Probably my favorite movie of all time, and the book was great too.

While it actually takes place in the 70s, it is in Detroit so I‘m going with it. 😁

I asked my mom, Geralynn, for something from 1967, because she lived in Detroit, Michigan #MittenLitten, at the time. She found a picture of the playmobile. She‘s the little blonde hidden on the left side.

mabell Cool!! That‘s so creative! 6y

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us...”

LiterRohde Michigan Central Railroad Station exemplifies Detroit. Opened in 1913, it was constructed by the Vanderbilts for $2.5 million ($63 million 2018). By 1967, however, it was already in decline - ironically because of the new freeway system filled with all the cars coming out of Detroit. The last train left in 1988. By 2009, it was up for demolition. But in 2018, Ford bought the building with plans to house its autonomous and electric car divisions. 6y
wanderinglynn I wish train travel would come back. I know there‘s a few routes (I‘ve ridden the Amtrak in the northeast several times). But I wish you could get anywhere on the train. I enjoy trains as a way to travel over driving or air. It‘s so much more civilized. 🚆 6y
suvata I‘m originally from Detroit and I love that old building — even beautiful in its decay. 6y

Freespirit Wow what is it used for now? 6y
LiterRohde @Freespirit It has changed hands many times over the years, but nothing has really come of it. The Corktown Campus built by Ford will be the first time it will be used again, from what I understand. 6y
LiterRohde @wanderinglynn Your comment reminds me of Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory and his love of trains. I‘ve never actually used a train to travel. I have ridden the train around the Milwaukee County Zoo though, so that counts, right? 🤣 (edited) 6y
wanderinglynn Totally counts! 😂 But I highly recommend traveling by train. It‘s a lovely way to travel. I went from Harrisburg, PA to DC, DC to New Haven, Connecticut, and DC to NYC. Large, roomy seats, you can get up and walk around, and no worries about traffic! 6y
wanderinglynn And I love Sheldon! #bazinga 6y
Velvetfur What a gorgeous building, and so sad about its decline, but I'm glad its going to be used again. I've seen so many photos of abandoned buildings in Detroit, it looks like it was such a gorgeous city once, and I imagine it still is, I'd like to go there one day 😊 6y
Cinfhen What a beautiful building. Heartbreaking to see so much potential neglected and abounded 💔💔💔once so powerful a city 😔 6y

Middlesex: A Novel | Jeffrey Eugenides

One of the best first lines ever! Eugenides captures the complexities of so many social issues, including the personal effects of the #Detroit67 riot. It's worth examining whether naming it Rebellion or Uprising is more useful in understanding its causes. It was, indeed, a long hot summer before my Junior year of High School. 💔 #MittenLitten #TimbitTunes @TheKidUpstairs @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Here are two more Detroit recommendations @RachelO I‘ve been meaning to read Middlesex forever!!! 6y
AmyG This is one of my most favorote books. @Cinfhen If you have it...read it. It‘s THAT good. 6y

rockpools @Cinfhen @lynneamch Well thank you - I‘d wondered about this one - looks like I‘ll need to actually read it, seeing the glowing recommendations. Maybe I need a Detroit season. Followed by a field trip 😁 The other book sounds great too. 📚📚📚 6y
Suet624 I keep thinking I‘ve read this book but I also know that I haven‘t. Maybe I should actually get it done! 6y

One of my favourite books is largely set in Detroit (but not just in '67). #Detroit67 #TimbitTunes @Cinfhen

Sorry that I've been a bit absent over the last couple days. I've been really sick, and looking at my phone has made me woozy! I've been trying to at least check out as many #TimbitTunes posts as I can!

monalyisha Hope you feel better soon! 💕 6y

This book has been on my #tbr list forever! Early 20th century, a mass migration occurred...African American families left the South and headed north or west. Cities like Detroit found their demographics change rapidly, and in some ways overnight. But, why? Wilkerson explores this, based on her family‘s experience. I‘ve seen nothing but positive reviews on this book, and I really, really should read this soon! #Detroit67 #TimbitTunes

megnews Been on my tbr a long time too. And I really want to read it. I find the length daunting. 6y
ErikasMindfulShelf Great on audio 6y
Librarybelle @megnews Yes! It‘s a hefty book, page wise. 6y

Librarybelle @irre Good to know...thanks! 6y

Cinfhen Definite #PageCountPhobia but it‘s meant to be really well done & informative 6y
Tamra Definitely on my TBR, I just need to buy it. 6y
Hooked_on_books It‘s been sitting on my shelf a while, too! 6y
Librarybelle @megnews @TheBookHippie @Tamra @Hooked_on_books Maybe we should read this together? Maybe aim for April? I‘d be very happy to read this with other Littens! Have you read this @Cinfhen ? 6y
Cinfhen Have not read this @Librarybelle I think the page count is putting me off 🙈 6y
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle fine by me 📖❤️ 6y
Tamra @Librarybelle I absolutely would, but I‘ll be in the middle of a grad course and my recreational reading time will be limited and definitely has to be lighter fiction. 😫 6y
megnews I‘d love to join in when it‘s planned. A buddy read might be the motivation I need. 6y
Librarybelle Yikes, @Tamra ...you‘ll be busy! Good luck! @TheBookHippie @megnews Let me take a look at some dates and see if we can get something organized. 6y
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle sounds good to me! 6y
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle I‘d be up for a buddy read. I‘m moving in April, so I‘ll be a bit busy at times. I‘ll be sure not to pack my copy away. Keep me posted! 6y
Amiable I loved this book — a rare 5-star rating from me the year I read it. 6y

#TimbitTunes Day 25: Born and raised in #Detroit67 (not sure about the year tho), Yee crafted a book filled with tiny clues and funny captions if the reader is keen in looking at details. Older kids might appreciate the visual ‘wit‘ more than the younger ones though. While the art & the rhyming aspect are 😐, the strength of the book lies in the detective‘s following through every missing clue ala CSI. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-1mf
