The Summer Book | Tove Jansson

I want to thank #foodandlit2024 for encouraging me to choose a book from Finland. One of my best friends growing up had a Finnish dad and a Swedish mum and I was exposed to all of the best things from each culture and continue to love Scandi style above all others. This novel is a love letter to summer and Finland told in short vignettes that flip back and forth through the main character‘s , Sophia, childhood summers with her grandma and father.

mcctrish I spent most of my summers on the shores of Lake Winnipeg with my maternal grandparents and my mom ( my dad was there part of the summer) and while not nearly as isolated as island living, the floating timelessness of my days are so much like the ones in this story. There is no way kids now could ever experience this natural summer childhood and that‘s such a loss (edited) 3w

Susanita Your summers sound wonderful. 3w
mcctrish @Susanita absolutely they were, so many memories were stirred up with this book; my chores, the routines/traditions and all the time when I was just off on my own or with friends walking, bike riding and at the beach 😱with no supervision 3w

This was a collection of 4 volumes depicting a historical fiction account of the Metis people in Canada. The story jumps back and forth between the present and the past. Our MC, Echo, gets transported to the past to witness historical events that happened to her people. The artwork was beautiful, and the historical information was interesting. However, there was very little dialogue and very little character development. 3.5 ⭐️

This was an interesting read. A young girl became engaged to a dead man who may have been murdered. I thought this practice was fictional until the notes at the end. The paranormal aspects of the book were interesting and confusing at the same time. I kept getting my characters mixed up. However, I highly enjoyed the ending. 3.5⭐️

TheAromaofBooks This was one of those books that whenever I was reading it, I wanted to keep reading it, but I had trouble getting myself to pick it up again after I would set it down. 4mo

Oh my goodness! I had a roller-coaster of emotions with this book. At first, I thought I didn't like it because there was so much negativity, and I wanted to shake some sense into the MC. But then I found myself yelling, laughing, and especially crying as the book came together at the end. Oh, the end! I ugly cried in the car as I drove home from work. 5⭐️

I'm a bit late, but I just began the tagged book. The author writes about her time as an ambassador's wife in Madrid during Barack Obama's presidency.

I was so excited for this month's #foodandlit2024 because I love Korean food. We went to our favorite Korean BBQ and stuffed ourselves.

I also started the tagged book today.

Another soft pick for me:
The main character goes back to her hometown in New Zealand after her husband's death only to get involved in a missing person's case. I highly enjoyed the setting but I do admit that some parts were a little slow for me. However, trying to figure out who the bad guy was kept me hooked.
