful and cool as ever, so that means I gotta revisit the story 8y
Megabooks Awesome! I should pick up classics more often. I've missed you. 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @Peterdamien I need to rewatch the movie soon! It's lots of fun to read/watch things in tandem. Especially if it's a short book like this one! 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks Yes! Have you tried Serial Reader? I love it. I've missed you too, book buddy! 😀 How have you been settling into SC? 8y
erzascarletbookgasm I keep telling myself to read this. I've enjoyed the film adaptation...one day 😅 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist Yes, but my phone is pretty small, and they don't have it for Kindle tablets. It's a little hard to enjoy ☹️️ I'm really happy in SC and at my job especially! I love doing research all day. I'm indulging my nerdy side. 🤓🤓 It's wonderful to be using my degree and mind in a different way. I haven't made any friends yet, but fingers crossed. I'm in the marketing aisle, so most of the people near me are more extroverted. 8y
RebL My hometown middle schools were named after poets. The Irving kids were dark, mysterious and cool. 8y
SaturnDoo I reread this a couple of weeks ago...haven't read it since high school but enjoyed it. I think the audio for it is on Librivox☺ 8y
BookishFeminist @erzascarletbookgasm At least it's a short book! You should be able to fit it in sometime in your probably massive TBR. 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks That's so good to hear! I'm glad you're enjoying it and it's giving you a nice change of pace. The friends will come. 😀 Having extroverts around helps a lot with that- as much as I side eye them when I just want my alone time, lol. At least the online ones can tide you over until then now that you sound more settled- that's helped me a lot in the past! 8y
BookishFeminist @RebL 😂 That's amazing and fitting knowing what I do of Irving. What other poets were represented?! I'm curious now! 8y
BookishFeminist @SaturnDoo Librivox?? Do tell- what is this?! I agree, it's a nice fun classic to read. 8y
SaturnDoo @BookishFeminist it is a website where volunteers read books that are in the public domain. Not all narators are good but a lot of them are. Fun,free way to listen to a lot of the classics if you want ☺ 8y
BookishFeminist @SaturnDoo Oh, nice! I'll have to check that out! That does sound like a great way to listen to classics. Between Serial Reader and audiobooks I would never read any of the ones on my TBR. 😂 8y
SaturnDoo @BookishFeminist Yes do check them out. I enjoy Librivox and Serial Reader. A lot of the classics, especially some of the shorter, lesser known works that I couldn't find, I was able to listen to through Livrivox. I recommend everybody to go and take a peek 😊 8y

At first I felt like I was reading a new author, and I was a bit off kilter and it was CREEPY. By the end, it was pure David Mitchell shining through. All the metaphysics you've come to expect and ten times the horror! Creepiest (did I say creepy?) twins ever, and likeable victims made this sad, frightening, and atmospheric. It would make a great film if I weren't afraid someone would totally ruin it. #scaretober #ghostsoflitsy

It's a day late, but y'all can use this space to discuss Turn of the Screw! I thought the framing device was so interesting- I love ghost stories that start with people telling stories. I may post some more questions later - and if you discuss spoilers in the comments, make sure to use the tag! #scaretober #ghostsoflitsy

MMenefee I've read suggestions that the governess is an unreliable narrator. This would assume the individual telling her story is reliable. 8y
PurpleyPumpkin I enjoyed my reread of this novel. This time, I "read" the audiobook and I think it enhanced the building tension of the story. And the ending, wow! Totally unexpected!! 8y

Also started this in the car; while my last audio experience was mixed, it was enough to keep me going. Like that this is narrated by a cast - very engaging! #scaretober #ghostsoflitsy

Life has been crazy, and I've missed checking in on what you have all been reading and talking about. I have stolen a few minutes to start this, and while I'm just into the second chapter, it is CREEPY. More so than I expected, but a pleasant surprise. Still don't feel 100% like I'm reading David Mitchell, but it's early pages yet! #scaretober #ghostsoflitsy

BeckyK Finished this the other day and really liked it. Hope you enjoy it :) 8y
BibliOphelia @Beckykearns Thanks! Hard to imagine not, but hate to tempt a jinx, especially in October 😉 8y

YOU GUYS. This was incredible. Loved all of the references to his Dad's books. Loved the characters, especially Vic. Charlie Manx reminds me so much of Kurt Barlow from 'Salem's Lot and the two stories had a remarkably similar feel. Perfect book for this time of year! #scaretober #ghostsoflitsy

cariashley I read it last October. So good!!! 8y

Welcome to our discussion of Angela Carter's first short story and the last of our #ghostsoflitsy short stories, round one! What did everyone think of "The Man Who Loved A Double Bass?" How does it handle the themes of obsession? This is personally one of my favorites - it's so weird and just so creepy/haunting at the same time!

MMenefee I loved this story! 8y
MMenefee The more Carter I read, the more I understand Jameson's obsession with Lola. 8y
