Pirate Latitudes | Michael Crichton

Mehso-so

I was excited to see Michael Crichton had a pirate book because I love listening to his audiobooks when I walk. Unfortunately this one didn‘t gel with me. Oh well. #BookedInTime @Cuilin

RamsFan1963 This was published after Crichton passed away, and eventhough it has his name on it, it didn't feel like one of his books to me, it was too short and underdeveloped. It feels like someone to his notes or maybe an outline and "ghost" wrote the rest. 3d
Bookwormjillk @RamsFan1963 ohhhh that makes a lot of sense 3d
Cuilin Oh that‘s disappointing. 3d

A quick easy YA read for #bookedintime. Pirates follows the daughter of a Bristol merchant as she learns the reality of where her wealth is come from & how tenuous her circumstances as a young woman are. enjoyed learning about something new.Pirates! Pirate honour! Whilst well researched it has a simplistic tone to it The love story seemed insta & there was a sense that Nancy was telling minerva‘s story as much as her own. @Cuilin

Cuilin Sounds fabulous. 🏴‍☠️ ✔️🎉 6d

This eye-opening, devastating book is incredibly well written. It would be unbearable otherwise. It leaves you with a hole you must fill with a love story or something silly. The dark underbelly of paradise is never a comfortable place to be. I disliked the main characters and understood the complexity in their ideals, paths, and choices. The ending is predictable only in that heartbreaking way it has to turn out.

I enjoyed it so much! It was a perfect way to start the year and provided a real eye-opener into the lives of people in Jamaica.

The book does an amazing job describing Jamaican life, food, scenery, and settings. And the food! It had me salivating, I could almost taste it all!

Once again I must thank @Rissreadswithcats for literally putting a book in my hand and commanding me to read it 🤣🙏. I loved it so much. Is there a movie or series adaptation of it I should watch?

Rissreadswithcats Yay! It‘s always a worry when you recommend a book. What‘s up next? 2mo
jenniferw88 There's a BBC TV series if you can get it (starring a pre-Sherlock Benedict Cumberbatch 🤣) 2mo
MrsMalaprop @jenniferw88 thank you! Will see if I can find it. 2mo

What did I just read? This wasn‘t for me - I‘m trying to read more Classics this year and this was to be a prequel to Jane Eyre. Here‘s to hoping my reading experience is vastly different for Jane Eyre than it was for Wide Sargasso Sea.

BkClubCare If you like audiobooks, the Thandie Newton narration of Jane Eyre is really good. 2mo
lil1inblue It's not your typical prequel. I would classify it as a retelling, myself. I think it is better appreciated after you read Jane Eyre. 2mo
LiteraryHoarderPenny @BkClubCare I have it saved in my audible library!! 2mo
LiteraryHoarderPenny @lil1inblue I saw this said before too! I doubt I‘ll try to read it again though and maybe should have started with Jane Eyre but here we are! 🥰😊 2mo

I guess this was my year of retellings/reimaginings! And my feelings of solidarity with the woman in the attic won out in the end ✊🔥

Calling all Marlon James fans! His first step into writing/ producing television is a detective show where the title character is after a missing child. It's a 5-episode limited series that James uses to take all the detective/police show tropes he likes while throwing away anything predictable or stale, leaving only the good parts. It's intense, with a killer performance by Tamara Lawrence. On Max or Channel 4 in the UK. I highly recommend!

Ruthiella Sounds great. Did you ever listen to his podcast with his editor (or agent) Jake? It was delightful. I‘m sorry they are both too busy to continue. 2mo
Billypar @Ruthiella I did! The two of them were a good pair - very entertaining. I didn't listen to all the episodes, but it's caused me to bump up Mrs. Caliban and Wide Sargasso Sea on my tbr. 2mo
