I was excited to see Michael Crichton had a pirate book because I love listening to his audiobooks when I walk. Unfortunately this one didn‘t gel with me. Oh well. #BookedInTime @Cuilin

A quick easy YA read for #bookedintime. Pirates follows the daughter of a Bristol merchant as she learns the reality of where her wealth is come from & how tenuous her circumstances as a young woman are. enjoyed learning about something new.Pirates! Pirate honour! Whilst well researched it has a simplistic tone to it The love story seemed insta & there was a sense that Nancy was telling minerva‘s story as much as her own. @Cuilin
This eye-opening, devastating book is incredibly well written. It would be unbearable otherwise. It leaves you with a hole you must fill with a love story or something silly. The dark underbelly of paradise is never a comfortable place to be. I disliked the main characters and understood the complexity in their ideals, paths, and choices. The ending is predictable only in that heartbreaking way it has to turn out.
I enjoyed it so much! It was a perfect way to start the year and provided a real eye-opener into the lives of people in Jamaica.
The book does an amazing job describing Jamaican life, food, scenery, and settings. And the food! It had me salivating, I could almost taste it all!
Once again I must thank @Rissreadswithcats for literally putting a book in my hand and commanding me to read it 🤣🙏. I loved it so much. Is there a movie or series adaptation of it I should watch?
What did I just read? This wasn‘t for me - I‘m trying to read more Classics this year and this was to be a prequel to Jane Eyre. Here‘s to hoping my reading experience is vastly different for Jane Eyre than it was for Wide Sargasso Sea.
I guess this was my year of retellings/reimaginings! And my feelings of solidarity with the woman in the attic won out in the end ✊🔥

I wonder what trends I‘ll see in 2025!
Calling all Marlon James fans! His first step into writing/ producing television is a detective show where the title character is after a missing child. It's a 5-episode limited series that James uses to take all the detective/police show tropes he likes while throwing away anything predictable or stale, leaving only the good parts. It's intense, with a killer performance by Tamara Lawrence. On Max or Channel 4 in the UK. I highly recommend!
